    Abstract: Unintended pregnancies (UIP) among unmarried sexually active college students in mainland China have emerged as a major reproductive health issue with detrimental personal and socioeconomic consequences. This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with UIP among sexually active undergraduates in mainland China. Methods Between September 8, 2019 and January 17, 2020, a total of 48,660 participants were recruited across the Chinese mainland to complete the self-administered, structured, online questionnaire. This analysis was restricted to 6347 sexually experienced, never-married 15–26 year old undergraduates. Pearson’s Chi square tests and multivariate Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify sociodemographic, familial and individual variables associated with UIP. Results The overall prevalence of UIP was 17.7%. More specifically, 19.5% of male college students reported they had unintentionally gotten a partner pregnant, while 14.9% of female college students became unintentionally pregnant. Students who experienced UIP were more likely to belong to the older age group (23–26 years), live with only one parent or live without parents at home, report that their family members approve of premarital sex, initiate sexual activity younger than 14 years old and have casual sex partners. Furthermore, females with multiple partners and males who came from low- income households, experienced sexual abuse, perceived difficulties in acquiring condoms and did not know how to use condoms correctly were also at higher risk of experiencing an unintended pregnancy. Conclusion In order to prevent UIP, a comprehensive intervention measure should be taken to target older students and those engaging in risky sexual behaviors, work with young male students to improve condom use skills, improve the availability of free condoms, optimize the involvement of parents and other family members in their children’s sex education.

    Abstract: The non-HDL-cholesterol to HDL-cholesterol (NHDLC/HDLC) ratio is closely related to a variety of dyslipidemia-related diseases. This study examined the relationship between the NHDLC/HDLC ratio and non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFLD) in children and adolescents. Methods This cross-sectional survey included a total of 7759 eligible Chinese children and adolescents (5692 boys and 2067 girls) who received routine medical examinations. The anthropometric and laboratory data of the subjects were collected. NAFLD was diagnosed by liver ultrasonography. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed on the NHDLC/HDLC ratio, NHDLC, HDLC and NAFLD. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was used to compare the diagnostic significance of the above parameters for NAFLD. Results The total prevalence of NAFLD was 4.36%, and the prevalence in boys was higher than that in girls (5.61% vs. 1.9%, P   〈  0.001). The prevalence of NAFLD was positively correlated with the NHDLC/HDLC ratio ( P   〈  0.001). The binary logistic regression analysis demonstrated that the OR was 8.61 (95% CI, 5.90–12.57, P   〈  0.001) in tertile 3 (highest NHDLC/HDLC ratio) compared with tertile 1 (lowest NHDLC/HDLC ratio). After adjustment for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), uric acid (UA), total bilirubin (TB), fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), the OR for tertile 3 (OR = 1.83, 95% CI, 1.04–3.22, P  = 0.035) was still significantly higher than that of tertile 1. The area under the curve (AUC) of the NHDLC/HDLC ratio of boys was 0.787, which was significantly greater than NHDLC and HDLC (0.719 and 0.726, P   〈  0.001). For girls, the AUC of the NHDLC/HDLC ratio was 0.763, which was also significantly greater than NHDLC (0.661, P   〈  0.001). The cutoff point of the NHDLC/HDLC ratio was 2.475 in boys and 2.695 in girls. In addition, the AUC of the NHDLC/HDLC ratio was 0.761 in subjects with normal ALT levels (ALT ≤40 U/L), which was significantly higher than NHDLC (0.680, P   〈  0.001) and HDLC (0.724, P  = 0.007). For subjects with elevated ALT levels (ALT 〉  40 U/L), the AUC of the NHDLC/HDLC ratio (0.746) was also significantly greater than NHDLC (0.646, P   〈  0.001). Conclusions The NHDLC/HDLC ratio was positively correlated with NAFLD in Chinese children and adolescents. It may serve as an effective indicator to help identify NAFLD in children and adolescents.

    Abstract: The existing cell surface markers used for sorting glioma stem cells (GSCs) have obvious limitations, such as vulnerability to the enzymatic digestion and time-consuming labeling procedure. Reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) as a cellular metabolite with property of autofluorescence has the potential to be used as a new biomarker for sorting GSCs. Methods A method for sorting GSCs was established according to the properties of the autofluorescence of NADH. Then, the NADH high and NADH low subpopulations were sorted. The stem-like properties of the subpopulations were evaluated by qRT-PCR, western blot analyses, limiting dilution assay, cell viability assay, bioluminescence imaging, and immunofluorescence analysis in vitro and in vivo. The relationship between CD133 + /CD15 + cells and NADH high subpopulation was also assessed. Results NADH high cells expressed higher stem-related genes, formed more tumor spheres, and harbored stronger pluripotency in vitro and higher tumorigenicity in vivo, compared to NADH low subpopulation. NADH high glioma cells had the similar stemness with CD133 + or CD15 + GSCs, but the three subpopulations less overlaid each other. Also, NADH high glioma cells were more invasive and more resistant to chemotherapeutic drug temozolomide (TMZ) than NADH low cells. In addition, the autofluorescence of NADH might be an appropriate marker to sort cancer stem cells (CSCs) in other cancer types, such as breast and colon cancer. Conclusion Our findings demonstrate that intracellular autofluorescence of NADH is a non-labeling, sensitive maker for isolating GSCs, even for other CSCs.
