Kurzfassung: A major concern affecting the efficient use of carbon fibre reinforced composite laminates in the aerospace industry is the low velocity impact damage which may be introduced accidentally during manufacture, operation or maintenance of the composite structures. It is widely reported that the contact behavior of composite laminates under low-velocity impact can be obtained under quasi-static loading conditions. This paper focuses on the study of the correlation of the dent depth to the maximum contact force and damage of composite laminates under quasi-static loading. Analytical and finite element simulation approaches were employed to investigate relations between the contact force and the dent depth. Experimental investigations on the correlation between dent depth, maximum contact force and damage include quasi-static indentation testing, optical and scanning electron microscopic examination of the damage under different loading levels. The effect of damage initiation and growth on the contact behaviour has been discussed. Results show that consistent correlations between the dent depth, maximum contact force and damage exist and can be predicted with the analytical and numerical approaches. Dent depth can be used as an engineering parameter in assessing the severity of damage for composite structures that are subjected to low-velocity impact. This may lead to the development of a cost-effective technique for the inspection and maintenance of composite structures in aerospace applications.

Kurzfassung: A viable solution to the ever-demanding weight-saving target in aerospace industry is the replacement of conventional engineering alloys with composite materials in primary structures. A major concern to the effective use of composite laminates is the substantial reduction in the compressive strength when the contact force has exceeded the delamination threshold load (DTL). This paper focuses on the study of the contact behavior of composite laminates under quasi-static indentation (QSI) forces. The effect of damage initiation and growth on contact behavior has been investigated via detailed assessment of the relation between the indentation force and the dent depth. Different phases corresponding to undamaged, local damage, global damage, and final failure of the laminate have been identified. A modification to the classical Hertz contact law has been proposed to account for the matrix material resistance to plastic deformation.

Kurzfassung: The study was carried out in order to evaluate the effect of the pulsed electric current (PEC) treatment on the corrosion as well as on static strength of Polish reinforcing steel. As-received St3SX was used for investigations. Two kinds of specimens were manufactured by turning from 20 mm diameter re-bars: cylinders of 10 mm diameter and 28 mm length for corrosion tests and standard cylindrical specimens of 6 mm diameter and 30 mm length for static tension tests. Corrosion tests was performed according to the ASTM B117-97 standard. As-received steel tensile specimens and the specimens after PEC treatment were tested using a servo-hydraulic universal testing machine at the strain rate of 10 -2 s -1 .
