Notes: Abstract A method to facilitate electrochemical coatings from a non-aqueous, poorly conductive (and therefore normally difficult to work with) electrolyte is presented. The process involves loading the electrolyte with pretreated ion-exchange beads to provide multiple low-resistivity paths for ionic but not electronic conduction between a counter-electrode and workpiece. Using the formation of iron phosphate conversion coatings from an oil-based lubricant as a test case, the effects of bead moisture content and oil additive concentration on the coating process are described. With this new approach electrochemical coating is possible, even in poorly conductive fluids, over a far larger range of electrode separations than could otherwise be accomplished.

Notes: Abstract An all-metal hollow-cathode laser tube consisting of a perforated cylindrical cathode surrounded by a coaxial cylindrical anode has been operated as a He−Ne laser at 0.6328, 1.15 and 3.39 μm, and as a He−Cd laser at red, green and blue visible wavelengths, using both de and pulsed-plus-dc excitation. Laser oscillation in He−Zn, Ne−Cd, Xe−Cd and Ar−Cd mixtures has also been obtained. The hollow-cathode discharge consists primarily of an intense cathode glow inside the cathode cylinder, giving a quiet, stable, low-voltage, positive-resistance discharge. Results for the He−Ne and He−Cd laser output versus partial and total pressures and discharge currents are presented. The unoptimized laser performance for the He−Ne case approaches but does not yet equal the conventional positive-column case, while the He−Cd performance for the charge-transfer-pumped green 5378Å line appears particularly promising.

Notes: Abstract Several antitussive agents were assessed for their cough-suppressant activity. Cough responses were obtained by electrically stimulating the lower brainsten., in cats lightly anesthetized with sodium pentobarbital or in unanesthetized midcollicular decerebrate preparations. Cough sounds were recorded with the aid of a microphone. The cough reactive region was concentrated in an area dorsomedial to the trigeminal tract and nucleus. The potency of these antitussive (dextromethorphan, RO 21-47900-001, codeine, clonazepam, diazepam and caramiphen) were determined by studying their effect on the centrally induced cough responses. Each of these agents was administered in graded doses intravenously to determine the minimal effective doses for suppressing the cough responses. They are 0.57, 2.55, 1.71, 0.048, 0.28 and 3.18 mg/kg for the above listed drugs. The results indicate that clonazepam was found to be the most potent antitussive among these agents, the mean effective dose being about 1/35 of that of codeine. The antitussive potency of benzodiazepines is not well correlated with their muscle relaxant activity. For instance, clonazepam and diazepam have the same potency in depressing polysynaptic spinal reflexes, whereas the former is six times more potent than diazepam as an antitussive. This finding indicates that clonazepam has a high specificity as an antitussive.

Die i.v. Gabe von Natriumsalicylat verzögerte den Beginn, verlangsamte die Anstiegsgeschwindigkeit und setzte das Ausmass des LP-Fiebers herab, es war jedoch ohne Einfluss beim PGE1-Fieber.

Notes: Summary The effects of heating the preoptic/anterior hypothalamic (PO/AH) region on medullary respiratory neurons were studied in urethane-anesthetized, spontaneously breathing cats. The efferent phrenic nerve discharge or the pneumotachogram served as an indicator of central respiratory periodicity. In each animal, heating of the PO/AH area caused panting, defined as an increase of respiratory rate over 100 breaths per minute. During polypnea similar changes in the discharge patterns of both inspiratory and expiratory neurons were observed. There was a significant decrease in the duration of the discharge phase and the number of impulses per burst so that a reciprocal relationship existed between these parameters and respiratory rate. However, the average impulse frequency within a burst was higher during panting and could be shown to be a linear function of respiratory rate. Due to the concomitant decrease in inspiration and expiration times, the average discharge frequency per cycle time also increased in both inspiratory and expiratory medullary neurons. For continuously discharging neurons which displayed a higher frequency during the inspiration period (frequency modulated discharge), the phasic linkage remained unchanged during polypneic panting. From our results it is concluded that local heating of the PO/AH region shifts the entire respiratory system to a higher level of activity which can be correlated with ventilatory changes during panting.
