Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Konzentrationsänderung der Monoamine Norepinephrin (NE), Dopamin (DA) und Serotonin (5-HT) im Gehirn wurde während der akuten Asphyxie (Strangulation, Anoxie und Ertrinken) experimentell an Mäusen untersucht.
Notes: Summary The changes of the brain monoamines, norepinephrine (NE), dopamine (DA), and serotonin (5-HT), during acute asphyxia, caused by strangulation, anoxia, and drowning, were studied in the mouse. In several asphyxiated animal groups significant linear correlation was found between the level of monoamines, NE, DA, and 5-HT, and the death process times or antemortem times were r=0.50, 0.98 (P〈0.05), and 0.57, respectively. It is concluded that the level of brain NE and DA increased in the mouse that died of asphyxia, and the level of 5-HT showed only an apparent decrease in anoxia groups as compared with the control group and showed a twice as high increase in drowning groups. Especially, there was a tendency that the longer the death process times or antemortem times, the higher was the level of DA.

Notes: Summary The parotid gland and/or the submandibular gland in SIDS cases (180 from Berlin und 75 cases from Hamburg) were examined by means of HE staining, immunohistochemical analysis, in situ hybridization and electron microscopy. The SIDS cases were taken from the last 10 years; the age of the children ranged from 2 weeks to 1 year. Typical cytomegaly inclusion bodies were recognized in 10% (18 cases from Berlin; more girls than boys) and 7% (6 cases from Hamburg; more boys than girls). Our files indicate that the frequency of CMV infection was not age-dependent within the first 12 months of life. Using immunohistochemical analysis and in situ hybridization, virus substances were detected in cytomegal cells as well as in morphologically uninfected cells. The literature on the clinical and epidemiological aspects of cytomegaly indicates that a localized CMV infection of the salivary glands does not sufficiently explain the sudden death of these infants; however, it should be emphasized that cytomegaly can influence the immunological status of the organism.

Notes: Abstract Aromatization and isomerization of n- hexane catalyzed by Pt/zeolite were investigated. For Pt/K- β and Pt/K-mordenite as well as for Pt/K-L, the addition of KCl resulted in an increase in selectivity for benzene formation accompanied with a decrease in selectivity for hydroisomerization. A parallelism was found between changes in the benzene selectivity with the KCl addition and in the terminal cracking index. The treatment of Pt/K-FSM-16 with K2CO3 resulted in a decrease in cracking products and an increase in benzene selectivity. At 523 K, Pt/H- FSM-16 catalyst showed high selectivity for methylcyclopentane and cyclohexane. At 623 K, it showed high and durable isomerization activity.

Notes: Summary Although epidermal keratinocytes contain significant amounts of calmodulin, the exact role of calmodulin in epidermal biological activity remains to be determined. Pig-skin (epidermal) calmodulin was purified to homogeneity by DEAE/Sepharose- and phenothiazine-affinity-column chromatography. The characteristics of the purified calmodulin proved to be in good agreement with those of calmodulin obtained from other sources. Phenothiazines (trifluoperazine and chlorpromazine), mepacrine, propranolol, and colchicine inhibited the effect of the purified epidermal calmodulin on the calmodulin-deficient phosphodiesterase of bovine heart. These calmodulin antagonists all had inhibitory effects on the thymidine incorporation of pig-skin epidermal keratinocytes. These observations support the assumption that calmodulin might play an important role in epidermal keratinocyte proliferation.

Notes: Summary Various in vitro experiments were performed for the purpose of clarifying the mechanism of ethanol production in corpses. Whereas a negligible quantity of ethanol was produced in the blood alone, which was left at room temperature, the quantity of ethanol was slightly increased by addition of glucose to the blood. When saprogens were further added, the quantity was markedly increased. Various materials were added to blood-liver homogenates as specimens, and the mixtures were stored in an incubator at 37°C. As a result of the addition of an antibiotic to the mixture every day, there was hardly any production of ethanol. When alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) were added, ethanol production was slightly increased. When acetaldehyde was added first, ethanol production was inhibited the next day, but on and after day 2, the quantity of ethanol was more than that in the control material. When pyruvic acid was added first, the results were similar to the above. Pyrazole, cyanamide, and disulfiram completely inhibited the production of ethanol. Ethanol production in corpses is believed to take place through a pathway opposite to that of ethanol metabolism in the living body, under the influence of ADH, ALDH, etc., in saprogens using carbohydrates as substrates.

Notes: Abstract Among plants and herbivores, two types of conflicts occur in relation to mutualism with ants: one is competition for ant mutualism among myrmecophilous herbivores and plants, and the other is the conflict whether to attract or repel ants between myrmecophiles and nonmyrmecophiles that are damaged by ants. We investigated the extent to which two species of aphids (Megoura crassicauda and Aphis craccivora) and extrafloral nectaries on their host plant (Vicia faba var. minor) interact with one another for their relationships with ants. We designed an experiment where ants can choose to visit seedlings colonized by (1) M. crassicauda, (2) A. cracivora, (3) both aphid species, or (4) neither aphid species. Ants preferred A. craccivora to extrafloral nectaries and avoided tending M. crassicauda. We also analyzed the population growth of each aphid when it coexists with (1) ants, (2) the other aphid species, (3) ants and the other aphid species, or (4) neither of them. Under ant-free conditions, we detected an exploitative competition between the two aphid species. The ants had no significant effect on the population of A. craccivora, whereas they had negative effects on the population growth of M. crassicauda by attacking some individuals. When both aphids coexisted, M. crassicauda suffered ant attack more intensely because A. craccivora attracted more ants than extrafloral nectaries despite ant-repelling by M. crassicauda. On the other hand, the ants benefited A. craccivora by eliminating its competitor. To avoid ant attack, aphids may have been selected either to be more attractive to ants than other sympatric sugar sources or to repel the ants attracted to them. We hypothesize that competition among sympatric sugar sources including rival aphids and extrafloral nectaries is a factor restricting aphids to be myrmecophilous.

Notes: Summary Decreased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity has been reported in various hyperproliferative keratinocytes. In order to elucidate the relationship between epidermal SOD activity and keratinocyte proliferation, we employed in vivo UVB irradiation. Following UVB irradiation at twice the minimum erythema dose, pig epidermis revealed an initial decrease in thymidine incorporation and mitotic counts for at least 48 h, followed by a marked increase, the peak of which was observed at 96 h after irradiation, and a return to basal levels by 5–7 days. The SOD activity remained constant during the initial 48 h and then decreased to about 50% at 96 h, mainly due to a decresed Cu,Zn-SOD activity. Our results indicate that the increased keratinocyte proliferation induced by UVB irradiation is accompanied by a decrease in SOD activity, and that this decrease is mainly due to a decreased Cu,Zn-SOD activity. No alteration in SOD activity was noted during the initial hypoproliferative phase following irradiation.
