    Notizen: Abstract During manufacturing of δ-Al2O3/Mg8Li composites by melt infiltration reactive diffusion of Mg and Li into the fibre bulk takes place. No remarkable reaction zone was found at the fibre periphery, although, a Mg enrichment zone (approx. 100 nm thick) was detected there by EDX and EELS. In addition, MgO, Li2O and Mg2Si minority phases were identified by SAED within the fibre cross-section. The crystalline structure of the δ-Al2O3 fibres in the Mg8Li matrix remained of the alumina spinel type at all the time, however, a set of crystallographically coherent products assigned as γ(Li) was detected by XRD and SAED within the fibre cross-section. As believed, the γ(Li) results from topotactic Li+ incorporation into the δ-Al2O3 lattice so that no significant changes in terms of size and morphology of the alumina crystallites are observed.

    Notizen: Abstract Samples of sintered silicon carbide (SSiC) were irradiated with a KrF excimer laser (λ = 248 nm) at energy densities of 10, 15 and 25 J/cm2 in He atmosphere. The composition of the near surface region was investigated by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) after lapping, laser irradiation and tribological treatment, respectively. By laser irradiation a surface layer is formed which contains about 30% oxygen. The existence of different bonding states of Si, C and O was established by factor analysis of the AES depth profiles and by XPS. By laser irradiation SiC is decomposed and a siliconoxycarbide with the average composition SiC3.5O1.5 is formed. Beneath the oxidised surface layer the nominal elemental composition SiC is found but the sample represents a mixture of Si, graphite and siliconoxycarbide with a small amount of SiC only. Obviously, the decomposition zone exceeds in a depth 〉 300 nm.

    Notizen: Abstract The electronic structure of argon ion bombarded RexSi1-x films (∼ 100 nm) were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Argon ion bombardment leads to preferential sputtering of the silicon atoms and produces an subsurface rhenium enrichment. Changes in the core level binding energies and in the valence band structure have been studied as the rhenium concentration in the composites varies between 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 through the metal-semiconductor transition at x ≈ 0.32. The data of the multiplex spectra were subjected to factor analysis in order to determine the relevant components of the ion bombarded metal-silicon system. Four principal components are extracted and are proposed as the pure elements, a rhenium-rich phase and a component near the ReSi2 stoichiometry. Complementary investigations by SEM and AES provide further proof of the phase assignment in the rhenium-rich component. The silicon-rich component being in composition close to the metal-semiconductor transition can be correlated to the ReSi2 compound.

    Notizen: Abstract For further evaluation of photoemission properties of argon ion bombarded rhenium-silicon thin films pure element Re(21 nm) / Si(39 nm) / Re(21 nm) layer sandwiches were investigated on Si(111) substrates. TEM cross sectioning revealed abrupt interfaces between the polycrystalline Re layers and the amorphous Si layer in the as-deposited sample. In XPS sputter depth profiling the interfaces were severely broadened. This is not just a result of the finite electron escape depth together with atomic mixing and preferential sputtering which was demonstrated with the dynamic Monte Carlo simulation program T-DYN, but mainly caused by topographic effects and silicide formation. Factor analysis of XPS spectra results in two Re-Si principal components which can be ascribed to silicide bonding. Accordingly the valence band changes are caused by different bonding configurations. Bombardment-induced silicide formation is proved by TEM investigations of a selected cross-sectioned sandwich. Due to preferential bombardment-induced effects Re2Si is formed at the Re/Si interfaces in contrast to the ReSi2 growth on thermal heating. This is discussed in terms of the interface composition and the effective heat of formation (EHF) model.

    Notizen: Abstract For the ultimate use of micro machining in technology, the interaction of laser light and silicon nitride ceramic have been studied. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), different effects generated by radiation from Nd:YAG (free running mode) and excimer lasers have been observed. With the Nd:YAG laser (λ = 1.06 μm), reaction zone depths of several 100 nm, apparently caused by melting, were found. The excimer laser treatment with a lower penetration depth of the light (λ = 248 nm) led to very low chemical surface damage. Thus the excimer laser is favored for exact micro machining of nitride ceramics.

