    Kurzfassung: The radioresistance of nasopharyngeal carcinoma ( NPC ) may be related to cancer stem cells ( CSC s), and the characteristics of CSC s may be maintained by telomerase activity. In this study, we explored the CSC ‐like characteristics and telomerase activity of the NPC radioresistant cell line CNE ‐2R. This work provides a foundation for future studies on stem cell‐targeted therapies by targeting the radioresistance of NPC . The expression of stem cell‐related genes/proteins and the hTERT gene/protein in CNE ‐2R and its parent radiosensitive cell line CNE ‐2 were detected using qPCR /Western Blot. Label‐retaining cells ( LRC s) were detected through immunocytochemistry, and telomerase activity was detected using a PCR ‐ ELISA kit. CD 133 expression was detected with flow cytometry. CNE ‐2R‐ CD 133+ and CNE ‐2R‐ CD 133− cells were separated with magnetic‐activated cell sorting. The proliferation and tumorigenesis capacities of CNE ‐2R‐ CD 133+, CNE ‐2R‐ CD 133−, and CNE ‐2R cells were compared with a CCK ‐8 assay, sphere formation assay, and an in vivo experiment. Our results showed that the expression of stem cell‐related genes and the hTERT gene in CNE ‐2R cells was higher than those in CNE ‐2 cells. Similarly, the expression of stem cell‐related proteins and the hTERT protein in CNE ‐2R cells was markedly higher than those in CNE ‐2 cells. The proportion of LRC s in CNE ‐2R and CNE ‐2 cells was (3.10 ± 0.63%) vs (0.40 ± 0.35%; P  〈   0.001), respectively. Telomerase activity in CNE ‐2R cells was remarkably higher than that in CNE ‐2 cells. Flow cytometry suggested that the CD 133 positive rates in CNE ‐2R and CNE ‐2 cells were (2.49 ± 0.56%) vs (0.76 ± 0.25%; P  =   0.008), respectively. Meanwhile, the proliferation capacity, tumorigenesis capacity, and telomerase activity of CNE ‐2R‐ CD 133+ cells were notably higher than those of CNE ‐2R‐ CD 133− and CNE ‐2R cells. Collectively, CNE ‐2R displayed CSC ‐like characteristics; our results also showed that CNE ‐2R cells, especially the sorted CSC s, had high telomerase activity levels.

    Kurzfassung: One‐dimensional (1D) magnetoelectric multiferroics are promising multifunctional materials for miniaturized sensors, actuators, and memories. However, 1D materials with both ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism are quite rare. Herein, using first‐principles calculations, a series of fullerene‐based 1D chains, namely U 2 C@C 80 ‐M (M = Cr, Mn, Mo, and Ru) 1D chains with both ferroelectric (FE) and ferromagnetic (FM) properties is designed. Compared to individual U 2 C@ I h (7)‐C 80 , the spontaneous polarization (Ps) in 1D chains is enhanced by about two to four times owing to the interaction between U 2 C@ I h (7)‐C 80 fullerene and M (M = Cr, Mn, Mo, and Ru) atoms. Meanwhile, the introduction of transition metal atoms dopes electrons into U's 5 f orbitals, leading to numerous intriguing magnetic properties, such as U 2 C@C 80 ‐Cr and U 2 C@C 80 ‐Mo as 1D ferromagnetic semiconductors, U 2 C@C 80 ‐Ru as 1D ferrimagnetic (FiM) semiconductor, and U 2 C@C 80 ‐Mn as 1D antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductor. Excitingly, it is found that magnetic ordering and electrical polarization can be modulated independently by linking different transition metal atoms. These findings not only broaden the range of 1D multiferroic materials, but also provide promising candidates for novel electronic and spintronic applications.

