    Notes: Summary Under the Antarctic coastal fast ice a light trap proved to be promising device for collecting not only planktonic animals, but also micronektonic animals like krill which have been rarely collected with tow nets. Sampling was conducted at night from May through November, 1984 in Kitano-ura Cove off the East Ongul Island in Lützow-Holm Bay. Design of the gear and the sampling procedure are described. A total of 37 samplings were made that resulted in the collection of seven species of copepods, eight species of amphipods, three forms of notothenid fish larvae, two species each of euphausiids and polychaetes, and one species each of mysid, cumacean, isopod and tanaid crustaceans. All were collected in satisfactory condition for laboratory experiments. During the winter Euphasia superba was found to be benthopelagic and it probably feeds on detritus on the sea floor at about 40 m depth under the ice.

    Notes: Abstract Cell culture models of calcium phosphate renal stone formation were established using the MDCK cell line. Renal microliths were detected within pseudocysts in three-dimensional soft agar cultures, and were also observed in the basal region of cells lining the cell sheet, and immediately beneath domes or blisters in monolayers and collagen gel cultures. Light and scanning electron microscopy indicated that these microliths had a similar lamellated and spherical appearance to those in humans. These microliths were first detected microscopically after 21 days of culture, and were found to be composed of calcium phosphate by X-ray and microinfrared spectroscopic analyses. These culture models may provide a powerful new tool to study the pathogenesis of renal stone diseases and/or calcium phosphate stone formation in humans and animals.

    Notes: Summary The inner ear of spontaneously diabetic WBN/Kob rats was functionally and morphologically examined in order to elucidate the relationship between diabetes mellitus and hearing impairment. At 3 months of age, WBN/Kob rats were non-diabetic, and their hearing function was normal. At 6–7 months of age, they showed decreased glucose tolerance and an increasing tendency toward urinary excretion of glucose without high plasma concentration of glucose, and were therefore judged to be pre-diabetic. They also displayed a significant elevation of hearing threshold in the auditory brainstem response, but showed little morphological and histochemical changes in the inner ear. At 12–13 months of age, they were spontaneously diabetic and showed a more apparent elevation of hearing threshold in auditory brainstem response than that in pre-diabetic animals. In addition, they displayed a marked decrease in the number of spiral ganglion cells and oedematous changes in the stria vascularis. The stria vascularis also showed a decrease in the intensity of staining with some lectins, i. e., wheat germ agglutinin, succinylated wheat germ agglutinin, Soranum tuberosum lectin, and concanavalin A. In conclusion, hearing impairment is induced by diabetes in the WBN/Kob rats first as an elevation of hearing threshold along with glucose intolerance; secondly, as a decrease in the number of spiral ganglion cells; and thirdly, as oedematous change of the stria vascularis with decreased intensity of lectin staining.     Notes: Summary The mechanism of hearing impairment due to diabetes mellitus was examined in relation to changes in the level of the immunoreaction for the protein gene product 9.5 in the cochlea of spontaneously diabetic WBN/Kob rats. At 7 months (33 weeks) of age, when half of the males of this strain manifest diabetes, male WBN/Kob rats were divided into two groups as follows: one group consisted of prediabetic animals showing slightly decreased tolerance to glucose with a normal plasma concentration of glucose, normal urinary excretion of glucose, and functional hearing impairment (assessed in terms of elevation of hearing threshold). The second group consisted of diabetic animals with glucose intolerance, high plasma glucose level, polyuria, urinary glucose excretion, and more apparent elevation of hearing threshold. According to morphometric analysis of the spiral ganglion, the number of ganglion cells was significantly smaller in both the prediabetic and the diabetic animals than in the age-matched control Wistar rats. The staining intensity for protein gene product 9.5 was increased in some spiral ganglion cells of diabetic animals, but decreased in others according to quantitative immunohistochemical analysis. On the other hand, the immunoreactivity for protein gene product 9.5 was similar in the prediabetic animals to that in the control Wistar rats. These results suggest that numerical and immunohistochemical changes in the spiral ganglion cells reflect the onset and degree of the diabetic hearing impairment. [Diabetologia (1997) 40: 173–178]

