Abstract: Agriculture and modern biotechnology are increasingly becoming interdependent, and many new techniques have brought new opportunities for enhancing production and marketing. Germplasm storage is an alternative for the conservation of plant genetic diversity, contributing to the improvement and maintenance of propagation programs for species of interest. In this work, banana corms were collected as plant material from relatively young commercial plantations of three different cultivars: ‘Williams’, Valery (AAA genome; Cavendish subgroup), and ‘Barraganete’ (AAB genome; Plantain subgroup). Their shoot tips were introduced into in vitro conditions, and subcultured monthly to obtain the required number of shoots. The shoots were subsequently rooted and stimulated to invigoration in order to extract apical meristems (0.8–1.0 mm), which were prepared for cryopreservion in liquid nitrogen (−196 °C) following pre-conditioning in PVS2 vitrification solution. Thereafter, the explants were rapidly thawed and then recovered and regenerated using two different methods – by Panis (2009) and Korneva et al. (2009) – consisting of two different sets of recovery and subsequent regeneration media. Statistical analysis of the results showed that the banana cultivar ‘Williams’ demonstrated higher survival and regeneration rates after cry-opreservation using the Korneva method, whereas in cultivars ‘Valery’ and ‘Barraganete’, there were no significant differences between the tested methods. The ‘Barraganete’ cultivar had the lowest survival and regeneration rates, regardless of the applied method.

Abstract: The current crisis in the supply of traditional energies, the rising trend of the price of fossil fuels, the degradation of the environment, the effects of climate change and the geopolitical reazons have set the promotion of alternative energies, among which agrofuels stand out, as a priority for international and national policies. They represent a potential source of energy, but it is necessary to debate and carefully evaluate the economic, environmental and social effects before undertaking large-scale programs. This article exposes the main edges of the political-economic, scientific-technological and ethical debate, arising from the global controversy generated by the boom in the production and use of agrofuels, which took place at the beginning of the world crisis that reached public repercussion from August 2007. Although the international debate had its apogee between 2007 and 2008, it is a controversy that has spread over time to the present, but with a lower profile.

Abstract: Simvastatin is a widely used drug for dyslipidemia treatment, and the best therapeutic effects are achieved at night time. Simvastatin administration has been associated with the development of myopathy. Some polymorphisms in genes that are involved in the metabolism and transport of simvastatin seem to have an important role in the development of simvastatin-associated myopathy. The administration of 40 mg of simvastatin to 19 hyperlipidemic subjects with regular sleep rhythms (RR) and shift workers (SW) with predominant evening rhythms and sleep-wake disturbances, uncovered two SW volunteers who developed myopathy. Case presentation We report two SWs who developed simvastatin-dependent myopathy after three weeks of treatment. The SLCO1B1 521T 〉 C major risk allele was observed in one myopathy-affected and one unaffected subjects, the second affected patient shared polymorphisms with the unaffected subjects. Conclusions The lack of consonance in the studied genotypes between SWs affected with simvastatin-associated myopathy can be related to circadian misalignment. Hence, other genes with circadian behavior and induced by simvastatin should be evaluated in future studies.

Abstract: The Doppler effect has allowed the characterization of several vessels in maternal-fetal circulation that have been used for practical purposes. Our review of the literature showed a paucity of information about fetal pulmonary artery pressure (FMPAP) and its behavior in regard to gestational age (GA). The objectives of the study were to evaluate a formula to calculate the main FMPAP and its correlation with GA. Methods A total of 337 fetuses without obvious pathology were studied prospectively using Doppler evaluation of the FMPAP. Using the fetal main pulmonary artery Doppler acceleration time (FMPAT), we obtained the FMPAP using the following formula: FMPAP=90 – (0.62×FMPAT). Regression analyses, Pearson’s bivariate correlation and paired sample t -test were used when appropriate. Results FMPAT increases while FMPAP decreases with GA. Pearson’s correlation coefficient for FMPAP and GA was −0.544 (P-value 〈 0.001) and for FMPAT and GA was 0.556 (P-value 〈 0.001). FMPAP and FMPAT were highly correlated (R=−0.972; P 〈 0.001). Conclusion Pulmonary artery pressure in the fetus decreases with GA.
