    Abstract: Sugar beet is recalcitrant to in vitro tissue culture. Usually, proliferation of in vitro cultured rosette explants is a prerequisite for micropropagation. Although hormonal treatments can induce proliferation in sugar beet rosette explants, they may also result in some side effects. In vitro culture of sugar beet explants and some hormonal treatments make them more prone to hyperhydricity. Effects of media with different concentrations of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and kinetin (Kin) on the proliferation and hyperhydricity of haploid sugar beet explants were investigated. It was observed that 0.2 mg L -1 Kin, with a reasonable amount of proliferation and minimum rate of hyperhydricity, performed better than BAP in different concentrations and combinations. The effect sizes of the treatments on the dependent variables were large. The correlation between proliferation and hyperhydricity of the treated explants was statistically negative and the association was large. However, the hormonal treatments without BAP or with the lowest amount of it produced the highest proliferation rate with the least hyperhydricity. The coefficient of determination was R 2 quadratic = 0.885. The results suggest that, in comparison with BAP, Kin is a potent plant growth regulator for the proliferation of sugar beet haploid explants that causes the least hyperhydricity. Although explants proliferated better in the presence of 0.01 mg L -1 BAP in combination with Kin than under Kin alone, the hyperhydricity of the proliferated explants decreased their suitability for in vitro propagation.

    Abstract: Liquid condensates collected during drying of lumber, sawdust or wood powder are usually discarded. The objective of this study was to investigate the potential utilization of such condensates from oak, beech and walnut, focusing on those obtained in a 7.8 MHz vacuum dryer. The condensate was replaced with the deionized water (5%) in the production of urea-formaldehyde (UF) and melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resins in the reactor. The technical properties of the resins and chemical properties of the liquid condensates were determined. Particleboards (PB) and middle density fiberboards (MDF) were produced from the control and modified resins. The technical properties of both modified resins were between the limit values of commercial UF and MUF resins used in the wood-based panel industry. The formaldehyde (F) emission from PB and MDF decreased significantly by incorporation of the condensates into the UF and MUF resins.

    Abstract: A closed-type water source heat pump dryer integrated with a drying programme (DP) was designed and tested. The DP was developed using psychometric conditions of desired drying air and thermodynamic balance of heat pump. A drying algorithm was developed according to the technical specification of the dryer. Drying air temperature, relative humidity and drying air volumetric flow rate were entered from a programmable logic controller (PLC) screen. In this study, the drying of mint leaves was examined. Mint leaves were dried at different temperatures (35°C, 40°C and 45°C) and at different volumetric flow rates 300 m 3 /h for a velocity of 0.75 m/s and 600 m 3 /h for a velocity of 1.5 m/s in the PLC-controlled heat pump dryer. The relative humidity of the drying air entering the dryer chamber was kept between 13.88% and 6.81% and the two air dampers were controlled according to predetermined value. The coefficient of performance ( $$\rm CO{\rm P_{{\rm{hp}}}}$$ ) values obtained were between 3.81 and 2.29. The specific moisture extraction rate for the whole system ( $$\rm SME{\rm R_{{\rm{ws}}}}$$ ) was between the 0.034 and 0.044 kg/kWh. The drying air temperatures were controlled with an accuracy of ±0.41°C to ±0.76°C depending on the mode of operation.
