Notes: On the Structures of 2-Azapentadienyllithium Compounds2-Azapentadienyllithium compounds 3 - 10 are easily accessible by deprotonation of N-allylimines 1,2 with lithium diisopropylamide. Their structures in THF solution at various temperatures are studied by means of 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. 1-Phenyl-substituted 2-aza-pentadienyllithium derivatives adopt all-trans W conformations, whereas 1-alkylsubstituted 2-azapentadienyllithium compounds show s-cis conformations (sickle shapes). 13C shifts of the 2-azapentadienyl carbon atoms are discussed in terms of HOMO coefficients. The experimental structural results are compared with theoretical data obtained by MNDO and ab initio calculations for the corresponding anions. MNDO results are also given for monomeric 2-azapentadienyllithium conformers 13,14.

Notes: On the Structures of 1-Azapentadienyllithium Compounds1-Azapentadienyllithium compounds 2-6 have been prepared by deprotonation of the α,β-unsaturated imines 1 with lithium diisopropylamide. Their structures in THF solution at various temperatures have been studied by 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. All N-alkyl-substituted derivatives 2 - 5 adopt W conformations of the 1-azapentadienyl unit. The N-tert-butylsubstituted compound 2 shows an (E)-configurated N=C- bond, whereas compounds 3 -5 prefer (Z)-N=C configurations. According to NOE experiments, the triphenyl system 6 has a U-shape structure, probably because of steric interactions of the phenyl substituents. 13C-shifts of the 1-azapentadienyl carbon atoms are discussed in terms of HOMO coefficients. The experimental structural results are compared with theoretical data obtained by MNDO and ab initio calculations for the corresponding anions. MNDO results are also given for monomeric 1-azapentadienyllithium conformers 11.

Notes: Finishing of metals by ion beams. For many years ion beams have been used for doping semiconductors. Recently more and more interest has been shown in them as a method for the finishing of metals. The insertion of an alloying element as an energetic ion into a 0.1 to 1 μm thick surface layer of a metal instead of bulk alloying is interesting, especially with respect to a future shortage of resources. In addition, the ion beam techniques (ion implantation and ion beam mixing) provide the possibility of implanting any element in nearly any substrate. This may often lead even to metastable or amorphous surface structures. In this paper the ion beam techniques are described and the resulting materials are outlined. The possibilities for applications in different fields such as corrosion, mechanical surface properties (tribology), and catalysis are illustrated with examples. They range from pure basic science and applied science to potential procedures to be used in industrial production.

Description / Table of Contents: In carrying on previous research on the preparation of soluble polyamides which are resistant to high temperatures, new aromatic diamines with 1-methyl-quinazoline-dione, 4-methyl-benzothiadiazinone-1.1-dioxid, 1-methyl-quinazolone, benzoxazine-dione, imidazolidone, and phenoxathin ring systems were produced and reacted with aromatic dicarboxylic acid dichlorides, e.g. iso- or terephthalic acid dichloride, in polar solvents, e.g. N.N-dimethylacetamide or N-methylpyrrolidone, to yield high molecular weight polyamides.Fibers and films, some of which being distinguished by good strength properties and good resistance to high temperatures, can be prepared from these solutions. Besides, the new polyamides can be processed from the solutions to yield pliable films showing good stability to high temperatures.