    Kurzfassung: Sterols have long been associated with diverse fields, such as cancer treatment, drug development, and plant growth; however, their underlying mechanisms and functions remain enigmatic. Here, we unveil a critical role played by a GmNF‐YC9‐mediated CCAAT‐box transcription complex in modulating the steroid metabolism pathway within soybeans. Specifically, this complex directly activates squalene monooxygenase (GmSQE1), which is a rate‐limiting enzyme in steroid synthesis. Our findings demonstrate that overexpression of either GmNF‐YC9 or GmSQE1 significantly enhances soybean stress tolerance, while the inhibition of SQE weakens this tolerance. Field experiments conducted over two seasons further reveal increased yields per plant in both GmNF‐YC9 and GmSQE1 overexpressing plants under drought stress conditions. This enhanced stress tolerance is attributed to the reduction of abiotic stress‐induced cell oxidative damage. Transcriptome and metabolome analyses shed light on the upregulation of multiple sterol compounds, including fucosterol and soyasaponin II, in GmNF‐YC9 and GmSQE1 overexpressing soybean plants under stress conditions. Intriguingly, the application of soybean steroids, including fucosterol and soyasaponin II, significantly improves drought tolerance in soybean, wheat, foxtail millet, and maize. These findings underscore the pivotal role of soybean steroids in countering oxidative stress in plants and offer a new research strategy for enhancing crop stress tolerance and quality from gene regulation to chemical intervention.

    Kurzfassung: What is already known about this topic? Midwifery is a key element of maternal and newborn health care. Using midwife‐led care for normal labour is a recommended practice in several developed countries, eg, Sweden, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Australia. There are a limited number of Chinese studies that addressed midwife‐led care. What this paper adds? Midwife‐led care during delivery can shorten the length of labour and reduce the caesarean rate and analgesic use. Midwife‐led care during labour significantly reduced the risk of newborn hospitalizations and decreased the rate of postpartum haemorrhage, thus improving delivery outcomes and promoting maternal and child health. The implications of this paper: The findings provide evidence to support the feasibility and the beneficial effect of midwife‐led care during delivery for women in Mainland China.

    Kurzfassung: Gene therapy that employs therapeutic nucleic acids to modulate gene expression has shown great promise for diseases therapy, and its clinical application relies on the development of effective gene vector. Herein a novel gene delivery strategy by just using natural polyphenol (‐)‐epigallocatechin‐3‐O‐gallate (EGCG) as raw material is reported. EGCG first intercalates into nucleic acids to yield a complex, which then oxidizes and self‐polymerizes to form tea polyphenols nanoparticles (TPNs) for effective nucleic acids encapsulation. This is a general method to load any types of nucleic acids with single or double strands and short or long sequences. Such TPNs‐based vector achieves comparable gene loading capacity to commonly used cationic materials, but showing lower cytotoxicity. TPNs can effectively penetrate inside cells, escape from endo/lysosomes, and release nucleic acids in response to intracellular glutathione to exert biological functions. To demonstrate the in vivo application, an anti‐caspase‐3 small interfering ribonucleic acid is loaded into TPNs to treat concanavalin A‐induced acute hepatitis, and excellent therapeutic efficacy is obtained in combination with the intrinsic activities of TPNs vector. This work provides a simple, versatile, and cost‐effective gene delivery strategy. Given the biocompatibility and intrinsic biofunctions, this TPNs‐based gene vector holds great potential to treat various diseases.

    Kurzfassung: The polymers [Cd(L)(H 2 O)] ( 1 ) and [Zn(L)(4, 4′‐bipy)(H 2 O) 3 ] ( 2 ) (L = 2, 2‐dimethylsuccinated anion) were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and characterized by IR spectrosopy, elemental analyses, and single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis. The latter reveals that the polymer 1 exhibits a four‐connected dia‐topology net based on the novel tetranuclear Cd II units, whereas polymer 2 displays a 4‐connnected CdSO 4 topology net. Moreover, the photoluminescent properties of 1 and 2 were investigated.

