By calculation of {D n} of 2341 coding regions of nucleic acid sequences it is demonstrated that about 2/3 of sequences has correlation length ≤2, 10% of sequences—correlation with 3-periodicity and others—long range aperiodic correlations. The implications of the results from the interactions of random mutation and natural selection are discussed briefly.

    Notes: Abstract A new method for reconstructing evolutionary relationship among bacteria by use of rRNA sequence data is proposed. The method is based on the concept of fuzzy classification of probabilitiesp(i), p(i/j) andp(i/j*) (i=A,G,C,U) of each sequence. The resulting partition tree shares common features of previous works but has some new peculiarities.

    Notes: Summary The number and radius of molecular order free space present in polybutadiene (PBD)/polyisoprene (PIP) blend were observed by positron life-time measurement, and apparent free volume fraction was estimated. The changes in the number and radius of the free space were not represented to be a linear function of blend composition. The apparent free volume fraction increased by mixing PBD with PIP and was approximated by a concave curve depicted against blend composition, even though the excess volume of mixing was proved to be negative. The change in the apparent free volume fraction was related to the variation of thermal expansion coefficient on blend composition.

    Notes: Abstract Cyclic voltammetry (CV), differential capacity (DC), and charge densitymeasurements have been employed to study the benzoate (BZ) adsorption at the Au(111)electrode surface. Thermodynamic analysis of charge density (σM) data has beenperformed to describe the properties of the adsorbed benzoate ion. The Gibbsexcess Γ, Gibbs energy of adsorption ΔG, and the number of electrons flowingto the interface per adsorbed benzoate ion at a constant potential (electrosorptionvalency) and at a constant bulk concentration of the benzoate (reciprocal of theEsin—Markov coefficient) have been determined. The results demonstrate thatalthough benzoate adsorption starts at negative charge densities, it takes placepredominantly at a positively charged surface. At the most positive potentials,the surface concentration of benzoate attains a limiting value of about 7.3×10−10mol-cm−2, which is independent of the bulk benzoate concentration. This valueis consistent with packing density corresponding to a closed-packed monolayerof vertically adsorbed benzoate molecules. At negative charge densities, benzoateassumes a flat (π-bonded) surface coordination. The surface coordination ofbenzoate changes, by moving from a negatively to positively charged surface.At the negatively charged surface, the electrosorption bond is quite polar. Thepolarity of the chemisorption bond is significantly reduced due either to a chargetransfer or a screening of the charge on the anion by the charge on the metal.

    Notes: Abstract Introduction: Surgical cryoablation, a highly effective technique used during antiarrhythmic surgery, produces voluminous, histologically uniform and discreet myocardial lesions. In contrast, radiofrequency (RF) catheter ablation, which as a result of its less invasive nature has largely supplanted antiarrhythmic surgery, produces smaller, histologically heterogeneous myocardial lesions. Since small lesion size and heterogeneity may reduce antiarrhythmic efficacy, we sought to reproduce the large, histologically homogeneous lesions created by surgical cryoablation, using a catheter cryoablation system (Cryogen, Inc., San Diego, CA) in the canine ventricle. Methods and Results: In seven dogs, nineteen ventricular lesions (two right and seventeen left) were created with a 10F cryoablation catheter with either a 2 or 6[emsp4 ]mm tip. In one dog AV node ablation was also performed. For each 'freeze', catheter tip nadir temperature, lesion width, depth, and transmurality were recorded, and lesion volume calculated. Average tip nadir temperature was −79.6±4.9°C. Cooler nadir tip temperature was associated with deeper (p=.007) and more voluminous lesions (p=.042), and a greater likelihood of lesion transmurality (p=.034). Average lesion volume was 500±356[emsp4 ]mm3. No other variables predicted lesion volume or transmurality. Histologically, the catheter cryoablation lesions were sharply demarcated and homogeneous. The single freeze performed at the AV junction produced complete AV block. One complication, catheter rupture following its repetitive use, resulted in a coronary air embolus and death. Conclusion: Catheter cryoablation of canine ventricular myocardium produced voluminous, discrete, transmural lesions, which might be effective for ablation of ventricular tachycardia. Lesion volume and transmurality were dependent on catheter tip nadir temperature.

