Notes: Summary Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate phosphomonoesterase was isolated and partially purified from wheat (Triticum aestivum L. var. Selkirk) leaves. The enzyme hadK NADP value of 1.4×10−4 M and a pH optimum of 5.9.In vitro activity of this enzyme was unaffected by precursors of NAD (nicotinamide and nicotinic acid) or cytokinis (kinetin and benzimidazole). However, when detached wheat leaves were treated with solutions of these compounds, the precursors lowered the specific activity while the cytokinins enhanced the activity. It is suggested that spatial separation and compartmentation of the enzyme and its substrate NADP account for the similar effect of benzimidazole on both.

Notes: Abstract Background: 5-HT3 antagonists are effective inreducing the acute nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy. However,it is not clear whether continuing these agents beyond twenty four hours isuseful in controlling emesis on days two to seven after chemotherapy. Patients and methods: Four hundred seven patients receivingmoderately emetogenic chemotherapy who had been given dexamethasone 8 mg i.v.and either ondansetron 32 mg i.v. or dolasetron 2.4 mg/kg i.v. were randomizedto continue either an oral form of their 5-HT3 antagonist(ondansetron 8 mg b.i.d. or dolasetron 200 mg daily) plus dexamethasone 8 mgp.o. daily or dexamethasone alone for days two to seven. Endpoints assessedby self-report were: 1) complete control (no vomiting, no rescue medications,no missing data) of emesis; 2) nausea severity; and 3) quality-of-life asmeasured by the EORTC QLQ-C30. Results: Continuation of 5-HT3 antagonists improvedslightly, but not significantly, the complete control rate (47% vs.41%; P = 0.24 one-sided) after chemotherapy. However, mean nauseaseverity was significantly (P = 0.015 one sided) reduced (by 3 mm on a10 cm scale) on the combined arm. Minimal differences in quality of life wereobserved. Conclusion: The benefit of continuing 5-HT3antagonists beyond 24 hours is modest and the merits of routine use in thesecircumstances debatable.

Notes: Summary The putrescine, spermidine, and spermine content of subcultured human newborn foreskin keratinocytes was determined during growth and early plateau phase and found to be highest during growth. Exposure of the cells to methylglyoxal bis(guanylhydrazone) during growth phase caused a dose-dependent fall in intracellular spermidine and spermine levels and an increase in putrescine levels at higher concentrations. These effects reflect inhibition of S-adenosyl methionine decarboxylase by the drug. At 8×10-6 M the drug reduced incorporation of leucine into protein, lowered or stopped the accumulation of DNA per dish, inhibited mitotic activity, and increased the histidine/leucine incorporation into protein. The last effect is regarded as induction of keratinization. All these effects were reversible if the use of the drug was discontinued after 3 days. Inhibition of the enzymes of polyamine biosynthesis may have value in psoriasis therapy.

Notes: Abstract GaAs MIS field effect transistors with a Ge3N4 dielectric gate have been investigated. No hysteresis loop and drain current drift has been observed in theI D -V Dcharacteristics. However, performance of the devices have been found to be limited by the contact resistance. FromI DS 1/2 -V G plot, the threshold voltage and effective channel mobility of the transistor have been obtained as -4.5V and 2800cm2v−1s−1, respectively. A maximum dc transconductance of 68 mS/mm of gate width has been achieved.

Notes: Summary SPARC (secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine), also known as osteonectin and BM-40, is a secreted protein associated with a variety of embryonic and adult tissue and cell types, including placenta, parietal and visceral endoderm, certain epithelia (e.g. gut, skin, glandular epithelia), and regions of active chondrogenesis and osteogenesis. Although much is known concerning the tissue distribution of this protein, neither the time and location of its initial appearance nor its functions during embryogenesis have been clearly established. We identified the location of SPARC on two-dimensional protein gels. By using two-dimensional gel analysis of both pre- and post-implantation stage mouse embryos, we find that SPARC is initially synthesized between 3.5 and 4.5 days of embryogenesis. This is the earliest time during development at which synthesis of SPARC has been demonstrated. Inner cell masses isolated from 4.5 day blastocysts synthesize SPARC indicating that either primitive ectoderm, primitive endoderm, or both produce this protein. SPARC synthesis is also detectable in isolated trophoblast vesicles. Thus, SPARC is synthesized not only in placenta, parietal endoderm, and visceral endoderm, but in the precursors of these tissues as well. Examination of 7.5 day embryos reveals that SPARC is synthesized in isolated parietal yolk sac and in whole extraembryonic and embryonic regions. Relative to other proteins, synthesis of SPARC was most prevalent in the parietal yolk sac. The possible implications of SPARC synthesis as early as 4.5 days are discussed.

Notes: Abstract  An 11-year-old boy in acute adrenal crisis was subsequently diagnosed with Addison’s disease and presumably had an unrecognized preceding chronic adrenal insufficiency. His adrenal insufficiency and hypovolemic shock were promptly diagnosed and treated in the emergency room. However, 24 h later, signs of congestive heart failure developed and an echocardiogram revealed cardiomyopathy. He responded to i.v. dopamine and his cardiomyopathy resolved over some days. Acute adrenal insufficiency and actual ventricular dysfunction had not been described in humans until last year; this is the second reported case of cardiomyopathy in a patient with acute adrenal insufficiency.

Notes: Abstract  Hydrothermal activity in the Central Bransfield Basin revealed an active low-temperature vent field on top of a submarine volcanic structure. A temperature anomaly was detected and the sea floor showed various patches of white silica (opal-A) precipitate exposures and some yellow–brown Fe-oxyhydroxide crusts. Enriched dissolved methane concentrations were encountered. Sediment was near 24°C just after the grab came on deck. No dense population of chemosynthetically based macrofauna known from other hydrothermal venting areas was present, except for pogonophora. The observations suggest that the sedimented hydrothermal field at Hook Ridge is a low-temperature end-member branch from a deeper hydrothermal source.
