    Notes: Abstract The absorption spectrum of Sii in the wavelength region 1500–1900 Å has been photographed at high resolution. The silicon vapour was produced in a 122 cm long King furnace at 1800–2300°C. Forty-two Rydberg series have been observed from the ground state terms 3p 2 3 P and1 D to terms associated with the 3pns and 3pnd configurations. All of the series from these configurations withJ〈4 have been extended with the 3pnd 3 D 3 o levels reachingn=56. Numerous perturbations have been observed. This laboratory work has provided the basis for extending the identification of silicon lines in the solar spectrum. Nearly all lines found in the laboratory spectrum are also found in rocket spectrograms of the solar chromosphere. More than 300 lines have been attributed to Sii. The excellent correlation between laboratory and solar Sii lines will be illustrated.

    Notes: Abstract The marine pseudomonad bacterium PL1 contains an intracellular pool of free amino acids which consist mainly of glutamate with small amounts of glutamine and aspartate when grown in a nutrient medium containing 0.2 M NaCl. When the NaCl concentration of the growth medium is increased to 0.8 M, proline becomes a major component of the intracellular pool together with glutamate—at this molarity and under suitable nutrient conditions these amino acids comprise 20% of total bacterial amino acid nitrogen. When grown in a nutrient growth medium containing a constant level of NaCl, the intracellular pool size can vary by a factor of 4 depending on the concentration of carbon and nitrogen in the medium. Experiments show that the amino acid pool can act as a nitrogen reserve but has little function as a carbon reserve. At high NaCl concentrations there is a marked dependence for growth on the presence of sufficient potassium in the medium. However, no correlation between K+ and glutamate concentration in either nitrogen or K+-limited cultures has been found. None of the enzymes associated with glutamate biosynthesis was influenced by NaCl levels between 0.2 and 0.5 M. Neither Na+ or K+ stimulated the activity of these enzymes when tested in vitro.

    Notes: Abstract Growth experiments in batch cultures indicated that the uptake of nitrate by the marine pseudomonad PL1 was inhibited in the presence of ammonia provided that the ammonia concentration was higher than 1 mM. At ammonia concentrations of less than about 1 mM, however, both nitrate and ammonia were utilised simultaneously. The saturation constants for nitrate and ammonia uptake were both 2.6x10-4 M, and similar to the Michaelis constants of nitrate reductase for nitrate (2.9x10-4 M) and glutamine synthetase for ammonia (2x10-4 M). Nitrate reductase activity linked to NADH was detected in chemostat-grown cultures with nitrate as nitrogen source, and in cultures containing limiting concentrations of nitrate and ammonia, ammonia or glutamate. Enzyme synthesis appeared to be repressed in cultures containing an excess of ammonia or glutamate. Chemostat cultures utilised ammonia or glutamate in preference to nitrate, while there was no marked preference between ammonia and glutamate.

    Notes: Abstract Thirty-three Standardbred foals received a physical examination and had blood drawn for anti-thrombin III (AT III), immunoglobulin G (IgG), and haemostasis evaluation between 24 and 72 h of age. Based on physical examination, a normal haemogram within reference intervals and serum IgG concentration 〉600 mg/dl, 19 foals remained in the study. AT III values for protein concentration (mg/dl) and activity (mg/dl and percentage thrombin inhibition) were determined by rocket immunoelectrophoresis and chromogenic substrate assay, respectively, and compared to the reference intervals for adults. In 19 healthy, full-term foals, the mean plasma AT III activity for percentage thrombin inhibition (75.9%), mean amount of active AT III (19.2 mg/dl) and the mean plasma AT III concentration (28.7 mg/dl) were significantly (P〈0.05) lower than the reference interval of adult values. The mean active AT III concentration for both foals (19.2 mg/dl) and adults (24.6 mg/dl) was significantly (P〈0.05) less than their AT III concentration, 28.7 and 44.3 mg/dl, respectively. Fibrinogen degradation products (FDPs) were increased in 100% of the foals, with 12 of 19 (63%) having FDPs 〉10 〈40 μg/dl). Platelet count, prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time and fibrinogen did not differ significantly from those of adult values. These findings support the view that haemostasis in the full term foal is characterised as a hypercoagulable state by the significant decrease in plasma AT III activity and concentration and increase in split products of fibrin and fibrinogen.

    Notes: Abstract An extensively updated version of the EQUIL software is described. The former version, designated EQUIL2, is widely used to study urolithiasis and related areas of biomineralization. In this report, we discuss recent enhancements which give EQUIL93 an expanded scope of application. This program has been frequently used in studies of the physicochemical processes underlying stone salt crystallization, especially crystal growth and nucleation, but it has also been employed as an aid for in vivo research and as an evaluator of therapeutic measures. We illustrate several new applications, including some outside the urologic realm, and we discuss how the enhanced software can be helpful in stone risk assessments.

    Notes: Abstract The problem of the kinetic depth effect is revisited. We study how many points in how many views are necessary and sufficient to recover structure. The constraints in the cases where the velocities of the image points are known, and the positions of the image points are known with the correspondence between them established, are different and they have to be studied separately. In the case of two projections of any number of points there are infinitely many solutions, but if we regularize the problem we get a unique solution under some assumptions. Finally, an algorithm is discussed for learning this particular kind of regularization.

    Notes: Abstract Glutamine synthetase (GS) activity of Schizosaccharomyces pombe 972 was high in ammonia-limited cultures, low in phosphate-and sulphate-limited cultures and not detected in glucose-limited cultures. When ammonia was ‘pulsed’ into an ammonia-limited culture then GS activity decreased at a rate faster than that calculated if enzyme synthesis ceased and enzyme was diluted out by growth. Enzyme activity increased in ammonia-starved, phosphate-limited cultures and in the ammonia ‘pulse’ system when the added ammonia had been utilised. These increases in enzyme activity were prevented by the presence of 100 μg/ml cycloheximide. GS activity was inversely related to the intracellular concentration of glutamate.

    Notes: Abstract The isolation of biologically important low molecular weight organic acids from organically enriched sediments in Loch Eil, Scotland, was carried out by extraction of pore water with acidified ethyl acetate. High concentrations of acetic acid, up to 1.8 mg g-1 dry weight of sediment were found at Station E-24. Propionate, butyrate, valerate, lactate and traces of succinate were also found. Succinate was present in significant amounts, 42.2 μg g-1 dry weight of sediment at Station E-70, which received a higher input of organic matter than E-24. Both propionate and succinate were absent from a control station in the Lynn of Lorne where the sediment was low in carbon compared with Loch Eil. In experimental tanks, acetate levels increased as the input of organic carbon (as cellulose) was increased up to a load level of 1.5 g m-2 day-1. Above this, acetate decreased and succinate appeared. Succinate was not detected in low-loaded tanks. Experiments with sieved mud showed a vertical distribution of the different acids with depth. Lactate and succinate reached highest concentration in the 0 to 3 cm layer, acetate at 3 to 6 cm and propionate at 6 to 9 cm. The results are discussed in relation to the role of these acids as food sources and as indicators of biochemical pathways taking place in sediments with different carbon input levels.
