Abstract: Our purpose is to investigate whether polymorphisms of 102 T/C and ‐1438 A/G in 5 HTR 2 A are associated with T ourette syndrome ( TS ) in C hinese H an population. Methods A total of 178 TS trios were recruited in this study. After the allelic and genotypic distributions of two polymorphisms were genotyped using polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR‐RFLP), we compared their genetic distributions with what is expected with H ardy– W einberg to explore whether there might be an association of these polymorphisms with TS by haplotype relative risk ( HRR ) and transmission disequilibrium test ( TDT ) statistics. Results Our results showed that no significant associations were found between the HTR2A 102 T/C and ‐1438 A/G polymorphisms and TS (for HTR2A 102 T/C : TDT  = 2.041, df = 1, P  = 0.175; HRR  = 1.468, χ 2  = 1.905, P  = 0.168, 95% confidence interval: 0.850–2.535; for HTR2A : ‐1438A/G, TDT  = 0.093, df = 1, P  = 0.819; HRR  = 0.965, χ 2  = 0.018, P  = 0.894, 95% confidence interval: 0.574–1.624). Discussion Our study suggested that the HTR2A 102 T/C and ‐1438 A/G polymorphisms may not be associated with susceptibility to TS , and thus do not play a major role in the development of TS in the C hinese H an population. However, these results need to be confirmed in a larger sample collected from different populations.

Abstract: Long non‐coding RNA plasmacytoma variant translocation 1 (lnc‐PVT1) exacerbates inflammation and induces T helper (Th) 1/Th2 imbalance in allergic diseases, but its clinical role in allergic rhinitis (AR) remains unclear. Hence, we conducted this study to compare lnc‐PVT1 expression among AR children, disease controls (DCs), and health controls (HCs), aiming to investigate its clinical application in AR children. Methods Sixty AR children, 30 DCs, and 30 HCs were enrolled in the study, and then, their lnc‐PVT1 expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cell was detected. Serum interferon‐gamma (IFN‐γ), interleukin 10 (IL‐10), Th1, and Th2 cells in AR children were also analyzed. Besides, lnc‐PVT1 was also detected at Week (W)4 after treatment in AR patients. Results Lnc‐PVT1 was upregulated in AR children compared with DCs and HCs (both p   〈  0.001). Lnc‐PVT1 was positively related to nasal rhinorrhea score, itching score, congestion score, and total nasal symptom score (TNSS) in AR children (all p   〈  0.050), instead of sneezing score ( p  = 0.115). Lnc‐PVT1 negatively associated with Th1 cells in AR children ( p  = 0.028) also exhibited a negative correlation trend with IFN‐γ (but without statistical significance) ( p  = 0.065). Differently, lnc‐PVT1 was positively related to Th2 cells ( p  = 0.012) and IL‐10 ( p  = 0.021) in AR children. Besides, lnc‐PVT1 and TNSS were reduced at W4 after treatment in AR children (both p   〈  0.001); notably, lnc‐PVT1 expression decline was correlated with TNSS decline during treatment ( p  = 0.013). Conclusion Lnc‐PVT1 works as a biomarker, whose aberrant expression is related to disease severity, Th1/Th2 imbalance, and its decrement can reflect treatment outcome in AR children.

Abstract: The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is a quantum coherent transport phenomenon that conventionally vanishes at elevated temperatures because of thermal dephasing. Therefore, it is puzzling that the AHE can survive in heavy metal (HM)/antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator (AFMI) heterostructures at high temperatures yet disappears at low temperatures. In this paper, an unconventional high‐temperature AHE in HM/AFMI is observed only around the Néel temperature of AFM, with large anomalous Hall resistivity up to 40 nΩ cm is reported. This mechanism is attributed to the emergence of a noncollinear AFM spin texture with a non‐zero net topological charge. Atomistic spin dynamics simulation shows that such a unique spin texture can be stabilized by the subtle interplay among the collinear AFM exchange coupling, interfacial Dyzaloshinski–Moriya interaction, thermal fluctuation, and bias magnetic field.

Abstract: The main challenge faced by the forthcoming human–computer interaction is that biological systems and electronic devices adopt two different information carriers, i.e., ions and electrons, respectively. To bridge the gap between these two systems, developing ion/electron‐coupling devices for logic operation is a feasible and effective approach. Accordingly, herein a supercapacitor‐based ionic diode (CAPode) that takes electrochemically amorphized molybdenum oxide as the working electrode is developed. Benefiting from its unique size and charge dual ion‐sieving effects, the molybdenum oxide electrode exhibits a record‐high rectification ratio of 136, which is over 10 times higher than those of reported systems. It also delivers an ultrahigh specific capacitance of 448 F g⁻ 1 and an excellent cycling stability of up to 20 000 cycles, greatly outperforming those of previous works. These excellent rectification capability and electrochemical performances allow the as‐built CAPode to work well in AND and OR logic gates, validating great potential in ion/electron‐coupling logic operations. More attractively, the superior biocompatibilities of molybdenum oxide and relevant constituent materials enable the constructed CAPode to be applied as bioelectronics without regard to biosafety, paving a new way toward forthcoming human–computer interaction.

