Notes: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the histometrical and biomechanical anchorage of TiO2-blasted implants and TiO2-blasted implants coated with hydroxyapatite. The control implants were machined. Twenty-six rabbits had a total of 156 implants placed in the proximal part of the tibia. Each rabbit had a machined, a TiO2-blasted, and a TiO2-blasted, HA-coated implant placed in each tibia. After a healing period of 3 and 12 weeks, respectively, the implants placed in the right tibia were used for removal torque test, and the implants placed in the left tibia were used for histomorphometrical measurements. Preoperatively, implants from the same batches were examined topographically with a TopScan 3D system. The TiO2-blasted implants demonstrated significantly higher removal torque values than the machined implants, and they also had a significantly more irregular surface. Furthermore, significantly higher bone-to-implant contact length fractions were measured adjacent to the TiO2-blasted implants in contrast to the machined implants. The advantages of a TiO2-blasted surface were more pronounced after 3 weeks than after 12 weeks. The results demonstrated that it was possible to influence the anchorage of implants by altering the surface structure morphology. The new method with TiO2 blasting on the titanium surface improves the anchorage o fimplants but is not yet practicable for HA coating. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Description: The ability of perennial species to adapt their phenology to present and future temperature conditions is important for their ability to retain high fitness compared to other competing plant species, pests, and pathogens. Many transplanting studies with forest tree species have previously reported substantial genetic differentiation among populations within their native range. However, the question of “how local is local” is still highly debated in conservation biology because studies on genetic patterns of variation within and among populations at the local scale are limited and scattered. In this study, we compare the level of genetic differentiation among populations of six different perennial plant species based on their variation in spring flushing. We assess the level of additive genetic variation present within the local population. For all six species, we find significant differentiation among populations from sites with mean annual temperature ranging between 7.4°C and 8.4°C. The observed variation can only be partly explained by the climate at the site of origin. Most clear relationship between early flushing and higher average spring temperature is observed for the three wind-pollinated species in the study, while the relations are much less clear for the three insect-pollinated species. This supports that pollination system can influence the balance between genetic drift and natural selection and thereby influence the level of local adaptation in long-lived species. On the positive side, we find that the native populations of woody plant species have maintained high levels of additive genetic variation in spring phenology, although this also differs substantially among the six studied species. Our results on quantitative genetic analysis in common garden trials of native woody perennials show high genetic differentiation in spring phenology within and among closely located populations. This suggests that woody species have the inherent capacity to locally adapt at a very fine scale.

Description: Purpose To compare three magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) protocols containing diffusion-weighted imaging with background suppression (DWIBS) and one traditional protocol for detecting extrahepatic colorectal cancer metastases. Materials and Methods Thirty patients with extrahepatic colorectal cancer metastases were scanned in three stations from the skull base to the upper thighs using a 1.5T MRI system with six different MRI sequences; transverse and coronal T 2 -weighted ( T 2 W) turbo spin-echo (TSE), coronal short tau inversion recovery (STIR), 3D T 1 W TSE, DWIBS, and a contrast-enhanced T 1 W 3D gradient echo (GRE) sequence. The six sequences were used to build four hypothetical MRI interpretive sets which were read by two readers in consensus, blinded to prior imaging. Lesions were categorized into 13 anatomic regions. Fluorodeoxyglucose / positron emission tomography / computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) read with full access to prior imaging and clinical records was used as the reference standard. Sensitivity, specificity, and false discovery rate (FDR) were calculated as appropriate and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were constructed. Results In all, 177 malignant lesions were detected by FDG-PET/CT and distributed in 92 out of 390 scanned anatomic regions. The sensitivity was statistically higher in two out of three sets incorporating DWIBS on a per-lesion basis (66.7%, 63.3%, and 66.7% vs. 57.6%) ( P  = 0.01, P  = 0.11, and P  = 0.01, respectively) and in all sets incorporating DWIBS on a per-region basis (75.0%, 75.0%, and 77.2 vs. 66.3%) ( P  = 0.04, P  = 0.04, and P  = 0.01, respectively). There was no difference in specificity, FDR, or AUC ROC . There was no difference between sets containing DWIBS irrespective of the use of a contrast-enhanced sequence. Conclusion MRI sets containing DWIBS had superior sensitivity. This sensitivity was retained when omitting a contrast-enhanced sequence. Level of Evidence : 1 J. Magn. Reson. Imaging 2017.
