Abstract: Multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) in the presence of missing data is usually performed by removing the records that have missing or not available (NA) data; sometimes, an entire row or column of a data matrix is removed, which is not ideal because relevant information on an individual or variable of the study is lost. In some cases, it is assumed that the missing data are a category of the qualitative variable, resulting in a greater variance dispersion in the new axes. Possible solutions to this problem can be the imputation of the missing data or using an algorithm suited to the presence of this type of data. This work is focused on performing the MCA method in the presence of missing data, without using imputation techniques, by using the available data principle of the nonlinear estimation by iterative partial least squares (NIPALS) algorithm [25].

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to apply a new approach to identify natural fractures in wells in a hydrocarbon reservoir using resistive image logs, fractal dimension and support vector machines (SVMs). The stratigraphic sequence investigated by each well is composed of Cretaceous calcareous rocks from the Catatumbo Basin, Colombia. The box counting method was applied to image logs in order to generate a curve representing variations of fractal dimension in these images throughout each well. The arithmetic mean of fractal dimension showed values ranging from 1,70 to 1,72 at the mineralized fracture intervals, and from 1,72 to 1,76 at the open fracture intervals. Morphological classification between open and mineralized natural fractures is performed using corelogs integration in a pilot well. Fractal dimension of images along with gamma rays and resistivity logs were employed as the input dataset of a SVM model identifying intervals with natural open fractures automatically, shortly after logs acquisition and previous to its interpretation by specialists. Although final results were affected by borehole conditions and logs quality, the SVM model showedaccuracy between 72,3% and 82,2% in 5 wells evaluated in the studied field.

Abstract: The Cunas mine is currently one of the major producers of fine emeralds in Colombia; its emeralds typically display a magnificent green hue, which is highly appreciated in the world market. The mineralization is found in vanadium-rich black shales of the Muzo formation; emeralds occur in pockets within hydrothermal veins and breccias, consisting mostly of calcite, dolomite, albite, quartz, and minor pyrite, parisite-(Ce), and fluorite; hydrothermal alteration is pervasive and dominated by albitization and carbonatization. Emerald-hosted fluid inclusions are highly abundant and remarkably large and complex. Poly-phase inclusions are ubiquitous, occur both in emeralds and gangue minerals, and consist of two daughter crystals (typically halite and calcite or siderite; exceptionally parisite-(Ce)), a liquid brine, a CO2-N2-CH4-rich gas bubble, and occasionally minor liquid CO2. Vapor-rich inclusions were observed in quartz, and two-phase inclusions were identified in calcite and dolomite, thus suggesting a complex fluid evolution. Microthermometry analysis indicates the emerald-forming fluids were trapped at relatively low temperature ≈ 260-340°C and pressure ≈ 875-2400 kbar, with relatively high density —1.03 g/cm³—, and elevated salinity 39% NaCl eq. Wt.; other aqueous components detected include CaCl2, KCl, and FeCl2. Based on these data, we propose the emerald mineralization at the Cunas mine was originated by the mixing of two hydrothermal fluids of different sources; one fluid with high salinity derived from evaporite dissolution, responsible for the albitization of the host rocks; the second is a calcium-rich fluid evolved from connate waters, which was equilibrated by the interaction with calcareous and organic-rich wall rocks. As a result, emerald mineralization took place at structurally favorable sites where fluid mixing was promoted. The described geological and physicochemical features for the Cunas mine, are in agreement with an epigenetic sediment-hosted mineralization —Colombian-type— formed by the circulation and mixing of relatively low-temperature non-magmatic fluids.

Abstract: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, which generally affects people over 65 years old. Some genetic mutations induce early onset of AD and help to track the evolution of the symptoms and the physiological changes at different stages of the disease. In Colombia there is a large family group with the PSEN1 E280A mutation with a median age of 46,8 years old for onset of symptoms. AD has been defined as a disconnection syndrome; consequently, network approaches could help to capture different features of the disease. The aim of the current work is to identify a biomarker in AD that helps in the tracking of the neurodegenerative process. Electroencephalography (EEG) was recorded during the encoding of visual information for four groups of individuals: asymptomatic and mild cognitive impairment carriers of the PSEN1 E280A mutation, and two non-carrier control groups. For each individual, the effective connectivity was estimated using the direct Directed Transfer Function and three measurements from graph theory were extracted: input strength, output strength and total strength. A relation between the cognitive status and age of the participants with the connectivity features was calculated. For those connectivity measures in which there is a relation with the age or the clinical scale, the performance as a diagnostic feature was evaluated. We found that output strength connectivity in the right occipito-parietal region is related to age of the carrier groups (r=−0,54, p=0,0036) and has a high sensitivity and high specificity to distinguish between carriers and non-carriers (67% sensitivity and 80% specificity in asymptomatic cases, and 83% sensitivity and 67% specificity in symptomatic cases). This relationship indicates that output strength connectivity could be related to the neurodegenerative process of the disease and could help to track the conversion from the asymptomatic stage to dementia.
