    Notes: Abstract The metal complexing properties of two antihypertensive drugs, hydralazine (1-hydrazinophthalazine) and prizidilol (a hydrazinopyridazine), and some related ligands, have been studied using potentiometry, elemental analysis, spectrophotometry and computer simulation. The coordination chemistry of 1-hydrazinophthalazine and the hydrazinopyridazines is similar in that Ca(II), Mg(II), and Mn(II) complexes are not formed, whereas Zn(II), Cu(II) and Fe(II)/Fe(III) complexes are produced. Both kinds of ligand react with Fe(II) to form a brightly coloured tetrazene complex which is insoluble for hydralazine but soluble for prizidilol. Computer simulation studies indicate that the most prevalent metal complex of prizidilol in blood plasma is [Fe2+(Priz−H+]2+ but that this only forms at very high drug concentrations. It is concluded that prizidilol is unlikely to have any direct effects on the metabolism or distribution of the trace elements listed here.

    Notes: Abstract Formation constants for the cadmium(II), nickel(II) and lead(II) complexes ofdl-NN′-dicarboxamidomethyl-NN′-dicarboxymethyl-1,2-diaminopropane (ICRF 198) and the 1,2-diaminobutane homologue (ICRF 226) have been measured potentiometrically at 37°C andI=150 mmol dm−3 [NaCl]. In all titrations a competing ligand, known to complex strongly with the metal ion, and having its formation constants predetermined, was employed. The constants are used in computer simulation models to assess the relative efficacy of the agents in mobilizing these metals from plasma proteins into low-molecular-weight complexes and the results are compared to those for known chelating agents. It is shown that the lead mobilizing potential of the agents is greater than either EDTA ord-penicillamine; they are, however, less adept in the removal of cadmium and nickel than other established agents.

It is shown that the agents interact similarly with all of the ions studied except those of zinc(II), which are particularly strongly chelated by the hydrolysis product of ICRF 192. This effect could be responsible for the difference in cytotoxicity exhibited by the antitumour agent ICRF 159 (Razoxane) and its inactive homologue ICRF 192. However, the mechanism through which this might occur remains unclear.

    Notes: Abstract Formation constants for copper(II) and zinc(II) complexes of dextro-2,2′-(ethylenediimino)-di-1-butanol (ethambutol) and its metabolic oxidation product, 2,2′-(ethylenediimino)-dibutyric acid (EDBA) have been measured potentiometrically at 37°C, I=0.15 mol dm−3 [NaCl]. The constants are used in computer models to assess the extent of the formation of these complexes in vivo. These simulations indicate that whereas ethambutol forms metal complexes only to a limited extent in vivo, EDBA competes effectively under physiological conditions for copper(II) and zinc(II). This study suggests that zinc(II) binding by EDBA may account for a number of side effects of ethambutol treatment.

    Notes: Conclusion Cooper and colleagues have noted that the forces affecting the health of minority populations are the same forces, on a less intensive scale, that affect the health of the overall population.90 That is, we can view the health of the African-American population as the visible tip of an iceberg. This tip of the iceberg is a function of the average health of the entire population. Thus, an effective strategy must address not only the tip, but also should attack the entire iceberg and reduce the risk that it is creating throughout the population. Similarly, Wallace and Wallace have shown how the mechanisms of hierarchical diffusion, spatial contagion, and network diffusion lead to the spread of health and social problems initially confined in inner cities to suburban areas and smaller cities.91 That is, because of the economic links typing various communities together, there are mechanisms that will ensure the diffusion of disease and disorder from one area to another. If unaddressed, the problems of stigmatized and marginalized urban populations will have adverse impacts on the health, well-being, and quality of life of the more affluent. Thus, investments that will improve the social conditions of a marginalized population can have long-term positive health and social consequences for the entire society. In summary, there are large and pervasive racial differences in health. Their causes are not obscure and unknown. The roots of black-white differences in health are not due primarily to differences in beliefs and biology. Instead, they are driven by fundamental societal inequalities. Today, we can make a new commitment to liberty, justice, and equality for all by mustering the political will to eliminate some of the fundamental inequities in society that lie at the foundation of health disparities.

    Notes: Abstract We report on observations of a large eruptive event associated with a flare that occurred on 27 September 1998 made with the Richard B. Dunn Solar Telescope at Sacramento Peak Observatory (several wave bands including off-line-center Hα), in soft and hard X-rays (GOES and BATSE), and in several TRACE wave bands (including Fe ix/x 171 Å, Fe xii 195 Å, and C iv 1550 Å). The flare initiation is signaled by two Hα foot-point brightenings which are closely followed by a hard X-ray burst and a subsequent gradual increase in other wavelengths. The flare light curves show a complicated, three-component structure which includes two minor maxima before the main GOES class C5.2 peak after which there is a characteristic exponential decline. During the initial stages, a large spray event is observed within seconds of the hard X-ray burst which can be directly associated with a two-ribbon flare in Hα. The emission returns to pre-flare levels after about 35 min, by which time a set of bright post-flare loops have begun to form at temperatures of about 1.0–1.5 MK. Part of the flare plasma also intrudes into the penumbra of a large sunspot, generally a characteristic of very powerful flares, but the flare importance in GOES soft X-rays is in fact relatively modest. Much of the energy appears to be in the form of a second ejection which is observed in optical and ultraviolet bands, traveling out via several magnetic flux tubes from the main flare site (about 60° from Sun center) to beyond the limb.

    Notes: Summary Size distributions of PHB granules synthesized in recombinant Escherichia coli are determined by photosedimentation. Mean granule Stokes diameters are in the range 1.13–1.25 μm, which is larger than reported values for wild type microorganisms. Treatment with 1.5% hypochlorite and mild centrifugation did not affect granule size distribution. Treatment with 10% hypochlorite led to a significant reduction in mean diameter and total PHB.
