Abstract:
There remain some discrepancies about the neural dissociation between taxonomic and thematic relationships. We further explored this issue while controlling for perceptual or functional features of artifacts, in which perceptual relationship (axe–helve), functional relationship (axe–wood), perceptual classification (axe–hammer), and functional classification (axe–saw) were compared in the semantic priming paradigm. The main finding was that frontal negativity was a useful index for the dissociation of taxonomic and thematic relations, and the organization of object knowledge is primarily fuelled by feature processing, with taxonomic, or thematic, relationships further embedded with such sensory, or functional, features.
