Notes: Summary In a total of 225 operations on the pancreas, Whipple's operation was performed a total of 60 times, as mere 79 pancreatic interventions for chronic calcifying pancreatitis : ventral partial resection by Puestow-Mercadier's method on 13 occasions, left resection 38 times, and right resection 28 times by Whipple's method. The indications for Whipple's operation in the basically benign diseases of the pancreas were phlegmonoses and abscess-forming and infected pseudocysts. The total lethality of Whipple's operation was 13.3 %, in the 28 cases with purulent inflammation of head of pancreas, 7.1 %.

Notes: Abstract We investigate the upper limiting behavior of the distance of the normalize trajectories of a Wiener process from Strassen's class. It is shown that the right rate is (log logT)−2/3, improving previous results by the author and by Goodman and Kuelbs.(2,3)

Notes: Abstract The theories for the rotational Brownian motion of molecules in liquids were experimentally verified on the example of selected fluorescent probe molecules dissolved in various solvents. Agreement between theories and experimental results as well as some disagreements between them were found. The model of a “coloured noise” random torque has been employed to diminish the discrepancy between the Hubbard-Morita model of rotational Brownian motion of molecules in liquids and the experimental data. A “mass drag” effect due to the existence of viscosity shear waves is taken into account in the explanation of inertial effects in molecular motion in liquids. The hypothesis of microviscosity has been confirmed in some experimental situations.

Notes: Abstract Interstitial deletions of the long arm of chromosome 5 del(5)(q), are recurring aberrations in the myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia. Several genes located in region (5)(q23–34) have been implicated as being of pathogenic importance. In this study seven samples of six patients with myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukemia who have the del(5)(q) aberration were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and Southern blot technique. FMS hemizygosity was demonstrated in all patients. PCR analysis from peripheral blood samples confirmed the observations of this aberration found by semiquantitative Southern blot. PCR-based analysis can be used for primary diagnosis in addition to cytogenetic evaluation and for follow-up in patients with del(5)(q) aberration.

Notes: Abstract Two siblings (male, 29 years, and female, 13 years) with the rare autosomal recessive osteoporosis pseudoglioma syndrome are reported in detail. All essential signs and symptoms of the full clinical picture were present and are documented by impressive X-ray pictures. Some aspects of our patients are compared with relevant findings of previous reports. Collagen studies (skin biopsies) failed to reveal any significant disorder of the main collagen types composition. Striking similarities with established genetic disorders of collagen (like the osteogenesis imperfecta group and the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome) suggest, however, that the OPS could be a primary collagen disorder. Genetic counselling and devoted socio-medical care for these handicapped children is presently the only help which can be offered.
