Notes: This paper reports both experimental and numerical investigations on delamination mechanisms in [05, 905, 05] carbon fiber(CF)/poly(etheretherketone) (PEEK) laminate subjected to low-velocity impact. It was found that the CF/PEEK composite exhibits the same damage mechanisms as epoxy-based composites, but superior delamination resistance. For the crossply laminate, the impact delamination results from a Mode II interlaminar fracture process, and a close association exists between the interlaminar shear stress field and the delamination growth. The prediction of impact-induced delamination sizes is discussed.

Description: Two copper coordination polymers (CPs) [Cu(1,2-BIYB) 2 (AQ-2,6-DA)] n · nH 2 O ( 1 ) and [Cu(1,4-BIYB) 2 (AQ-2,7-DA)] n · 3 n H 2 O ( 2 ) were obtained by reactions of pentahydrate copper sulfate with corresponding sulfonate and imidazole ligand under hydrothermal conditions, respectively [Na 2 AQ-2,7-DA = anthraquinone-2,7-disulfonic acid disodium salt, Na 2 AQ-2,6-DA = anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonic acid disodium salt, 1,4-BIYB = 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene, 1,2-BIYB = 1,2-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene]. CPs 1 and 2 show different structures: CP 1 has a 2D architecture, which is further extended into a 3D supramolecular structure through hydrogen bonding interactions, whereas CP 2 has a 1D architecture, which generates a 3D supramolecular structure via hydrogen bonding and strong π ··· π interaction. Notably, CPs 1 and 2 feature rare examples of CPs based visible-light-driven photocatalysts and reveal good stability toward photocatalysis.

Description: A novel catalyst for bisphenol-A synthesis was prepared by bis (2-mercapto-ethyl) amine adsorbed on macroporous sulfonic resin through neutralization reaction. The physicochemical properties of two resin catalysts before and after bis (2-mercapto-ethyl) amine absorption were compared by scanning electron microscope and nitrogen adsorption. The kinetic of the new catalyst preparation process was studied and found this is a chemical adsorption and endothermic process. The adsorption rate is mainly controlled by the intra-particle diffusion, affected by boundary layer diffusion and chemical reaction as well. The thermodynamic activation parameters were calculated. Compared with unmodified catalyst, the modified resin catalyst showed higher selectivity and acetone conversion in the continuous bisphenol-A synthesis process. © 2013 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 2013

Description: [1]  Stress relaxation experiments are reported that culminate in energetic failure in rocks analogous to the loading cycle and subsequent localization or reactivation on brittle faults embedded in an elastic medium. Universally, rapid primary deformation arrests and transitions into a long secondary deformation phase that ultimately accelerates to catastrophic rupture. Primary deformation ( u ) conforms to Andrade's law as d u /d t ~  ( t c - t 0 ) θ with a standard exponent of 2/3 . In the long, and readily observable, secondary phase the samples both deform and analogously shed load near-linearly in time. This stress relaxation rate exhibits a robust power-law dependency with time-to-rupture and exhibits the same 2/3 power-law exponent observed in the primary phase. Similarly, the brittle strain energy released in the tertiary collapse scales with a normalized secondary stress relaxation rate. Together, these observations suggest a way to predict both the timing of rupture and its energetics from the observed stress (or strain) rate during the secondary relaxation stage.

