Notes: Abstract In many shrimp farms in the Kyushu and Chugoku areas of Japan, the so-called mid-gut gland cloudy disease of kuruma shrimp larvae(Penaeus japonicus) has occurred since 1971. The pathological changes associated with this baculoviral mid-gut gland necrosis (BMN) are extensive cellular necrosis, collapse of mid-gut gland cells, nuclear hypertrophy and finally karyorrhexis. Electron microscopic examination revealed the presence of virions and virogenic stages in the affected nuclei. Average length and diameter of the virions detected was 310 and 72 nm, respectively; nucleocapsids were 250 nm in size. Virions enclosing 2 nucleocapsids within a single envelope were rarely found. The spirally arranged capsomeres were at an angle of 37 to 38° to a horizontal line meeting at right angles with the long axis of the virion. Infectivity trials resulted in high mortality of healthy mysis and juveniles (2nd post-larval stage). Juveniles at the 9th post-larval stage showed no mortality, although they could be infected easily by the agent. Hypertrophied nuclei in squashed and stained preparations of the affected gland cells can be considered to be of reliable presumptive diagnostic character, and fluorescent antibody staining can be employed to confirm the diagnosis of BMN.

Notes: Abstract Various alumina-based supports were prepared by adding metal elements such as alkaline and rare earths to sol-gel alumina synthesized from aluminium isopropoxide using 2-methylpentane-2,4-diol as a solvent and the influence of the additives on the thermostability of the supports was investigated. It was found that Ba and Sr are the most effective in improving the thermostability of the alumina, La is moderately effective while Zr, Mg and Ca are ineffective. The influence of the additives on the catalytic activities of Pt/CeO x /MO y -Al2O3 (M=Ba, Sr, La) after the calculation at 1273 K was also investigated. Pt/CeO x /BaO-Al2O3 and Pt/ CeO x /La2O3-Al2O3 showed higher catalytic activity than Pt/CeO x /Al2O3, while Pt/CeO x / SrO-Al2O3 showed lower catalytic activity. The activity order was Ba 〉 La = none 〉 Sr in terms of CO and C2H4 oxidation.

Notes: Abstract Various CeOx-Al2O3 powders were prepared and the influence of the method of support preparation on the thermostability of the mixed alumina-supported Pt catalysts and on their oxidation of CO was investigated. It was found that the complexing agent-assisted sol-gel method is effective in improving the thermostability of the mixed alumina-supported Pt catalysts. Monolith Pt-Rh three-way catalysts were prepared using these aluminas and other thermostable alumina including Ba. Activity of the catalysts was also investigated after conducting accelerated thermal engine aging in order to test their durability. Under normal operating conditions of the automobile engine, the activity of the Pt-Rh three-way catalyst using the CeOx-Al2O3 support prepared by the complexing agent-assisted sol-gel method is nearly equal to that of the catalyst using the CeOx impregnated onto BaO-Al2O3 powder prepared by the same sol-gel method.

Notes: Abstract We report a rare case of ectopic ACTH syndrome associated with undifferentiated carcinoma of the ascending colon. A 62-year-old woman developed hypokalaemia and metabolic alkalosis associated with markedly elevated serum cortisol and plasma ACTH levels. High-dose dexamethasone (8 mg/day) did not suppress increased urinary 17-hydroxycorticosteroid and 17-ketosteroid excretion. Barium enema and abdominal computerised tomography showed a Borrmann II type tumour in the ascending colon, multiple metastatic nodules in the liver and bilateral enlargement of the adrenal glands. Histological examination of the resected primary colon cancer and metastatic liver tumour showed undifferentiated carcinoma with areas of distinct neuroendocrine, exocrine, and squamous differentiation. ACTH production by the tumour was confirmed by radioimmunoassay and immunohistochemistry. This is a unique case report of carcinoma of the colon with distinct multidirectional differentiation causing ectopic ACTH syndrome.

Notes: Abstract With the aim of detecting the timing of p53 and Ki-ras gene alterations in the gastric adenoma-carcinoma sequence, 19 early gastric adenocarcinomas arising from adenomas were studied. Immunohistochemically, 5 adenocarcinomas were positive for p53; 3 focally and 2 diffusely. The p53 point mutations were detected in a focal area with p53 immunoreactivity in 2 of the 5 p53-positive adenocarcinomas. This indicated that p53 point mutations may play a less crucial part in malignant conversion of adenoma to adenocarcinoma in the stomach than in the colon. No Ki-ras gene mutations at codons 12 and 13 were detected in any lesion. These results suggest that the adenoma-carcinoma sequence in the stomach has a different mechanism from that in the colon.

Notes: Summary Oscillatory after-potentials and triggered-automaticity were observed in dog ventricular muscle fibres when the fibres were exposed to K+-free, high-Ca++-solutions after K+-free, Ca++-free perfusion. They appeared at membrane potentials more negative than −60 mV.

Notes: Summary A primary Burkitt-type lymphoma of the central nervous system (CNS) is presented. The right temporoparietal tumor in a woman of 55 was diagnosed histologically as a Burkitt-type lymphoma. Primary Burkitt-type lymphoma of the CNS is extremely rare and has been reported previously only four times. This is the first case reported in Eastern Asia.

Notes: Summary An autopsy case of anaplastic ganglioglioma in the brain stem of a 12-year-old girl is reported. The ill-defined tumor involved the right cerebellar peduncle, medulla oblongata and upper cervical spinal cord, and showed mixed proliferation of many ganglioid cells and atypical pilocytic astrocytes with necrotic areas. Immunohistochemical studies revealed the presence of chromogranin A in most ganglioid cells and of metenkephalin in some large ganglioid cells. Glial cells were positive for glial fibrillary acidic protein and vimentin. Ultrastructurally, numerous dense-core granules of 90–220 nm in diameter were demonstrated in ganglioid cells and abundant glial filaments in glial cells. High neurosecretory activity in neuronal cells, suggested by chromogranin-immunoreactivity and dense-core granules, seems to be the most characteristic property of ganglion cell tumors.
