Abstract: Metallic chiral nanoparticles (CNPs) promisingly function as asymmetric catalysts but lack an important study in thermal stability of optical activity that stems from metastable chiral lattices. In this work, annealing is applied to silver (Ag) CNPs, fabricated by glancing angle deposition (GLAD), and causes elimination of optical activity at 200 °C, mainly ascribed to chiral‐to‐achiral lattice transformation. The Ag CNPs are remarkedly enhanced in thermal stability through an alloying with aluminum (Al) via layer‐by‐layer GLAD to generate binary Ag 0.5 Al 0.5 CNPs composed of solid‐state liquids, whose optical activity vanishes at 700 °C. Ease in the diffusion of Al atoms in the host Ag CNPs and thermal insulation from the Al 2 O 3 layers partially covering the binary CNPs effectively prohibit structural relaxation of the metastable chiral lattices, accounting for the significant enhancement in thermal stability of chiral lattices. This is a pioneering work to investigate the fundamental principles determining the thermal stability of metallic CNPs in terms of chiral structures and optical activity. It paves the way toward applying metallic CNPs to asymmetric catalysis at high temperature to accelerate an asymmetric synthesis of enantiomers with designable chirality, which is one of the most important topics in modern chemistry.

Abstract: Ovarian metastasis of gastric cancer indicates that the disease has reached the late stage and the opportunity for radical surgery is restricted. However, the clinical characteristics and prognosis of patients with gastric cancer ovarian metastasis (GCOM) remain to be illustrated. Here, we retrieved the information of 780 GCOM cases from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEERs) database and analyzed their clinicopathological characteristics as well as their survival. According to our data, most GCOM patients showed poor pathological differentiation, advanced T and N stages. The prognostic factors include patients’ age, tumor size, surgical resection, and chemotherapy treatment. Of note, the marriage status was also identified as an independent prognostic factor. Besides the identification of prognostic factors, we established nomograms to help predict the overall survival and cancer-specific survival of GCOM, respectively.

Abstract: To investigate the biocompatibility and differentiation of human brain‐derived neurotrophic factor (hBDNF) gene‐modified bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (hBDNF‐rMSCs) in a functionalized self‐assembling peptide hydrogel. Methods hBDNF was engineered in rMSCs using adenovirus vector and the enhanced green fluorescence protein (eGFP) was used as a reporter gene. Mesenchymal stem cell‐specific surface markers (CD90, CD29, and CD45) were used for identifying rat‐derived MSCs. Fluorescence microscope was used to detect the transfection of rMSCs. hBDNF‐rMSCs and control cells (eGFP‐rMSCs) were seeded in a functional self‐assembling peptide hydrogel (RADA16‐PRG hydrogel) and a control hydrogel (RADA16 hydrogel). Cells were divided into three groups (hBDNF‐rMSCs + RADA16 hydrogel, hBDNF‐rMSCs + RADA16‐PRG hydrogel, and eGFP‐rMSCs + RADA16‐PRG hydrogel) and a control group (eGFP‐rMSCs + RADA16 hydrogel). Cell growth, cell proliferation, expression of hBDNF‐mRNA, the level of hBDNF, neuron‐specific enolase (NSE), and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) protein were analyzed for each group. Results rMSCs were positive for CD90 and CD29 and negative for CD45, green fluorescence was strongly visible at 72 hours after transfection. Compared with control group, the expression of hBDNF‐mRNA and levels of hBDNF protein in both hBDNF group were significantly increased ( P   〈  0.01), the cell growth, cell proliferation, and levels of NSE and GFAP protein were significantly increased in three groups ( P   〈  0.01). Cell growth, cell proliferation, expression of hBDNF‐mRNA, and levels of hBDNF, NSE, and GFAP protein in hBDNF‐rMSCs + RADA16‐PRG hydrogel group were significantly higher than that of hBDNF‐rMSCs + RADA16 hydrogel group ( P   〈  0.01). Conclusion Bone marrow MSCs can be induced into neural cells by the human brain‐derived neurotrophic factor gene in a RADA16‐PRG functionalized self‐assembling peptide hydrogel.

Abstract: Voltage‐gated sodium channels play critical roles in the excitability of the brain. A decreased level of Na v 1.1 has been identified as the cause of severe myoclonic epilepsy in infancy. In the present study, we identified the transcription start site and three 5′‐untranslated exons of SCN1A by using 5′‐full RACE. The 2.5‐kb region upstream of the transcription start site was targeted as a potential location of the promoter. The 2.5‐kb genomic fragment (P 2.5 , from +26 to –2,500) and the 2.7‐kb fragment (P 2.7 , P 2.5 combined with the 227‐bp 5′‐untranslated exons) were cloned to produce luciferase constructs. The P 2.5 and the P 2.7 drove luciferase gene expression in the human neuroblastoma cell line SH‐SY5Y but not in the human embryonic kidney cell line HEK‐293. The 5′‐untranslated exons could greatly enhance gene expression in SH‐SY5Y cells. The P 2.7 could be used as a functional unit to study the role of SCN1A noncoding sequences in gene expression. These findings will also help in exploring the possibility of promoter mutant‐induced diseases and revealing the mechanism underlying the regulation of SCN1A expression in the normal brain. © 2008 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.