Description: BACKGROUND Although SDF-1/CXCR4 pathway is a potential mechanism of tumor proliferation and progression, the mechanism of controlling CXCR4 expression is not fully understood. This study was to confirm that miR-494-3p might be a potentially post-transcriptional regulator of CXCR4 and over-expression of miR-494 might suppress prostate cancer progression and metastasis. MATERIALS AND METHODS We firstly postulated the post-transcriptional regulation of CXCR4 by miR-494-3p through bioinformatics analysis, and then it was demonstrated that miR-494-3p could regulate the CXCR4 mRNA post-transcriptionally by binding to the predicted site by dual reporter gene assays. The biological effect of miR-494-3p on prostate cancer cells proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and invasion was measured by MTT, TUNEL, flow cytometry, migration, and invasion assays. RESULTS It was shown that the mRNA and protein expression levels of CXCR4 were significantly up-regulated in PC-3 and DU145, whereas barely detected in LNCaP and RWPE-1. However, the CXCR4 protein levels were inversely related to the mature miR-494-3p expression levels in RWPE-1 and prostate cancer cells. The constitutive over-expression of miR-494-3p could down-regulate the protein level of CXCR4 in PC-3 and DU145. MiR-494-3p also could bind to the seed sequences in the 3′-UTR of the CXCR4 gene. Artificial over-expression of miR-494-3p could inhibit the growth, promote the apoptosis, and inhibit the migration and invasion of PC-3 and DU145 cells in vivo. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggested that miR-494-3p might play crucial role in prostate cancer by post-transcriptional regulation to CXCR4 mRNA. MiR-494-3p/CXCR4 pathway may be a potential therapeutic target to prevent prostate cancer progression and metastasis. Prostate © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Description: Understanding the magnitude of intra-Asian crustal shortening and the collision age of Lhasa–Qiangtang terranes requires quantitative constraints on the crustal motion. The key to this is defining the palaeogeography of the Tibetan Plateau, which constitutes a poorly known factor over the entire convergence history. New detrital zircon U–Pb geochronological and palaeomagnetic data from the terrestrial Abushan Formation in the Qiangtang terrane demonstrate that central Tibet was located at 27.5 ± 3.0°N during the time interval of ~111–83 Ma. Our results suggest 7.5 ± 2.9° continental shortening has occurred between central Qiangtang and Mongolia during the India–Asia convergence. Declination anomaly indicates the central Qiangtang terrane has experienced significant clockwise rotation (57.3 ± 3.9°) relative to stable Eurasia. The compilation of palaeomagnetic results since the Cretaceous reveals ~8.5° northward drift of the Lhasa terrane from 123 ± 9 to 97 ± 7 Ma and the palaeolatitudinal overlap between the Lhasa and Qiangtang terranes after ~111–103 Ma. Together with the onset age of the terrestrial Abushan Formation, our results provide the youngest timing ( ca. ~111–103 Ma) for the closure of the Bangong Meso-Tethys Ocean, as well as for the final collision of the Lhasa and Qiangtang terranes.

Description: Hydrogen band electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves have received much attention recently because they are found to frequently span larger spatial areas than the other band EMIC waves. Using test particle simulations, we study the nonlinear effects of hydrogen band EMIC waves on ring current H + ions. A dimensionless parameter R is used to characterize the competition between wave-induced and adiabatic motions. The results indicate that there are three regimes of wave-particle interactions for typical 35 keV H + ions at L =5: diffusive (quasi-linear) behavior when α eq ≤ 35° ( R ≥ 2.45), the nonlinear phase trapping when 35° 〈 α eq 〈 50° (0.75 〈 R 〈 2.45), and both the nonlinear phase bunching and phase trapping when α eq ≥ 50° ( R ≤ 0.75). The phase trapping can transport H + ions towards large pitch angle, while the phase bunching has the opposite effect. The phase trapped H + ions can be significantly accelerated (from 35 keV to over 500 keV) in about 4 minutes, and thus contribute to the formation of high energy components of ring current ions. The results suggest that the effect of hydrogen band EMIC waves is not ignorable in the nonlinear acceleration and resonance scattering of ring current H + ions.

Description: An efficient route for the synthesis of (−)-physostigmine analogs 1a – 1g and 2a – 2k is described. Analogs 1a – 1g were synthesized via copper(I)-catalyzed cycloaddition between the optically pure azide 10 and a variety of alkynes. Similarly, analogs 2a – 2k were prepared through ‘three-component Huisgen cycloaddition’ using various amines, propargyl bromine, and 10 in H 2 O. Facile preparation of 10 via MacMillan 's organocatalysis has made it possible to generate a great diversity of natural product-like compounds that can be screened for anti- Alzheimer 's effects.

Description: The direct conversion of waste cooking oil (WCO) into bio-jet fuel was investigated over the core-shell hierarchical USY@Al-SBA-15 zeolite supported NiMo catalyst. The core-shell structure showed better acid and pore size distribution. The synergetic effect of core-shell micropore and mesopore structure significantly contributed to enhance the selectivity of jet fuel (C 9-15 hydrocarbons) from 9.3% over NiMo/USY up to 35.7% over NiMo/USY@Al-SBA-15 with high isomerization ( iso/n- paraffins ratio=2.7) and moderate aromatic fraction (18.7%). The DCO 2 reaction was selectively enhanced. The optimal selectivity for jet fuel (39.7%) was obtained at 380 o C and high H 2 /oil ratio would decrease the yield of jet fuel. This catalyst showed excellent stability for hydroconversion of WCO to hydrocarbons.