    Notes: Abstract. A levoatrial cardinal vein is a rare congenital anomaly of the systemic veins. It is frequently associated with left-side obstructive anomalies. We report a case of tetralogy of Fallot with a levoatrial cardinal vein. The innominate vein was absent and two left upper pulmonary veins connected to this vein. There were no left-side obstructive anomalies.

    Notes: Abstract The efficiency of oesophagus and stomach temperature loggers to detect ingestion of prey items was studied in captive Adélie penguins (Pygoscelis adeliae) fed on land in Antarctica and in an aquarium in Japan. On land, the detection rate was studied for different masses of prey delivered at various frequencies, while in the pool the delay between capture and swallowing was investigated. The rate at which food items were detected and the magnitude of the temperature drops induced were higher in the oesophagus than in the stomach. Where small food items were delivered at a high frequency, birds collected prey items in the beak before swallowing them. Thus, oesophagus sensors may underestimate the number of prey swallowed if the system is used in the wild. In the oesophagus temperature recordings, the magnitude of drops was weakly, but positively, correlated to the mass of single, ingested prey (R 2=0.40).

    Notes: Abstract Sexual differences in the diet of king cormorants,Phalacrocorax albiventer, were investigated during the 1993/1994 austral summer at Macquarie Island. The major food items, identified by otoliths in regurgitations, were demersal fish; fish mass consumed could be estimated using a wet mass-otolith length relationship. Two fish species,Paranotothenia magellanica andHarpagifer georgianus, constituted 98% of the wet mass (male and female cormorants combined). Estimated individual fish mass ofParanotothenia magellanica (19.6±11.6 g) was greater than that ofH. georgianus (2.8±1.3 g). Total wet mass of food and number of fish in regurgitations did not differ statistically between the sexes of cormorants. However, males tended to feed on larger fish than did females.

    Notes: Abstract  The diffusion behavior of polymer latex particles in dispersion near the quartz interface has been estimated by evanescent wave dynamic light scattering (EVDLS) technique. The diffusion coefficient of the particles was measured as a function of the distance between the particle and interface. The apparent diffusion coefficient estimated by EVDLS was small for particles near the interface and increased upon increasing the distance from the interface, and then saturated at a certain value which is close to the value expected for free-motion. The range of the distance over which diffusion was affected by interaction with the interface depended on the added salt concentration. This means that the diffusion of the particle is influenced by an electrostatic interaction between the particle and quartz interface in addition to the hydrodynamic effect near the wall. This range was found to be more than 800 nm at 0 M salt condition but about 400 nm at 10-4 and 10-3 M salt conditions. Hence it is appropriate to say that the hydrodynamic effect reaches up to 400 nm and the electrostatic effect is longer ranged, more than 800 nm, for the system studied here. The EVDLS technique is a very powerful tool for quantitative estimations of the dynamic behavior of the particle near the interface and for estimation of the range where the wall effect is dominant. EVDLS will give us an answer to the question of “where is the ‘interface’ and where is the ‘bulk’?”.

    Notes: Abstract On the hypothesis that the time profile of a type III burst corresponds directly to the flux of electron beam, the similarity of time profile is shown to be maintained even if the electron velocity decreases with distance provided that the time is normalized to unity at the time of maximum flux. The observed time profiles of type III bursts with simple shape seem to follow the similarity law in almost all frequency range. This evidence may indicate that the time profile, both the rising and decaying phases, of a type III burst should be attributed to a common origin, e.g., the time variation of exciter determined by the initial velocity distribution in the electron beam, instead of attributing the rising time to the beam length and the decay time to the damping of plasma waves after the passage of the electron beam.