Abstract: To explore the hemostatic effect of intra‐articular administration of tranexamic acid (TXA) combined with knee flexion in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Methods This randomized controlled trial was conducted at the Third Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University (Guangzhou, China) from January 2017 to February 2018. The patients were randomized 1:1 to the TXA group (TXA 500 mg into the joint after closure, knee, and hip flexed at 45° for 4 h) or the control group (physiological saline, with limb fully extended). The primary endpoint was postoperative hemoglobin reduction. The postoperative levels of hemoglobin were measured at four time points: 6 h after operation, and on the first, second, and third postoperative days. Calculated blood loss (CBL) at 3 days, transfusion rate, range of motion (ROM), VAS pain score, and knee circumference increment were the secondary endpoints. Ninety‐four (47/group) patients were analyzed. Results Postoperatively, there were statistically significant differences between the TXA and control groups in CBL (791 ± 212 mL vs 1175 ± 273 mL, P 〈  0.05). Hemoglobin reduction was significantly lower in the TXA group (2.0 ± 0.9 g/dL vs 4.5 ± 0.7 g/dL, P 〈  0.05). Based on the transfusion criteria, 3 out of 47 (6.4%) patients in the TXA group and 13 out of 47 (27.6%) patients in the control group received blood transfusions ( P = 0.006). ROM (90.8° ± 6.2° vs 87.6° ± 6.4°, P = 0.004), VAS pain score (4.1 ± 1.1 vs 4.8 ± 1.3, P = 0.004), and KCI (2.4 ± 0.9 cm vs 3.2 ± 1.0 cm, P = 0.01) were better in the TXA group compared with thecontrols. There was no deep venous thrombosis (DVT), wound infection or other adverse events in either group. In the control group, 2 patients had a fever after blood transfusion. Conclusion Intra‐articular injection of TXA combined with knee and hip flexion at 45° can effectively attenuate CBL and hemoglobin reduction during primary TKA, without an additional adverse event.

Abstract: Although the physiological and molecular responses of Citrus to Al-toxicity or low pH have been examined in some details, little information is available on Citrus responses to pH and aluminum (Al) interactions. Citrus sinensis seedlings were irrigated for 18 weeks with nutrient solution at a concentration of 0 or 1 mM AlCl 3 •6H 2 O and a pH of 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, or 4.0. Thereafter, biomass, root, stem, and leaf concentrations of Al and nutrients, leaf gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence (OJIP) transients, and related parameters were investigated to understand the physiological mechanisms underlying the elevated pH-induced alleviation of Citrus toxicity. Increasing the nutrient solution pH from 2.5 to 4.0 alleviated the Al-toxic effects on biomass, photosynthesis, OJIP transients and related parameters, and element concentrations, uptake, and distributions. In addition, low pH effects on the above physiological parameters were intensified by Al-toxicity. Evidently, a synergism existed between low pH and Al-toxicity. Increasing pH decreased Al uptake per root dry weight and its concentration in roots, stems, and leaves and increased nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, and boron uptake per plant and their concentrations in roots, stems, and leaves. This might be responsible for the elevated pH-induced alleviation of growth inhibition and the impairment of the whole photosynthetic electron transport chain, thus preventing the decrease of CO 2 assimilation.

Abstract: Studies investigating the association between early sexual debut and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection have mainly focused on Africans or females but rarely on men who have sex with men (MSM) in China. This study, therefore, mainly aimed at exploring the association between early sexual debut and HIV infection among MSM in Shenzhen, China. A total of 533 MSM were enrolled in this study using a convenience sampling method. Information about sociodemographic characteristics and risky sexual behaviors was collected. It was found that the prevalence of HIV infection was 24.2% among this study population and 66.4% of the MSM reported having had vaginal sexual intercourse with females. The mean ages at first vaginal sexual intercourse, first anal sexual intercourse, and first sexual intercourse were 21.38, 22.43, and 19.87 years, respectively. Multivariable logistic regression analyses showed that the MSM who experienced early anal sexual debut were more likely to be infected with HIV than those who did not. The results indicate that HIV infection is quite prevalent among MSM in Shenzhen. Early and efficient intervention strategies should be taken, and the MSM experiencing early anal sexual debut should be given special attention.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to investigate the outcomes of surgical resection of carotid body tumors with and without preoperative embolization. Methods There were 31 patients who underwent surgical resection combined with preoperative embolization (SRE group), and 27 patients who underwent conventional surgical resection (SR group); all clinical data were included and reviewed. Results There was no difference in the approach for carotid reconstruction in either group ( P 〉 .05). The mean surgical time (110.65 ± 35.77 minutes vs 188.33 ± 66.44 minutes) and intraoperative blood loss (140.32 ± 57.12 mL vs 396.43 ± 272.82 mL) were significantly less in the SRE group ( P 〈 .05). The volume of blood transfusions required (475 ± 301.18 mL vs 0 mL) and incidence rate of total complications (33.3% vs 9.7%) were higher in the SR group ( P 〈 .05). However, the length of hospital stay was similar in both groups ( P 〉 .05). Conclusion Our results demonstrate that preoperative embolization of a carotid body tumor can reduce blood loss and complications and improve tumor excision.

Abstract: Salmonella typhi is responsible for typhoid fever, which is a serious health threat in developing countries. As a virulent factor of Salmonella typhi , the purified Vi polysaccharide (Vi PS) has become an effective vaccine to combat typhoid fever. The chemical synthesis can provide homogeneous and well‐defined molecules for the development of Vi‐based vaccines. However, the synthesis of Vi oligosaccharides in high yields and with exclusive α‐stereoselectivities remains very challenging. In this paper, a series of Vi pseudooligosaccharides, including pseudo tetra‐, hexa‐, and octa‐saccharides were efficiently synthesized. These oligosaccharide analogues were conjugated by carbon chain tether through olefin cross metathesis or by the 1,2,3‐triazole moiety through copper (I)‐catalyzed alkyne–azide cycloaddition reaction (CuAAC). The binding affinities of these oligosaccharide mimics to anti ‐Vi antibodies were investigated. These results will be beneficial to the further development of Vi‐based oligosaccharide vaccines.
