Notes: Summary A new chemically amplified polymeric imaging system based on polymers containingt-butylmalonate pendant groups has been demonstrated. Both the homopolymer of di-t-butyl (vinylbenzyl)benzylmalonate and its copolymer with styrene have been tested in coatings containing a photoacid generator. Imaging experiments confirm that the materials have very high sensitivities when exposed to UV radiation near 250nm.

Notes: Summary Highly branched aliphatic molecules have been used for the first time as tethers in the preparation of polymeric chiral stationary phases. Attachment of a specifically designed chiral selector to organic porous polymer beads through a branched linker substantially increases the enantioselectivity compared to that of the equivalent separation medium with a traditional linear tether.

Notes: Summary Sulfinate functional groups have been introduced on selected positions of the aromatic rings of soluble or crosslinked polystyrene via lithiation reactions followed by quenching with sulfur dioxide. The sulfinate polymers have good stability, can be stored at room temperature, and can be used for ion-exchange or as nucleophiles to produce polymer-bound sulfones. Good functional yields of polystyrene resins with sulfone pendant groups can be obtained by reaction of the polymeric sulfinates with various alkyl halides under phase transfer or classical conditions.

Notes: Summary Styrene polymers containing pendant p-vinyl or p-oxirane functionalities on some of their aromatic rings have been prepared in excellent yields by chemical modification of chloromethylated polystyrene or carboxaldehyde-substituted polystyrene under phase transfer catalysis. The polymers containing pendant vinyl groups were obtained by Wittig reactions with aqueous formaldehyde while the polymers with p-oxirane pendant groups were obtained by reaction of the carboxaldehyde polymer with trimethyl sulfonium chloride or epoxidation of the p-vinyl substituted polymer.

Notes: Summary A polymeric reagent, polystyryldiphenyl-phosphine tetrahydroborate copper, has been prepared by chemical modification of cross linked polystyrene using a fourstep reaction sequence involving a ligand exchange reaction for the binding of cuprous chloride to the phosphine resin. The reagent is very effective in the reduction of acid chlorides to aldehydes and can be regenerated easily without loss of activity.

Notes: Summary The use of hyperbranched aromatic epoxy polymer 2 (HARE) as a component in various adhesion experiments has been demonstrated. Two different modes of curing were tested, including a photoinitiated cationic curing process and a polyfunctional amine curing process. These processes gave flexible films that showed good adhesion to nylon, steel, and glass. Furthermore, blends of HARE and the commercial epoxy resin bisphenol F diglycidyl ether (BPFG) were cured with 2-ethyl-4-methylimidazole (EMI) at 150 °C on lap-shear assemblies. These cured assemblies displayed adhesive strengths in the range of 15 MPa over a broad range of HARE/BPFG weight ratios.

Notes: Summary Poly(methyl acrylate) was transformed into polymers containing α-substituted units by a two-step reaction sequence involving formation of a poly(enolate) by base abstraction of the hydrogens located α to the ester carbonyl groups, followed by reaction of the poly(enolate) with electrophiles such as carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, or ethyl bromoacetate. Further modification of the α-carboxylate or α-sulfinate polymers led to poly(acrylates) bearing α-methyl carboxylate, α-methyl sulfone, or α-(2-hydroxyethyl sulfone) functional groups. Quenching of the poly(enolate) with ethyl bromoacetate gave a polymer containing itaconate as well as acrylate units. In general, the degree of functionalization achieved was from 0.3 to 0.65.

Notes: Summary Two novel reactive polymers useful as protecting groups for hydroxyls have been prepared by copolymerization of a silicon containing monomer, 4-[3′-(dimethyl phenyl silyl)-propyl]-styrene, with styrene and divinylbenzene, followed by chemical modification of the resulting insoluble polymer beads. The polymeric reagents containing trialkylsilyl chloride or trialkylsilyl trifluoroacetate moieties are effective for the protection of alcohols and a procedure for their facile regeneration is described.

Notes: Abstract A novel approach to monodispersed porous polymer beads allowing accurate control over a broad range of pore size distribution has been developed. It involves the use of monodispersed template particles which are used as polymeric porogens in the suspension polymerization of monomers such as styrene and divinylbenzene. The size uniformity of the template particles is retained by the final porous beads. The porous properties of the final beads are determined in large part by the characteristics of the porogenic mixture such as its composition, the molecular weight of the polymeric porogen, as well as the relative amount of monomers, polymeric and low molecular weight porogens used.
