    Abstract: Replication factor C 5 (RFC5) is involved in a variety of biological functions of cancer. However, the expression pattern of RFC5 and the underlying mechanisms in colorectal cancer (CRC) remain elusive. Here, we show that RFC5 is significantly upregulated in CRC tissues and cells. Patients with CRC and increased RFC5 levels have an unfavorable prognosis. RFC5 can promote the proliferation, migration, and invasion of CRC cells and inhibit the apoptosis of CRC cells. Additionally, upstream of RFC5, we constructed the competing endogenous RNA network and confirmed that RFC5 in this network was inhibited by miR‐3614‐5p by directly targeting its 3′‐untranslated regions. We verified that circ_0038985, which is positively correlated with RFC5, directly targeted miR‐3614‐5p. Overexpression of circ_0038985 promoted CRC cell migration and invasion, and these effects were partially reversed by the reintroduction of miR‐3614‐5p. Moreover, we found that RFC5 may promote the vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFa)/vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2)/extracellular signal‐regulated protein kinase (ERK) pathway. The knockdown of RFC5 reduced CRC tumorigenesis in vivo. Collectively, these data demonstrate that the circ_0038985/miR‐3614‐5p/RFC5 axis plays a critical role in the progression of CRC, and RFC5 may promote CRC progression by affecting the VEGFa/VEGFR2/ERK pathway.

    Abstract: Trimethyltin chloride (TMT) is a potent neurotoxin that causes neuroinflammation and neuronal cell death. Melatonin is a well‐known anti‐inflammatory agent with significant neuroprotective activity. Male C57BL/6J mice were intraperitoneally injected with a single dose of melatonin (10 mg/kg) before exposure to TMT (2.8 mg/kg, ip). Thereafter, the mice received melatonin (10 mg/kg, ip) once a day for another three consecutive days. Melatonin dramatically alleviated TMT‐induced neurotoxicity in mice by attenuating hippocampal neuron loss, inhibiting epilepsy‐like seizures, and ameliorating memory deficits. Moreover, melatonin markedly suppressed TMT‐induced neuroinflammatory responses and astrocyte activation, as shown by a decrease in inflammatory cytokine production as well as the downregulation of neurotoxic reactive astrocyte phenotype markers. Mechanistically, serine peptidase inhibitor clade A member 3N (SERPINA3N) was identified as playing a central role in the protective effects of melatonin based on quantitative proteome and bioinformatics analysis. Most importantly, melatonin significantly suppressed TMT‐induced SERPINA3N upregulation at both the mRNA and protein levels. The overexpression of Serpina3n in the mouse hippocampus abolished the protective effects of melatonin on TMT‐induced neuroinflammation and neurotoxicity. Melatonin protected cells against TMT‐induced neurotoxicity by inhibiting SERPINA3N‐mediated neuroinflammation. Melatonin may be a promising and practical agent for reducing TMT‐induced neurotoxicity in clinical practice.

    Abstract: This study was to explore whether Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) improve memory impairment by alleviating neuroinflammation signaling in mice with status epilepticus. Methods The status epilepticus (SE) mice model was established by pilocarpine and treated with 100 mg / kg of GBE for 14 days. Spontaneous alternation of Y‐maze and new object recognition were used to explore memory impairment. To examine glial cell activation, we performed immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining. The activation of NF‐κB signaling and the expression level of lncRNA‐COX2 were detected by Western blot and qRT‐PCR, respectively. Adeno‐associated virus lncRNA‐COX2 was injected into mice for overexpression of lncRNA‐COX2. Results After GBE treatment, the spontaneous alternation rate and the recognition coefficient in SE mice were both increased. Moreover, activation of glial cells, NF‐κB signaling and lncRNA‐COX2 were significantly decreased in SE mice. In the GBE‐treated SE mice with lncRNA‐COX2 overexpression, NF‐κB signaling was up‐regulated again; the reduced level of inflammation factors was reversed; the GBE‐rescued spontaneous alternation rate of Y‐maze was eliminated. Conclusion Our results suggested that GBE reduces the hippocampal inflammation by down‐regulating lncRNA‐COX2 / NF‐κB signaling in the SE mice, leading to the decrease of neuronal damage and the improvement of memory functions.