Abstract: How complex interactions of genetic, environmental factors and aging jointly contribute to dopaminergic degeneration in Parkinson's disease (PD) is largely unclear. Here, we applied frequent gene co‐expression analysis on human patient substantia nigra ‐specific microarray datasets to identify potential novel disease‐related genes. In vivo Drosophila studies validated two of 32 candidate genes, a chromatin‐remodeling factor SMARCA4 and a biliverdin reductase BLVRA. Inhibition of SMARCA4 was able to prevent aging‐dependent dopaminergic degeneration not only caused by overexpression of BLVRA but also in four most common Drosophila PD models. Furthermore, down‐regulation of SMARCA4 specifically in the dopaminergic neurons prevented shortening of life span caused by α‐synuclein and LRRK2. Mechanistically, aberrant SMARCA4 and BLVRA converged on elevated ERK‐ETS activity, attenuation of which by either genetic or pharmacological manipulation effectively suppressed dopaminergic degeneration in Drosophila in vivo. Down‐regulation of SMARCA4 or drug inhibition of MEK/ERK also mitigated mitochondrial defects in PINK1 (a PD‐associated gene)‐deficient human cells. Our findings underscore the important role of epigenetic regulators and implicate a common signaling axis for therapeutic intervention in normal aging and a broad range of age‐related disorders including PD.

Abstract: In view of future changes in climate, it is important to better understand how different plant functional groups ( PFG s) respond to warmer and drier conditions, particularly in temperate regions where an increase in both the frequency and severity of drought is expected. The patterns and mechanisms of immediate and delayed impacts of extreme drought on vegetation growth remain poorly quantified. Using satellite measurements of vegetation greenness, in‐situ tree‐ring records, eddy‐covariance CO 2 and water flux measurements, and meta‐analyses of source water of plant use among PFG s, we show that drought legacy effects on vegetation growth differ markedly between forests, shrubs and grass across diverse bioclimatic conditions over the temperate Northern Hemisphere. Deep−rooted forests exhibit a drought legacy response with reduced growth during up to 4 years after an extreme drought, whereas shrubs and grass have drought legacy effects of approximately 2 years and 1 year, respectively. Statistical analyses partly attribute the differences in drought legacy effects among PFG s to plant eco‐hydrological properties (related to traits), including plant water use and hydraulic responses. These results can be used to improve the representation of drought response of different PFG s in land surface models, and assess their biogeochemical and biophysical feedbacks in response to a warmer and drier climate.

Abstract: Glioma is the most common and aggressive primary brain tumor in adults with high morbidity and mortality. Rapid proliferation and diffuse migration are the main obstacles to successful glioma treatment. Xanthatin, a sesquiterpene lactone purified from Xanthium strumarium L., possesses a significant antitumor role in several malignant tumors. In this study, we report that xanthatin suppressed glioma cells proliferation and induced apoptosis in a time‐ and concentration‐dependent manner, and was accompanied by autophagy inhibition displaying a significantly reduced LC3 punctate fluorescence and LC3II/I ratio, decreased level of Beclin 1, while increased accumulation of p62. Notably, treating glioma cells with xanthatin resulted in obvious activation of the PI3K‐Akt–mTOR signaling pathway, as indicated by increased mTOR and Akt phosphorylation, decreased ULK1 phosphorylation, which is important in modulating autophagy. Furthermore, xanthatin‐mediated pro‐apoptosis in glioma cells was significantly reversed by autophagy inducers (rapamycin or Torin1), or PI3K‐mTOR inhibitor NVP‐BEZ235. Taken together, these findings indicate that anti‐proliferation and pro‐apoptosis effects of xanthatin in glioma are most likely by inhibiting autophagy via activation of PI3K‐Akt–mTOR pathway, suggesting a potential therapeutic strategy against glioma.

Abstract: The relationship between valence state of cerium ion and the catalytic activity for dimethyl carbonate (DMC) synthesis directly from carbon dioxide and methanol was investigated by using four CeO 2 catalysts calcined at the different temperatures, which showed different concentrations of Ce 4+ analyzed by XPS. In situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to probe CO 2 and methanol adsorption species on ceria surface. With the calcination temperature increasing from 323 to 973 K, the concentration of Ce 4+ increased, leading to larger proportion of active methanol adsorptions (Types I and II methoxy) and CO 2 adsorptions (bidentate carbonate). Meanwhile, high‐calcination temperature also led to small surface area and more –OH group dehydration, which resulted in the less formation of active Types I and II methoxy and bidentate carbonate. As a result, the ceria calcined at 773 K showed the highest activity and the one calcined at 973 K performed the lowest.

Abstract: In this work, Zr‐doped CaO‐based sorbents were prepared at several kilograms per batch using a simple sol–gel technique. CO 2 adsorption performance and cycling stability of the synthesized sorbents were significantly improved in consequence of the incorporation of Zr component. Technological conditions of the scale‐up production were optimized, including precursor concentration of calcium, amount of citric acid, gelification temperature, and gelification time, which played important roles in the sol–gel preparation process. The factors affecting the carbonation/calcination process of sorbent (volume fraction of CO 2 and calcination temperature) were also investigated. A 4‐kg CaO‐based sorbents, with appropriate nanosize CaO crystallite, loose and porous structure, and uniform distribution of Ca and Zr, have been synthesized successfully at one batch, which exhibited a final CO 2 adsorption capacity of 5.86 mol‐CO 2 /kg‐ads under a lower volume fraction of CO 2 (15%) and a higher calcination temperature (900°C) after 45 adsorption/desorption cycles.
