Notes: Abstract The effect of injection of various concentrations (4 ng to 0.5 μg/larva) of α-amanitin on chromosomal RNA synthesis in larval salivary glands of D. hydei was investigated at subsequent time intervals (90 min to 20 hrs) after injection. — As revealed by autoradiography, 3H-uridine incorporation into the polytene chromosomes was greatly reduced as compared with that in control larvae. In α-amanitin injected larvae, new chromosome puffs could be induced by a temperature treatment. These puffs never attained a size comparable to that in the controls. The newly induced puffs did not show specific incorporation of 3H-uridine. — Puffs which were active before the toxin was applied undergo a reduction in size and incorporation of 3H-uridine.

Notes: Abstract Examination of 38 sediment cores, bottom photographs, 7,000 km of 3.5 kHz reflection profiles and other seismic data from the southern part of the Nares Abyssal Plain suggests that complex sedimentary patterns and high sedimentation rates can be largely attributed to effects of a deep boundary current flowing eastward along the north flank of the Greater Antilles Outer Ridge. It is concluded that the areal dispersal pattern of turbidites on the plain results mainly from Quaternary climatically-induced fluctuations of the boundary current intensity.

Notes: Abstract Long-term changes in distribution and taxonomic composition of chironomid larvae and oligochaetes in two water storage reservoirs in The Netherlands were studied. A succession among the chironomid species was observed. In the last 10–15 years chironomid densities varied. Compared with other lakes chironomid densities were high. Densities of chironomids were higher in the littoral zone than in the profundal zone. The opposite was found for oligochaetes. Densities and composition of the chironomid fauna in the two reservoirs were similar.Procladius, Tanytarsus andHarnischia dominated at all depths. However, pupal exuviae samples showed some differences in chironomid taxonomic composition between the two reservoirs. Orthocladiinae, rarely found in bottom samples, abounded in pupal exuviae samples.

Notes: Abstract For three years chironomid larvae were collected bimonthly with a grab sampler in two deep storage reservoirs in The Netherlands. Chironomid pupal exuviae were collected monthly, from April to November, with a handnet. Net samples yielded more taxa than grab samples. The taxa found in net samples originated from more habitats, than taxa found in grab samples. The relative contribution of Orthocladiinae was much larger in net samples. Based on the results obtained in the two reservoirs, some advantages and disadvantages of both sampling methods are discussed.
