Abstract: The aim of this study was to analyse changes in the health status of ash stands belonging to the age classes VI and VIII growing in optimal site conditions and to compare the ash dieback with other age classes in the Jesionowe Góry Nature Reserve. Our research was conducted during the growing season in 2006 and 2007 on 22 permanent and 54 temporary sample plots. The health condition of the stands and the structure of natural regeneration were determined with a one-year interval. The amount of damage was defined using leaf loss, pest infestation and shoot dieback. Based on our estimation of natural regeneration, the capability for stand evolution in the future was determined.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper was to review literature covering the topic of site index with particular emphasis on Scots pine, the most important forest-forming species in Poland. We discuss the history of the site index, research on various tree species, statistical modelling methods, the spatial application of site index and age impact assessment. The history of research on the site index of forest species is long and dates back to the 18th century. Many researchers thought that determining the quality of the habitat is very important from the point of view of rational forest management. The site index, as a measure of the potential of the habitat on which the forest grows, is one of the most important characteristics of forest stands. The site index depends on the selected model, but is most often expressed as the average or top height of trees of a given species at a certain age. In our review, we point out several insufficiencies of studies on the site index, external influences and the connection of the site index with spatial conditions. Furthermore, research conducted so far has not explicitly confirmed that there is a relationship between the site index of pine stands and their geographical location in Poland. More research on the site index, especially in regard with climate change, is needed.

Abstract: The rapid growth of modern services industry in Poland, observed in the past few years, has been substantially determined by the vast talent pool of well-qualified and cost-efficient workers. The intensive expansion of the industry has been aligned with widely implemented policies of personal development and leadership, aimed to grow and prepare internal human resources for more challenging roles in newly established projects and teams. The paper presents the results of empirical research examining the perception of those schemes and policies, from the perspective of workers employed in the polish offshore service delivery centers.

Abstract: The effect of aminoguanidine (AG) on the malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in erythrocytes of rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes was studied. Induction of diabetes resulted in an increase of MDA concentration and decreases of SOD and catalase activities after 6 and 12 weeks. GSH-Px activity increased after 6 weeks and returned to control values after 12 weeks. AG administration did not affect body weight, blood glucose level and HbA 1c content in diabetic rats but led to a decrease of MDA concentration and SOD and catalase activities after 12 weeks of treatment, with no significant effect after 6 weeks. AG attenuated the GSH-Px increase after 6 weeks but augmented the activity of this enzyme after 12 weeks. These results confirm the presence of oxidative stress in streptozotocin-induced experimental diabetes and point to the beneficial antioxidant effect of AG.
