Notes: Summary The ostracod Cyprideis torosa Jones 1850 is a dominant species in brackish water habitats. To assess its importance, growth and respiration were measured. The shells form an increasing part of total weight as the animals grow but there is no correlation between shell weight and soft parts weight in the adults, indicating that tissue growth is a continuous process in these ostracods. Respiration was measured at 20° C. The slope of the log-log regression of respiration on dry weight was 0.746, showing that Cyprideis torosa follows the general rule for this relationship. The respiration rate per unit biomass was 0.246 nl O2 μg-1 h-1, which is low but well within the range of observed meiobenthic respiration rates. The Q10, expressing the temperature dependence of respiration, was 2.15. The general validity of Price and Warwick's (1980) hypothesis relating Q10 to stability of food supply is questioned.

Notes: Abstract Planer stripe and foil targets coated with NaF were irradiated with high intensity 351 nm laser radiation of 130 ps duration. Time-integrated as well as time-resolved measurement of gain on NaXIHα at 54.2Å were made. A time-integrated gain of 1.2 −1.1 +0.8 cm−1 and a time-resolved peak gain of 3.2±1.0 cm−1 were obtained. A detailed account of the experimental procedures for determination of gain is given.

Notes: Summary A 26-year-old man died from severe brain contusion after falling from a moving car during an attempt at car-surfing. Toxicological urine screening was positive for amphetamines, the blood analysis revealed a MDMA level of 0.63 mg/l and a blood alcohol concentration of 1.23 g/l. The case is another example of the bizarre and reckless behaviour which may result from the euphorogenic activity of ecstasy and the circumstances in which it is commonly used.

Notes: Summary Aspects of the demography of Monhystera disjuncta were investigated at different temperatures (in agnotobiotic cultures) and in different feeding conditions (monoxenic cultures with different bacterial strains, and different densities in the feeding suspension with one strain). Embryonic development time, minimum generation time, egg deposition rate and adult longevity depend on temperature, quality and quantity of food offered. Body mass at maturity is an allometric function of food density. It is shown that a previously inferred selectivity in food uptake is an artifact of culture conditions. pH buffering and addition of sterols permit culture of the species on a wide variety of bacterial strains. M. disjuncta is less well adapted to take advantage of high food density than are nematodes from polysaprobic environments. The animals channel surplus energy intake into a larger body mass, without being able to increase their rate of population growth accordingly.

Notes: Summary The ostracod Cyprideis torosa Jones, 1850 is a dominant species in the meiofauna of brackish water habitats. Its production in the field over a five-year period has been calculated using two production models. The first model uses the age-distribution of shells preserved in the sediment to assess the stage-specific mortality rates and the stage durations. The second model is the size-frequency model, modified for use with developmental stages instead of size-classes. Productions calculated with both methods agree very well. Their values are 9.7 and 9.2 g dwt·m−2·y−1 respectively. The yearly P/B-ratio is 2.7 or 2.6 y−1, production efficiency P/A is 0.38 or 0.37. The production efficiency of Cyprideis torosa nearly equals the mean efficiency of non-insect invertebrate detritivores. The species' conservative strategy and long generation time enables it to maintain a relatively high biomass with a fixed amount of food. These characteristics make it a superior competitor.

Notes: Abstract We present an analytical ideal observer model to predict discrimination thresholds for stimuli that are processed by arrays of noise-perturbed receptors that have smooth and overlapping tuning functions. We show that hyperacuity phenomena are natural properties of these systems. A comparison of thresholds for a number of discrimination tasks allows a psychophysically derived estimate of parameters of the receptor array involved. We note the consistency of this scheme with data from a number of visual subfields.

Notes: Abstract Isolated rat diaphragm preparations treated with soman or with the irreversible and oxime resistant cholinesterase (ChE) inhibitor S27 (see Compounds) showed a considerable recovery of neuromuscular transmission (NMT) during incubation with the (bis)pyridinium oximes HI-6, HGG-12, P2S and obidoxime. In the soman-treated preparations this NMT recovery was predominantly caused by reactivation of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) but in the S27-treated preparations it was caused by a direct (pharmacological) effect unrelated to enzyme reactivation. Atropinized rats were artificially ventilated after injection with 3×LD50 soman for 3 h and then treated with HI-6, i.e. at a time when oxime reactivation of soman inhibited ChE is no longer possible. Nevertheless, these rats started to breathe spontaneously and 50−60% survived more than 24 h, whereas all control animals (saline instead of HI-6) died within 10 min after artificial ventilation was terminated. In such animals no significant reactivation of ChE activity at various time intervals following HI-6 treatment was found, either in the diaphragms or in the brains. There was a significant amount of NMT (50%) in vitro in diaphragms obtained from these animals. This NMT did not improve in vitro in the presence of HI-6 and was not inhibited by soman administered to the medium. It is concluded that in this case the NMT found was based on synaptic adaptation to the continued inhibition of ChE and that the survival of the animals might be due to a combination of this synaptic adaptation and central direct effects of HI-6.

Notes: Summary The effect of the calcium antagonist, diltiazem, on glycoregulation was investigated in 12 healthy volunteers using a standard glucose tolerance test. No significant change was observed in plasma glucose, insulin or glucagon levels after oral treatment for B days with diltiazem 180 mg/day.

Notes: Abstract No holoenzyme pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ)-dependent glucose dehydrogenase and only very low apoenzyme levels could be detected in cells of Klebsiella pneumoniae, growing anaerobically, or carrying out a fumarate or nitrate respiration. Low glucose dehydrogenase activity in some aerobic glucose-excess cultures of K. pneumoniae (ammonia or sulphate limitation) was increased significantly by addition of PQQ, whereas in cells already possessing a high glucose dehydrogenase activity (phosphate or potassium limitation) extra PQQ had almost no effect. These observations indicate that the glucose dehydrogenase activity in K. pneumoniae is modulated by both PQQ synthesis and synthesis of the glucose dehydrogenase apo-enzyme.
