Notes: Abstract A series of trials from 1981–85 investigating the amount of damage caused by larvae of the turnip root flyDelia floralis (Fallen) to cultivars of Swedish turnipBrassica Napus (L.) of varying percentages of dry matter indicated that those of high dry matter were damaged less than low dry matter cultivars. Pupal numbers of turnip root fly gave good correlations with damage but there was no relationship between damage and cabbage root fly pupae.

Notes: Abstract Octamethylcyclo-di(meta-silphenylenesiloxane) 1 (cyclic meta-dimer) was synthesized from 1,3-bis(dimethylhydroxysilyl)benzene 7 in a dilute THF solution, in the presence of a catalytic amount of 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP). In contrast, only small amounts of the cyclic meta-dimer 1, cyclic meta-trimer 2, cyclic meta-tetramer, etc. were obtained when the condensation reaction was carried out with the catalyst n-hexylamine 2-ethylhexoate or sodium hydroxide. The major product in these reactions is polymer 8. The structure of compound 1 was confirmed by X-ray crystallography. This cyclic molecule is most likely unstrained since the X-ray structure reveals that the Si–O–Si bond angle is 142.1(1)° which is similar to that in most unstrained siloxane compounds.

Notes: Abstract Artificial satellites whose mean motion is commensurable with the rotation of the Earth are subject to resonance effects arising from the slight longitude-dependence of the geopotential. Previous papers have discussed this problem where one or other of the eccentricity or inclination is sufficiently small that it can be considered to be zero. The situation for orbits which are both inclined and eccentric is in general more complicated, but again becomes relatively simple near the critical inclination since the argument of perigee is approximately constant. The particular example of 12-hr orbits is discussed in some detail; it is of special interest since the U.S.S.R. has now launched twelve Molniya 1 satellites in highly eccentric 12-hr orbits at about 65o inclination, and eight of these have had at least partially stabilished ground tracks. It is shown that the gravity coefficientJ 2, 2 becomes dominant whene exceeds ∼ 0.05, taking over fromJ 3, 2 which is in control fore=0. The appropriate resonant variable is of the novel form∏ 1,2=M + 2 (Ω−not) which does not seem capable of physical or geometrical interpretation. This description is valid over a wide range of eccentricity (e〉0.15) and a fairly wide range of inclination (50o〈I〈90o) and is illustrated by the behaviour of Molniyas 1J and 1K.

Notes: Abstract This paper presents, for bivariate distributions, a unified framework for studying and relating three basic concepts of positive dependence. These three concepts are positive dependence orderings, positive dependence properties and measures of positive dependence. The latter two concepts are formally defined and their properties discussed. Interrelationships among these three concepts are given, and numerous examples are presented.

Notes: Abstract Several characterizations of multivariate stable distributions together with a characterization of multivariate normal distributions and multivariate stable distributions with Cauchy marginals are given. These are related to some standard characterizations of marcinkiewicz.

Notes: Abstract Using transverse and longitudinal excitation of a collimated metastable Ne(3s 3 P 2.0) beam with average velocities of 500, 800, and 1,200 m/s by means of a single mode dye laser on the20Ne(3s 3 P 2→3p 3 D 3) transition, we have investigated ionizing collisions of polarized Ne(3s 3 P 2) and Ne(3p 3 D 3) atoms with Ar atoms. The product electrons were energy analyzed with high resolution (9–25 meV). The resulting Ne(3p 3 D 3) electron spectra exhibit a strong dependence on the three types of laser polarization (π ∥,π⊥, σ⥮), chosen to prepare the excited atoms. In contrast, the Ne(3s 3 P 2) spectra are only weakly dependent on polarization. Detailed model calculations have been carried out for the Ne(3p)+Ar cross sections, using computed excited-state potential curves, semi-empirical ionic potentials, and local autoionization width functions. A semiclassical closecoupling method is applied to describe the evolution of the polarized collision system in the coupled entrance channels. It is found that a single autoionization widthΓ(R) is not sufficient to describe the measured polarization effects properly. The dependence ofΓ on the initial and final state is expressed in terms of few reduced electronic transition matrix elements, which are determined by comparison of measured and calculated total cross sections and Ar+(2 P 3/2)/Ar+(2 P 1/2) branching ratios for ionizing collisions of the various Ne(3pJ=1,2,3) multiplet states with Ar. The matrix elements corresponding to Ar(3pσ)→Ne(2pσ) electron transfer during autoionization are found to dominate, but Ar(3pπ)→Ne(2pπ) transfer has also to be included. The resulting calculated electron spectra reproduce the measured polarization effects in a semi-quantitative way.

Notes: Abstract We examine the relative utility of the Landau-Zener, phase integral, and semiclassical Magnus approximations for processes involving a real crossing of two potential curves. As an example we consider rotational coupling in Na 2 + . Numerical calculations for the ¦3p〉→¦3s〉 quenching process and for ¦3p〉→¦3d〉 excitation agree well with recent experiments in the energy range 20 eV≦EK≦50 eV. Simple expressions forS-matrix elements, differential and total cross sections in these approximations depend only on accurate evaluation of a few JWKB phases. For the total cross section further simplification of the Magnus results yields a useful semiempirical formula.

Notes: Abstract Two hundred and two patients with Crohn's disease have been examined during the year 1984 to assess the frequency of perianal disease. One hundred and ten have had evidence of perianal complications (54%). In 30% of patients with perianal disease, the anal manifestations preceded any evidence of intestinal disease. Perianal disease was associated with pain in only 39%. Operations for perianal disease rarely achieved healing and were frequently associated with complications. Attempts to lay open a fistula-in-ano caused healing in only one of 12 cases and 6 developed incontinence. A high proportion of patients with Crohn's ulcers and strictures required proctectomy (87%). Proctectomy was performed in 27 patients with perianal disease of whom only 8 (30%) had primary healing of the proctectomy wound compared with complete healing in all 9 patients having a proctectomy without perianal disease (p 〈 0.01). These results imply that patients with perianal Crohn's disease should be treated conservatively and that proctectomy, particularly in patients with rectal strictures, is associated with very high incidence of persistent perineal sinus.
