    Notes: Summary The DNA base composition and the sensitivity to iron of an ironoxidizing Metallogenium was determined. A comparison of the organism with Gallionella ferruginea suggests that the iron-oxidizing Metallogenium may be a common contaminant of G. ferruginea cultures.

    Notes: Abstract Scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observations of naturally and artificially diseased corals reveal that the disease is characterized by a filamentous matrix of cyanobacterial andBeggiatoa filaments. Spiral bacteria are commonly embedded in the matrix. The artificial disease is not manifested as the characteristic “black line disease” and does not contain filaments of cyanobacteria. This suggests that cyanobacteria are necessary for the black line phenomenon. The colorless, sulfide-oxidizing bacteriumBeggiatoa, however, is always associated with the disease.

    Notes: Abstract The internal colony-forming bacterial flora of the schistosome intermediate host snailBiomphalaria glabrata (Say) has been characterized in ca. 500 individual snails from Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, and St. Lucia, and from laboratory aquaria. Freshly captured wild snails harbor 2–40×106 CFU·g−1, and healthy aquarium snails harbor 4–16×107 CFU·g−1, whereas moribund individuals have 4–10 times as many bacteria as healthy individuals from the same habitats.Pseudomonas spp. are the most common predominant bacteria in normal snails, whereasAcinetobacter, Aeromonas, andMoraxella spp. predominate in moribund snails. External bacterial populations in water appear to have little effect on the composition and size of the flora in any snail. In addition to normal (healthy) and moribund snails, a third group of snails has been distinguished on the basis of internal bacterial density and predominating genera. These “high-density” snails may have undergone stresses and may harbor opportunistic pathogens. The microfloras of wild and laboratory-reared snails can be altered and stimulated to increase in density by crowding the snails or treating them with antibiotics.

    Notes: Abstract Coral heads of the genusPlatigyra exposed to low concentrations of crude oil, copper sulfate, potassium phosphate, or dextrose were killed in periods of 5 to 10 days in aquarium studies. The chemicals stimulated the production of large quantities of mucus by the corals. In aquaria treated with antibiotics to prevent microbial growth,Platigyra survived the presence of these chemicals in the water, indicating a role of the microflora in the death of the corals. Evidence was obtained implicating predatory bacteria,Desulfovibrio andBeggiatoa, in the destruction of the stressed coral colonies.

    Notes: Abstract Observations with the scanning electron microscope showed that the deep-sea isopodBathynomus giganteus harbors a dense microflora within the digestive tract. The gut microflora is composed of a diversity of microorganisms, including an unusually large bacterial morphotype that predominates almost exclusively in the anterior end of the hindgut. The majority of these large bacteria measured 1.9 μm×8.5 μm and many reached a size of 2.0 μm×10.0 μm.

    Notes: Abstract Prokaryotes lacking a cell wall, formerly known as mycoplasmas were recently designated as the new class, Mollicutes. The association of unidentified “mycoplasma-like organisms” with aquatic animals has been suggested previously on the basis of visual observations alone. We report the pure-culture identification of a true mollicute, anAcholeplasma, that consistently associates with the larvae and adults of the marine bryozoanWatersipora arcuata. This represents the first confirmed nondisease association between a mollicute and an aquatic invertebrate.

    Notes: Abstract. Experiments were conducted to determine whether species of Aeromonas were pathogenic to the zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha. A. jandaei, A. veronii, and A. media, identified with Biolog, were originally isolated from dead zebra mussels. When inoculated into living mussels, these bacteria resulted in the mortality of the bivalves. Two additional species, A. salmonicida salmonicida (ATCC 33678) and A. hydrophila (ATCC 7966), were also demonstrated to be pathogenic to the mussels. In addition to the pathogenicity, the data also suggest that the zebra mussels may be an important reservoir for these bacteria in freshwater environments.
