    Notes: Summary Changes in coping skills and problem-solving skills were examined in two groups of schizophrenic patients. The groups received either coping skills enhancement or problem-solving treatments to reduce their drugresistant residual psychotic symptoms. The coping skills group showed significant increases both in the number of positive coping strategies used and in their efficacy, whereas the problem-solving group showed a decrease in these measures during treatment. Both groups showed significant improvements in problem-solving skills. Changes in coping but not problem solving were significantly related to decreases in psychotic symptoms during treatment. It was concluded that treatment involving the teaching of coping skills had a specific treatment effect.

    Notes: Abstract The prism-coupler technique is used to investigate changes in the refractive index of PolyMethylMethAcrylate (PMMA) waveguide films exposed to low fluence KrF-laser radiation. A small (∼0.5%) but significant increase in index for light at 632.8 nm is observed following prolonged exposure, probably due to photochemical modification of the polymer. Weak etching of films is also evident even at a fluence as low as 6 mJ cm−2.

    Notes: Abstract Our level of understanding of peroxisome biogenesis in comparison with other cellular organelles is rudimentary, yet the fragments of information available indicate that the targeting and import of peroxisomal proteins occur by fundamentally different mechanisms. Genetic studies have identified a number of genes required for peroxisome assembly, but in most cases the functions of the gene products remain unknown. In vitro protein translocation systems have played a prominent role in unravelling the biochemistry of protein translocation into other organelles. This review considers some of the requirements for establishing a bona fide peroxisomal import assay and discusses the findings which have emerged as a result of using such experimental systems.

    Notes: Abstract Objective: While “weaning parameters” are commonly used to guide removal of mechanical ventilation devices, little information exists concerning their prognostic value. We evaluated whether passing weaning parameters was associated with survival. Design: A prospectively followed cohort of mechanically ventilated patients. Setting: Medical and coronary adult intensive care units of an 806-bed medical center. Patients: 300 consecutively enrolled mechanically ventilated patients. Measurements and results: 216 patients who passed a daily screen of weaning parameters were more likely to be extubated successfully (87 vs 30 %, p = 0.0001), less likely to require ventilation for 〉 21 days (3 vs 30 %, p = 0.0001), and had a higher survival to hospital discharge (74 vs 29 %, p = 0.0001) than 84 patients who never passed the screen. The overall accuracy of the daily screen for predicting successful extubation and in-hospital survival was 82 and 73 %, respectively. Multivariate proportional hazards analysis of time until hospital death confirmed the beneficial effect of passing the daily screen (p = 0.01) and of duration of mechanical ventilation (p = 0.001) even after adjustment for differences in severity of illness, age, race, gender, diagnosis, and treatment assignment. While liberation from mechanical ventilation was predictive of survival at any time during the hospital stay (p = 0.001), the prognostic significance of the daily screen for hospital survival was related to how early after intubation it was passed. The difference in survival between patients who had passed and those who had not passed the daily screen was significant for 11/2 weeks post-intubation but progressively decreased over time. The average time to extubation after passing the daily screen increased from 3 days (range 0 to 56), for those passing within 5 days of intubation, to 8 days (0 to 35), for those passing after 10 days of intubation (r = 0.26, p = 0.001). Conclusions: Passing a daily screen of weaning parameters is an independent predictor of successful extubation and survival, but its prognostic value decreases over time. Time spent on mechanical ventilation after passing the daily screen presents an important opportunity to optimize liberation from the ventilator.

    Notes: Abstract This study examines the impacts of woody, N2-fixing invasive Acacia spp. on the patterns of nutrient cycling in two invaded ecosystems of differing nutrient status in the Cape floristic region. Patterns of soil nutrient mineralization were measured by a field incubation method while the significance of the fixation process in altering nutrient cycling was assessed by the δ15N natural abundance technique. The results confirm earlier reports that invasion by woody shrubs results in organic matter and nutrient enrichment of surface soils of both ecosystems. However, patterns of nutrient availability (phosphorus and nitrogen) were not necessarily enhanced. In the more fertile strandveld both phosphorus and nitrogen (significant at P〈0.10) showed trends towards enhanced annual mineralization rates upon invasion, while in the low nutrient fynbos system only phosphorus followed this trend. It is unclear whether this differential response is a consequence of plant- or soil-derived feedbacks on the decomposition processes in each system. The δ15N values of the soils from the invaded sites of both ecosystems indicated a strong influence of the alien species on the soil nitrogen component. However, as with other studies of natural ecosystems, the contribution of nitrogen from fixation could not be readily quantified with the δ15N natural abundance method because of problems in selecting suitable non-N2-fixing reference plants. A technique of disrupting nodule structure and function, by fumigation with O2, to obtain the δ15N value of a non-N2-fixing speciment of the study species was tried and found to overcome some of the problems associated with the lack of suitable reference plants. With this technique it was possible to detect the almost total dependence of A. saligna on N2-fixation in the fynbos soils with their low nitrogen mineralization rates. In the strandveld ecosystem with much higher soil nitrogen release rates A. cyclops was only partly dependent on fixation (about half) for its nitrogen. The nutrient enrichment of both ecosystems and trends towards enhanced rates of nutrient mineralization could have profound implications on the long-term success of alien invader clearing operations and the restoration of the indigenous flora at these sites.