    Abstract: We have explored the osteogenic potency of adipose‐derived stem cells from osteoporotic patients (opASCs). opASCs were osteogenically induced in vitro with collagen I hydrogel or in culture plate. Detection of alkaline phosphatase (ALPase) and cell mineralisation, and quantitative RT‐PCR of collagen I, osteocalcin and bone sialoprotein were undertaken. Proliferation and morphology studies were also performed. After 14 days, opASCs‐collagen I hydrogel composite was implanted into nude mice for 4 weeks prior to radiographic and histological analysis. Staining of ALPase and cell mineralisation was strongly positive in opASCs. Fibroblast‐like opASCs induced with collagen I hydrogel were evenly distributed and proliferated at a higher rate than in culture plates, showing similar growth curves for both genders. Expression of ALPase activity, cell mineralisation and osteogenic specific genes were higher in opASCs with collagen I hydrogel (male samples had better osteogenicity than female samples) than in culture plates. After implantation for 4 weeks, radiopaque area signifying new bone tissue was observed in opASCs‐collagen I hydrogel composite, with no donor gender differences. Thus opASCs with collagen I hydrogel have adequate osteogenic potency and offer new possibilities for osteoporosis‐related bone tissue engineering in male and female patients.

    Abstract: Uncertainty remains regarding the association between resting heart rate (RHR) with hypertension and stroke because of limited and inconsistent data. We assessed the association between RHR, hypertension, and stroke. In this cross‐sectional study, 14 677 participants from the China Hypertension Survey study were analyzed. The history of stroke was conducted by questionnaires. RHR was measured by the standardized electronic monitors. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the association between RHR, hypertension, and stroke. Moreover, a generalized additive model (GAM) and smooth curve fitting (penalized spline method) were conducted to assess the association between RHR and stroke in different status of hypertension. Overall, each 10 beats per minute (bpm) increase in RHR was associated with an 18% increased prevalence of stroke ( P  = 0.017). Subjects with RHR  〉  80 bpm were associated with a higher prevalence of stroke (OR = 1.47; 95% CI, 1.08‐2.01) compared with those with RHR ≤ 80 bpm. Similarly, hypertensives had a higher prevalence of stroke than normotensives (OR = 3.76; 95% CI, 2.39‐5.92). Hypertensives with RHR  〉  80 bpm had the highest prevalence of stroke compared with their counterparts (OR = 5.47; 95% CI, 3.13‐9.56). The fully adjusted smooth curve fitting presented a linear association between RHR and stroke among participants with hypertension, but almost horizontal association among participants without hypertension. In conclusion, elevated RHR and hypertension were independently and jointly associated with the increased prevalence of stroke. These findings suggested that elevated RHR was associated with increased prevalence of stroke especially among hypertensives.

    Abstract: Through a simple and effective method for preparing broadband reflective liquid crystal films, the advantages of the three‐layer system are expanded based on the two‐layer system. The cholesteric liquid crystals form a prepolymerized layer after semi‐curing. In the design of the top prepolymerization layer, there is less content of the chiral compound R5011, which results in the formation of cholesteric liquid crystal molecules with a larger pitch. Mainly by controlling the content of polymerizable monomers and UV‐absorbing dyes in cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs), a polymer network with density gradient distribution suitable for substance diffusion is formed, and the oleophobic substrate on one side of the low‐density polymer network is more likely to be peeled off. In the design of the lowest prepolymerization layer, the content of R5011 is higher, which results in the formation of cholesteric liquid crystals with a larger pitch. One side substrate of two cholesteric liquid crystal cassettes is peeled off and merged into a new liquid crystal cassette whose left and right sides are stacked with septum pads (20 μm), and the nematic liquid crystals are poured into the middle layer to form a three‐layer integrated film. The polymer network of the polymer‐stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals (PSCLCs) itself in the bilayer was used as a diffusion channel. Chiral compounds and UV‐absorbing dyes were diffused from the cholesteric liquid crystal layer to the intermediate nematic liquid crystal layer by diffusion gradient method, resulting in liquid crystal films with arbitrary wavelength bands and ultrawide broadband reflection.