    Notizen: Abstract Foundations of sputtering profile evaluation are discussed, which allow the conversion of a measured sputtering profile, I = f(t), to a true element concentration profile celem. = f(z), or in special cases to a phase profile cphase = f(z). As a relatively new method for quantitative thin film analysis, glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (GDOES) has the special advantage of a narrow depth resolution function. Growing sputter crater profiles can be eliminated by a deconvolution algorithm, as is shown for TiN/TiAlN multilayers. The sputtering rate as a function of depth may be also deduced by a special wedge crater profile, which is sputtered into the material by an ion beam under suitable beam control. Further information on a phase depth profiling may be obtained by principal component analysis, as is discussed for AES and XPS investigations of P implanted Ti. A special technique of cross section imaging of thin layers is the analytical TEM, which allows the parallel investigation of microstructure and element distribution, as illustrated for a Cr-Fe multilayer.

    Notizen: Abstract From the higher fraction of grain boundaries in nanocrystalline substances a different corrosion behaviour in comparison to the conventional polycrystalline material can be expected, which may be utilised for the development of new corrosion resistant alloys. Therefore, the oxidation behaviour of these two different crystallisation states of FeAl8 was compared by means of electrochemical and surface analytical experiments. The oxide films formed after electrochemical passivation were investigated by Auger Electron Spectroscopy. The application of inelastic peak shape analysis by the method of Tougaard showed, that for both materials the oxide layer may be described by a model of a (below the contamination) buried layer with a thickness of only a few nanometers depending on the preparation conditions. Factor Analysis was applied for the evaluation of the differentiated low energy Auger electron spectra (20–100 eV) as a function of depth profiling sputtering time. For both, the nanocrystalline and the polycrystalline material, the inner part of the oxide layer was enriched in Al, whereas the very outer part (surface region) was enriched in Fe. No differences concerning the sputtering time for removal of the oxide layers were found for the two alloys.

    Notizen: Abstract The use of factor analysis for automatic interpretation of electron spectra needs in some cases a special data preprocessing. It was shown for x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy that in the case of non-conducting samples in addition to experimental methods (low energy electron flooding) a shift of the measured spectra with respect to a reference peak was useful. Thus, the residual energy shift due to sample charging, especially if the surface conductivity changes during measurement, could be removed. Several shift methods and the influence of different reference peaks were discussed.

    Notizen: Summary A new technique for rapid sampling and freezing of tissue specimens from isolated skeletal muscles is described. A sharp-edged steel tube is connected to the spring of an air gun and shot obliquely through the muscle thereby excising a tissue cylinder. Exactly at the moment when the steel tube leaves the undersurface of the muscle the excised muscle cylinder is shot directly into a cooling agent by the increased pressure developed by the modified air gun. The time between excision and immersion of the muscle cylinder in the cooling agent does not exceed 10 msec. Therefore, the rapidity of cooling is practically limited by the thermal conductivity of the cooling agents and by the isolating gas cover formed around the tissue specimens. Experiments in dogs show that up to 6 specimens can be shot from one gastrocnemius by this technique without interrupting contractions.

    Notizen: Summary A method for the measurement of intraventricular volume by means of an ultrasound echo technique (intraventricular catheter) is described. From two diameters measured and a correction factor the volume is calculated. The correction factor was derived from measurements on excised non beating hearts. In experiments on beating hearts of 6 anesthetized dogs stroke volume was measured simultaneously with the ultrasonic catheter and the dye dilution technique. Under normal physiological conditions there was a good agreement between the two methods. The difference of 4.0±1.7% (N=24) was not significant. When the hearts were enlarged or made smaller, large deviations occurred which were consistent in their direction, while the scattering remained almost as small as under basic conditions. Only further work can show whether the method can be developed to a reliable procedure for routine measurement of stroke volume under a variety of conditions.