    Notes: Abstract Medulloblastoma is the most frequent pediatric brain tumor, with the capacities of rapid proliferation and intracranal dissemination. However, the factor(s) regulating medulloblastoma growth has not yet been well characterized. Leukemia-inhibitory factor (LIF) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) play different roles in the formation/progression of various embryonic and pediatric tumors, but their biological effects on medulloblastoma cells are less well known. Therefore, in vivo and in vitro expression of LIF, IL-6 and their signal transducer genes encoding LIF receptor (LIFR), IL-6 receptor (IL-6R) and gpl30 in human medulloblastoma cells were investigated by multiple cellular and molecular biology approaches. The results revealed that LIF expression could be found in 26 out of 28 tumors/cell line and over 90% of the samples expressed LIFR, IL-6R and gp130. In contrast, none of the samples showed IL-6 expression. An established medulloblastoma cell line, Med-3, was used to evaluate the potential effects of LIF and IL-6 on the proliferation of medulloblastoma cells. The growth of Med-3 cells was efficiently inhibited either by anti-LIF antibody or by antisense LIF oligonucleotide. Addition of exogenous human recombinant IL-6 could dramatically enhance Med-3 cell outgrowth. Our data thus for the first time demonstrated the important role of LIF as an autocrinal and IL-6 as a paracrinal growth factor in the proliferation of medulloblastoma cells.

    Notes: Abstract We discuss the preheating phase of solar flares triggered by emerging magnetic flux. We consider the development of microinstabilities in the diffusion region during the emergence process and we propose four different types of reconnection, by which we explain the preheating, as well as the impulsive phase of flares. We find that during the emergence of new magnetic flux the current sheet will not ‘jump’ from the initial classical state to a fully turbulent one, but will remain in a marginally turbulent state which may develop either gradually or impulsively depending on the conditions of emergence. As a consequence of this, we find that four cases of reconnection are indeed possible: a week gradual heating, a weak impulsive process, a gradual preheating followed by an impulsive phase, and violent bursty reconnection. The expansion rate of the diffusion region, the duration of the gradual phase, the magnetic energy release, and the energy deposition rate in coronal loops during the gradual phase are derived under simplifying assumptions and applied to X-ray and UV observations of flares from the Solar Maximum Mission.

    Notes: Abstract The variations of the growth rates of ECM at first four harmonics in X-, Z-, and O-modes excited by a hollow beam distribution of weakly relativistic electrons with a parameter ξ ≡ ω p /Ω e are presented in this paper. The results show that the second harmonic of ECM in X-mode dominates the instability if ξ 〈 1, and if 1.2 ≲ ξ ≲, 2 or 2.2 ≲ ξ ≲ 3 the third or fourth harmonic will dominate. The second and third harmonics of Z-mode waves grow faster only if 2 ≲ ξ ≲ 2.2 and 3 ≲ ξ ≲ 3.2, respectively, so it would not be a competition in most cases. It is suggested that the ECM emission at these harmonics in X-mode is a possible mechanism to produce solar spike emissions with high brightness temperature at shorter and longer decimetric wavelengths.

    Notes: Summary A kinetic model describing the biosynthesis of celphalosporin C in Cephalosporium acremonium has been developed to identify the rate-limiting step(s). Using this model and in-vitro kinetic data of the biosynthetic enzymes, the production kinetics of cephalosporin C were examined theoretically. The predicted time profile of the specific production rate during batch culture is in good agreement with that of experimental results published previously. Sensitivity analysis indicates that δ-(l-α-aminoadipyl)-l-cysteinyl-d-valine (ACV) synthetase is the rate-limiting enzyme. Our analysis also predicts that increasing ACV synthetase enhances the production rate initially until expandase/hydroxylase becomes rate-limiting. Furthermore, increasing expandase/hydroxylase reduces the accumulation of penicillin N, and thus, enhances the production of cephalosporin C. Based on our analysis, amplifying both ACV synthetase and expandase/hydroxylase concurrently should enhance the production rate to a great extent.

    Notes: Abstract  The amphibian Xenopus laevis is one non-mammalian vertebrate in which the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) has been analyzed extensively. Class IIβ, class Ia, LMP2, LMP7, HSP70, C4, Factor B, and Ring3 genes have been identified and mapped to the MHC. Here, we report the isolation of a transporter associated with antigen processing (TAP) gene, TAP2, and demonstrate its linkage to the MHC. While the ATP-binding region of Xenopus TAP2 is highly conserved in evolution, amino acid identity to other vertebrate TAP proteins was not detected in the N-terminal region. Segregation analysis of 34 individuals from two families showed exact restriction fragment length polymorphism matching between the MHC class Ia gene and the one TAP2 gene demonstrating linkage conservation since the mammalian/amphibian divergence ∼350 million years ago. In addition, one non-MHC-linked TAP2–hybridizing fragment was detected in approximately half of the individuals tested. Interestingly, TAP2 allelic lineages appear to match those of LMP7 and classical class I, which previously were categorized into two highly divergent groups that emerged at least 60 million years ago. Similar to LMP7 and class Ia,TAP2 is expressed ubiquitously with highest levels in intestine and spleen.