    Abstract: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common cancer‐related deaths throughout the world. Ferroptosis is a recently regulated form of cell death, lately gains attention. MicroRNA‐15a‐3p (miR‐15a‐3p) plays a regulatory role in various kinds of cancers. However, the role of miR‐15a‐3p in cellular ferroptosis is still unclear. Here, we aimed to clarify whether miR‐15a‐3p could regulate the ferroptosis of CRC. Here we identified miR‐15a‐3p positively regulates ferroptosis via directly targeting glutathione peroxidase glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) in CRC. Overexpression of miR‐15a‐3p repressed GPX4 through binding to the 3′‐untranslated region of GPX4, resulting in increased reactive oxygen species level, intracellular Fe 2+ level, and malondialdehyde accumulation in vitro and in vivo. Correspondingly, suppression of miR‐15a‐3p reduced the sensitivity of CRC cells to erastin and GPX4. Taken together, these data demonstrate that miR‐15a‐3p regulates ferroptosis through targeting GPX4 in CRC cells, illustrating the novel role of microRNA in ferroptosis.

    Abstract: To investigate differences in the objective and subjective visual quality of patients with high myopia following implantable collamer lens V4c (ICL V4c) versus small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) early postoperatively. Methods This prospective analysis included 94 eyes of 57 patients (8 males) in the ICL V4c group (mean spherical equivalent (SE), −8.07 ± 1.03 dioptres (D)) and 103 eyes of 57 patients (13 males) in the SMILE group (mean SE, −7.85 ± 0.78 D). Refractive parameters and wavefront aberrations were recorded preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively. Subjective visual quality was scored with the Quality of Vision questionnaire, and operation satisfaction was evaluated 6 months postoperatively. Results At 6 months postoperatively, the efficacy index was 1.17 ± 0.16 in the ICL and 1.09 ± 0.20 in the SMILE group; the safety index was 1.21 ± 0.18 in the ICL and 1.12 ± 0.16 in the SMILE group. A significant increase in total higher‐order aberrations (HOAs) in both the ICL and SMILE groups was observed, but to a lesser degree in ICL (p  〈  0.05). In the ICL group, trefoil significantly increased (p  〈  0.05), whereas in the SMILE group, coma, trefoil and spherical aberration significantly increased (p  〈  0.05). Glare, haloes and blurred vision had the highest incidences after both types of surgery, and postoperative haloes were significantly more common following ICL; 96.1% of ICL‐treated and 94.9% of SMILE‐treated patients were satisfied with their visual outcomes. Conclusion ICL V4c caused lower HOAs induction than SMILE. Despite the postoperative visual disturbances, both ICL and SMILE provided good efficacy, safety, predictability and high satisfaction in correcting high myopia.

    Abstract: To explore nanocatalysts with high electro‐catalytic performance and less loading of precious metals, efforts have been made to develop electrochemical methods with high spatial resolution at the single nanoparticle level. Herein, a highly sensitive single‐nanoparticle coulometry method is successfully developed to study the electrochemical activity and oscillation of single PtTe nanocatalysts. Based on microbattery reactions involving the formic acid electro‐oxidation and the deposition of Ag on the single PtTe nanocatalyst surface, this method enables the transition from the undetectable sub‐fA electric signal of the formic acid electro‐oxidation into strong localized surface plasmon resonance scattering signal of Ag detected by dark‐field microscopy. The lowest limiting current for a single nanocatalyst is found to be as low as 25.8 aA. Different trends of activity versus the formic acid concentration and types of activity of the single nanocatalyst have been discovered. Unveiled frequency‐amplitude graph shows that the two electrochemical oscillation modes of low frequency with high amplitude and vice versa coexist in a single PtTe nanocatalyst, indicating the abundantly smooth surfaces and defects of nanocatalysts. This conducted study will open up the new avenue for further behavioral and mechanistic investigation of more types of nanocatalysts in the electrochemistry community.

    Abstract: This study focused on the individual effects of l ‐arginine and l ‐lysine on the physicochemical properties of pale, soft and exudative (PSE)‐like chicken batter and sausages. The two amino acids decreased the cooking loss from 7.13 to 1.79 and 2.36%, respectively. They increased the hardness from 24.31 to 47.27 and 41.64 N, cohesiveness from 0.60 to 0.69 and 0.69, and chewiness from 12.15 to 28.30 and 22.80 N of PSE‐like sausage with a dense and uniform microstructure, respectively. Moreover, the two amino acids decreased the total expressible liquid and expressible fat, increased viscosity, and increased the storage and loss modulus of PSE‐like meat batters with smaller oil droplets. Differential scanning calorimetry revealed that the two amino acids increased T max1 and T max2 . In summary, l ‐arginine and l ‐lysine improved the quality attributes of PSE‐like sausages by improving the emulsifying and gelling properties of PSE‐like meat batters.