    Kurzfassung: A growing body of evidence indicates that patients with colorectal serrated lesions, especially advanced serrated lesions (ASLs), are at risk of subsequent malignancy. This study aimed to analyze the clinicopathological features of ASLs and the association between ASLs and synchronous advanced colorectal neoplasia (sACN) in a single center of China. METHODS A retrospective cross‐sectional study of consecutive symptomatic patients and healthy individuals who underwent colonoscopy between January 2010 and March 2016 was performed. Clinicopathological characteritics of the patients with ASLs were documented from the colonoscopy database. RESULTS Colorectal serrated lesions were pathologically confirmed in 277 ( N = 38 981, 0.7%) cases. Among them, 156 (56.3%) were found to have ASLs, with a total of 161 lesions including 71 sessile serrated adenoma/polyps (SSA/P) and 90 traditional serrated adenomas (TSAs). There were no differences in age and gender between the ASL and non‐ASL patients. Among the 161 ASLs, 29 (18.0%) were ≥10 mm in diameter. Compared with non‐ASLs, ASLs appeared more in the proximal colon ( P = 0.007). Flat and subpedunculated lesions were more commonly found in the ASL group compared with the non‐ASL group. Nearly all ASLs (160/161) had dysplasia. Moreover, 16 sACN lesions were found in 156 ASL patients, and large diameter (≥10 mm) might be a significant risk factor for sACN (odds ratio 4.35, 95% confidence interval 1.467–12.894, P 〈 0.05). CONCLUSIONS ASLs are more likely to occur in the proximal colon, and mainly present as flat and sub‐pedunculated types. Large ASLs are significantly associated with sACN.

    Kurzfassung: To investigate the clinical value of fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) in lung cancer patients. Methods A total of 172 healthy control subjects and 164 patients with histopathologically confirmed lung cancer were enrolled in this study. The FeNO measurements and pulmonary function tests were conducted in the Chinese PLA General Hospital. The recorded data included FeNO, the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV 1 ), the forced vital capacity (FVC), FEV 1 /FVC, the FEV 1 (% predicted), the demographic characteristics, the presence of complications and the smoking status. Results The patients with lung cancer had a significantly higher level of eNO than the healthy control subjects (33.85 ± 15.63 ppb, n  = 163; 16.83 ± 4.17 ppb, n  = 172; P   〈  0.01). The areas under receiver operating characteristic curves for eNO predicting airway inflammation in lung cancer subjects and healthy control subjects was 0.932 (95% confidence interval: 0.904–0.961). In the lung cancer group, the eNO levels in the squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, small‐cell lung cancer and lung carcinoid tumor groups were significantly different ( P   〈  0.01). Lung cancer patients with a predicted FEV 1 % value 〈 80% had a higher level of eNO than the patients with a predicted FEV 1 % value ≥80%. Conclusions The eNO levels in patients with lung cancer were higher than the normal level, especially in the patients with squamous cell carcinoma and small‐cell lung cancer. The differences in eNO among the lung cancer subtypes were statistically significant. Measuring eNO will be helpful in diagnosing airway inflammation in lung cancer and in the classification of lung cancer.

    Kurzfassung: In this work, we utilized adsorbed BSA and multiwalled carbon nanoparticles (BSA/MWCNTs) as a stationary phase in open tubular (OT) capillary for separation of chiral drugs. (3‐Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane was used to assist fabrication of BSA/MWCNTs‐coated OT column by covalent bonding. Incorporation of MWCNTs nanomaterials into a polymer matrix could increase the phase ratio and take advantage of the easy preparation of an open tubular CEC column. SEM was carried out to characterize the BSA/MWCNTs OT columns. The electrochromatographic performance of the OT columns was evaluated by separation of ketoprofen, ibuprofen, uniconazole, and hesperidin. The effects of MWCNTs concentration, background solution pH and concentration, and applied voltage on separation were investigated. Chiral separations of ketoprofen, ibuprofen, uniconazole, and hesperidin were achieved using the BSA/MWCNTs‐coated OT column with resolutions of 24.20, 12.81, 1.50, and 1.85, respectively. Their optimas were found in the 30 mM phosphate buffers at pH 5.0, 6.5, 7.0, and 6.5, respectively. In addition, the columns demonstrated good repeatability and stability with the run‐to‐run, day‐to‐day, and batch‐to‐batch RSDs of migration times less than 3.5%.
