Abstract: Ohtahara syndrome is one of the earliest and most severe forms of developmental and epileptic encephalopathy. Over the last decade, the rapid advances in molecular techniques, especially in high-throughput sequencing (HTS), have revealed that a majority of Ohtahara patients have genetic etiology. About 20 genes have been found to be related to this syndrome so far, and Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technique is now an important genetic test for this syndrome. This study was conducted on 4 patients with Ohtahara syndrome referred to Children’s Hospital 2, Ho Chi Minh City. Whole-exome sequencing (WES) following targeted analysis on 283 epileptic encephalopathy–related genes was performed to identify disease-causing variants of the patients. Following multi-step bioinformatics analysis, trio-based Sanger sequencing confirmation, and variant classification according to standards of The American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics – 2015, we have identified 2 pathogenic mutations in 2 patients: OH3 (KCNQ2, c.868G 〉 A, p.G290S) and OH4 (SCN2A, c.788C 〉 T, p.A263V). The results of this study contribute to verifying the role of genetic factors in Ohtahara syndrome in Vietnamese patients. This study also confirms that NGS in general and WES, in particular, are reliable and useful in detecting genetic causes of Ohtahara syndrome, thereby, assisting in diagnosis and treatment of this syndrome.

Abstract: Nuclear factor-Y (NF-Y) transcription factor can be found in most of plant species and is known to play important role in plant growth, development and stress response. In this study, 17 genes encoding NF-YB subunit were identified in cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz). These genes were located in chromosomes with an uneven ratio. Analysis of gene structure indicated that MeNF-YB genes were varied in length and exon/intron organization. Genes in the same clade shared similar exon/intron structure. Based on available microarray database, most of NF-YB genes were up-regulated in at least 1 major tissue. Interestingly, MeNF-YB12 was highly expressed in shoot apical meristem, while MeNF-YB2 was specifically accumulated in friable embryogenesis callus. Additionally, some genes, such as MeNF-YB4/8/13/5 were found to be strongly expressed in friable embryogenesis callus. Our results strongly indicated that NF-YB genes in cassava might be associated with various growth and developmental processes in meristem tissues.

Abstract: The diversity of medicinal plants in Vietnam is a rich source to develop novel health products. This study evaluated the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of ethanolic extracts of Pluchea indica, Drynaria fortunei, Stephania glabra, lemongrass and lime mixture, and ginger and kumquat mixture. The extract of ginger and kumquat mixture showed the highest percentage of free radical scavenging (85% at the concentration of 0.1 mg/ml), following by the extract of P. indica leaves and stem (60%). The plant extracts displayed antibacterial activity against Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus at different levels in the agar well diffusion assay. The extract of S. glabra inhibited the growth of all bacterial strains. The mean of inhibition zone diameter, produced by S. glabra extract, was similar to or even significantly higher than that of control at particular concentrations.

Abstract: Abstract: This paper aims to determine the rate of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene mutations in advanced and metastatic squamous cell lung cancer in Vietnamese patients. EGFR mutation testing was performed on 559 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue samples from advanced and metastatic squamous cell lung cancer patients by real-time PCR. The results showed that EGFR mutations were found in 8.4%. Most of them were exon 19 deletions, approximately 51.1%. Multivariate analysis showed that EGFR mutations were more prevalent in gender (p 〈 0.0001). In conclusion, EGFR mutation testing should be performed in patients with squamous cell lung cancer. Keywords: Lung squamous cell carcinoma, EGFR gene.

Abstract: Four flame retardant DOPO derivatives were succesfully synthesized by Pudovik reaction, including 6,6'-(([1,1'-biphenyl]-4,4'-diylbis(azanediyl))bis (thiophen-2-ylmethylene))bis(dibenzo[c,e] [1,2]oxaphosphinine 6-oxide) 5a, 6,6'-(((sulfonylbis(4,1-phenylene))bis(azanediyl)) bis(thiophen-2-ylmethylene))bis(dibenzo[c,e] [1,2]oxaphosphinine 6-oxide) 5b, 6,6'-((1,4-phenylenebis(azanediyl))bis(furan-2ylmethylene))bis(dibenzo[c,e] [1,2]oxaphosphinine 6-oxide) 5c and 6,6'-((oxybis(4,1-phenylene))bis(1-(thiophen-2-yl)ethane-2,1-diyl))bis(dibenzo[c,e] [1,2]oxaphosphinine 6-oxide) 5d. Among them, flame retardants 5a and 5d were synthesized for the first time. DOPO derivatives were combined with functionalized ammonium polyphosphate using polyethyleneimine (PEI-APP) as flame retardant systems for epoxy composites. The combination of compound 5a and PEI-APP gave the materials with the best flame retardancy. 6wt% of PEI-APP/6% of 5a promoted the composite material to V-0 rating in UL-94 vertical burning test and the limiting oxygen index reached 28.9%. The impact of flame retardants towards the mechanical and physical properties of epoxy resin was also evaluated. The combination of 5a with PEI-APP showed the least decrease in mechanical strength of epoxy composite.

Abstract: The resistive switching memory device based on nanocomposites has become a potential candidate in the data storage field. Understanding resistive switching characteristics and electrical conduction mechanisms may support the appropriate way to fabricate and control the operation of a device. In this study, a capacitor-like structure using PVA-ZnO as an insulator layer was fabricated by a solution method. The crystalline structure, morphology, and absorption spectrum of ZnO nanoparticles were revealed respectively. The resistive switching effect was observed with the ON/OFF ratio of 0.5´102, high endurance, excellent retention and the electrical transport mechanisms were followed by the SCLC and Ohmic’s law in the low resistance state and Flower- Nordheim tunneling in the high resistance state. The resistive switching mechanism was contributed by the oxygen vacancies in ZnO nanoparticles and the oxygen ions in the bottom electrode.

Abstract: In this study, homogeneous titanate tubular (TNT) and diatom/TNT composites (D/TNT) were prepared by a facile hydrothermal method. The crystalline structure and morphology of the synthesised samples were studied by X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Furthermore, the photocatalytic activity for degradation of methylene blue (MB) was investigated under sunlight irradiation. The results showed that the MB degradation by D/TNT was higher than bare TNT. Optical properties of the synthesized materials with enhanced photocatalytic activity could be explained through both UV-vis diffuse absorption and photoluminescence emission measurement. These results indicated that there was bandgap narrowing and longer carrier lifetime in the composite sample.
