Abstract: This study focuses on the educational significance of the Maeul community meetings as a learning apparatus for developing residents' competencies since one of the important tasks of community building is to form the residents as the subjects of the community. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to analyze what kind of learning experiences residents have through Maeul community meetings and which elements of community meetings facilitate learning experiences. In order to achieve the purpose, a qualitative study was conducted on the experience of residents participating in community meetings, focusing on the case of Bok Mom, the Maeul community participating in the Daejeon community building project. As a result of the study, residents participating in Maeul community meetings strengthened the attitude of equal respect for each other, improved their ability to communicate reasonably, expanded their subjectivity leading the community, and formed and developed a public mindset that considers more about us than myself. In addition, it was confirmed that this learning experience can be strengthened based on elements of community meetings, such as democratic conference forms that grow as equal subjects, meeting contents and decision-making structures that grow publicity, ‘sharing updates' to help learning to respect and communicate with each other, and facilitator roles that support growth beyond meetings. In the end, this study is meaningful in that it concretely proves the learning effect of Maeul community meetings, and reveals that Maeul community meetings are an important site for resident education to develop residents into the active subject of community building.
