Abstract: This study examines the effects of early life and in utero exposure to cold weather shocks on the incidence of growth stunting for children under age five in Tanzania. We find that an increase of 10 percentage points in the proportion of days with temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius (one standard deviation below the long‐term average) is associated with an increase in the probability of stunting and severe stunting by 2.0 and 1.4 percentage points (equivalent to 5.5 and 9.7 percent of the mean stunting and severe stunting), respectively. The results also show strong effects of in utero exposure during the second trimester of pregnancy on child stunting and wasting. In terms of the mechanisms, we find that the effects on disease environment, food insecurity, and reduced agricultural productivity are the possible channels driving the results.

Abstract: Students’ out‐of‐school activities and time use can play a crucial role in facilitating the effect of schools on students’ achievement. Using data from Seoul, South Korea, where students are randomly assigned into schools, we show that when single‐sex schools improve students’ test performance, their effect is positive on students’ time spent on study‐related out‐of‐school activities. Our results indicate that out‐of‐school activities explain roughly 21%–30% of the effect of single‐sex schooling on test performance.

Abstract: We examine mothers' relative labour market outcomes around the first childbirth in South Korea, a country with the highest gender pay gaps and the lowest fertility rate among the OECD countries. Using an event study approach, we find that while fathers remain unaffected, mothers' earnings drop sharply by 66.2 per cent over the long run, mostly driven by a reduction in labour force participation. For women who continue to work, motherhood lowers the probability of entering male‐dominated occupations and industries but increases the probability of working in female‐dominated occupations and industries. Finally, we find that motherhood has a stronger negative effect on labour market outcomes for less‐educated mothers, young mothers, mothers who first bear children within two years of marriage, and mothers with three or more children.
