Abstract: The ongoing discoveries of natural‐gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean region significantly affect international relations. Since their viability has been increasingly confirmed, they have attracted public attention in the international energy market. Focusing on current gas production and trading in the Middle East, this paper studies the anticipated impact of gas production in the sea on geopolitical relations in the Middle East and investigates how these results may change the geoeconomic strategies of global energy‐market players as well as nearby countries. In addition, our analyses provide comprehensive insights into the evolution of gas discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Abstract: Doubly boron‐doped thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters based on a 9,10‐diboraanthracene (DBA) acceptor decorated with ortho ‐donor groups (Cz2 o DBA, 2 ; BuCz2 o DBA, 3 ; DMAC2 o DBA, 4 ) are prepared to realize high‐efficiency green‐to‐red organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs). X‐ray diffraction analyses of 2 and 4 reveal the symmetrical and highly twisted ortho ‐donor–acceptor–donor (D‐A‐D) structure of the emitters. The twisted conformation leads to a very small energy splitting (Δ E ST 〈 0.08 eV) between the excited singlet and triplet states that gives rise to strong TADF, as supported by theoretical studies. Depending on the strength of the donor moieties, the emission color is fine‐tuned in the visible region from green ( 2 ) to yellow ( 3 ) to red ( 4 ). Carbazole‐containing 2 and 3 exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) approaching 100 %, whereas DMAC‐substituted 4 is moderately emissive (PLQY=44 %) in a doped host film. Highly efficient green‐to‐red TADF‐OLEDs are realized with the proposed ortho ‐D‐A‐D compounds as emitters. The green and yellow OLEDs incorporating Cz2 o DBA ( 2 ) and BuCz2 o DBA ( 3 ) emitters exhibit high external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 26.6 % and 21.6 %, respectively. In particular, the green device shows an excellent power efficiency above 100 lm W −1 . A red OLED fabricated with a DMAC2 o DBA ( 4 ) emitter exhibits a maximum EQE of 10.1 % with an electroluminescence peak at 615 nm.

Abstract: Pleural empyema is rare in neonates, and treatment with systemic antibiotics and tube drainage may fail because of the thick viscous fluid, bacterial products with fibrin deposition, and multiple loculations. Intrapleural fibrinolytic therapy with urokinase is an effective and non‐invasive treatment option that avoids surgical intervention, although its use in neonates has not been studied extensively. In this report, we describe the case of a 13‐day‐old male neonate with Escherichia coli sepsis and pneumonia, which rapidly progressed to parapneumonic effusion and pleural empyema. After inadequate response to i.v. antibiotics and chest tube drainage, the patient was successfully treated with intrapleural urokinase.

Abstract: Solid–liquid interfaces are ubiquitous in scientifically and technologically important systems, and they govern complex chemophysical processes such as those in electrochemistry and heterogeneous catalysis. Atomic‐level elucidation of interfacial structures has been extensively pursued; however, related research is still limited. A major obstacle lies in the intrinsic character of interfaces: they are located between two bulk phases that make the application of spectroscopic or surface‐science techniques be difficult. Although this suggests the possibility of employing computational approaches to explore interfacial structures, modern molecular simulation methods suffer from an inability to simulate large interfacial systems in a sufficient time scale at the all‐atom resolution. To develop a method capable of simulating solid–liquid interfaces, we have been developing a mean‐field quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) method. This Review briefly summarizes the theoretical background of mean‐field QM/MM, as well as recent efforts to advance it. Furthermore, we summarize several studies performed based on this method.
