Abstract:
Only the interaction of wires and catheters made endovascular therapy possible and the correct wire with its special features, depending on the vascular area, can lead to success. Therefore, it is important to know and understand the features of the wires used. Wires are principally divided into three groups (access, workhorse, and support or delivery wires). Basic features of a wire are its length, diameter, stiffness, coating, tip configuration, torsional stability and tip load. There is no single wire that can be used for all areas. Aortic treatments in the thoracic region require ultra-stiff 0.035″ wires that are at least 260 cm long. Tip load, tip configuration, and torsional stability are of secondary importance, whereas in the case of recanalization wires for chronic total occlusion of the lower leg, it is precisely these that are important for success.
