Notes: Summary  We report three lymphoma patients in whom the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) was observed during the course of lymphoma-associated hemophagocytic syndrome (LAHS). The clinical course was devoid of any known mechanism for SIADH which could be attributable to lymphoma or antineoplastic treatment. Alternatively, high serum levels of interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α, which stimulate the secretion of antidiuretic hormone, may have contributed to the development of SIADH in our patients, who were receiving glucocorticoids. In conclusion, LAHS patients should be considered to be at high risk for SIADH.

Notes: Abstract  We present a first report of a CD7+ acute myelogenous leukemia patient who developed intracranial myeloblastomas. The patient was neurologically normal on physical examination at presentation. The peripheral leukocyte count was extremely high (203.6×109/l). The blasts expressed CD7 and CD56 (neural cell adhesion molecule) in addition to CD13, CD33, CD34, and HLA-DR. The karyotype of bone marrow cells was normal. The patient was diagnosed as having acute myelogenous leukemia (AML, M1). Following a short period of complete remission, bone marrow relapse and meningeal leukemia occurred, and the patient died of respiratory failure. Autopsy revealed that blasts had invaded the subarachnoid space and cerebellum, and two myeloblastomas were found in the cerebellar hemisphere. Both CD7+ and CD56+ AML have been reported to have a high incidence of central nervous system involvement. CD7+ CD56+ AML calls for prophylaxis of central nervous system leukemia.

Notes: Abstract. Objective and Design: To determine whether interleukin-13 (IL-13) possesses anti-inflammatory properties with respect to polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs). Effects of IL-13 on production of the chemokine, macrophage inflammatory protein-1 alpha (MIP-1α), by PMNs were analyzed.¶Subjects: Human peripheral blood PMNs obtained from healthy volunteers.¶Methods: PMNs were stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and/or IL-13 for selected periods of time, and MIP-1α expression was assessed by ELISA and Northern blot analysis.¶Results: IL-13 suppressed expression and production of PMN-derived MIP-1α mRNA and protein in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Inhibition of protein synthesis caused significant enhancement of MIP-1α mRNA expression. The inhibitory activity of IL-13 was abrogated, however, in the presence of cycloheximide, suggesting that IL-13's effect was via synthesis of de novo repressor protein(s).¶Conclusions: PMN-derived chemokines are regulated by both proinflammatory and immunomodulatory cytokines. The coordinated production of these substances is likely to be important in the orchestration of inflammatory and immune responses.

Notes: Abstract  A survey is given of recent progress in measurements of photoabsorption, photoionization, and photodissociation cross-sections of molecules in the wavelength range of photons in the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV), where the optical oscillator-strengths of most molecules are predominantly distributed. Some remarks are presented on molecules in the condensed phase. Particular emphasis is placed on the current understanding of spectroscopy and dissociation dynamics of molecules in the superexcited states which are produced through the interaction of photons in this wavelength range. In the VUV range, most of the observed superexcited states are assigned to high-Rydberg states which are vibrationally (and/or rotationally), doubly, or inner-core excited, and converge to each of the ion states.

Notes: Summary Previous serological studies strongly suggested Akabane virus to be the etiologic agent of epizootic abortion and congenital arthrogryposis-hydranencephaly in cattle, and this view was further corroborated in this study by the isolation of the virus from an aborted fetus in an epizootic of the disease and from a fetus extracted from a cow which was suggested by serologic tests to have a recent infection with the virus. The latter fetus had histological changes of encephalomyelitis and polymyositis, and specific antigens of Akabane virus was shown by the immunofluorescent technique in brain tissues as well as skeletal muscular tissues. The virus was recovered from various fetal tissues and fluids, and in relatively large amounts from brain, spinal cord, cerebral fluid, skeletal muscles and fetal placenta. The intracranial inoculation of suckling mice, 1–2 days of age, was the most sensitive system for Akabane virus isolation and Hm Lu-1, a continuous cell line from hamster lung, seemed almost as sensitive as suckling mice.

Notes: Abstract A Lyman-α excitation spectrum has been observed using synchrotron radiation in the energy region corresponding to the double electron excitation of H2. There exist in the spectrum three thresholds at 26.6±0.5 eV, 29.2±0.7 eV and 30.9±0.6 eV, and a dip at 34.1±0.5 eV. A Lyman-α excitation spectrum in the energy region corresponding to the single electron excitation has been also observed using a detection system which works as a band pass filter for detecting of Lyman-α fluorescence. The cross section of Lyman-α fluorescence in the photodissociation of the doubly excited states is very small, e.g., in the order of 10−20 cm2 at 30 eV, in comparison with that from the single electron excitation.

Notes: Abstract The diffusion behavior of hydrogen in the oxide films of zircaloy-4 specimens containing different size of Zr(Fe,Cr)2 precipitates was examined. In the case of the specimen containing fine precipitates, hydrogen diffused uniformly through the zirconium oxide phase. The diffusion coefficient was 2·10−21 m2·s−1 at room temperature and 6·10−19 m2·s−1 at 673 K. The transport rate of hydrogen in the oxide film of the specimen containing coarse precipitates was significantly higher than that of the specimen containing fine ones at both room temperature and 673 K.
