    Notes: Abstract In this study, we investigate systematically the role played by the reproductive number (the number of secondary infections generated by an infectious individual in a population of susceptibles) on single group populations models of the spread of HIV/AIDS. Our results for a single group model show that if R ⩽ 1, the disease will die out, and strongly suggest that if R 〉 1 the disease will persist regardless of initial conditions. Our extensive (but incomplete) mathematical analysis and the numerical simulations of various research groups support the conclusion that the reproductive number R is a global bifurcation parameter. The bifurcation that takes place as R is varied is a transcritical bifurcation; in other words, when R crosses 1 there is a global transfer of stability from the infection-free state to the endemic equilibrium, and vice versa. These results do not depend on the distribution of times spent in the infectious categories (the survivorship functions). Furthermore, by keeping all the key statistics fixed, we can compare two extremes: exponential survivorship versus piecewise constant survivorship (individuals remain infectious for a fixed length of time). By choosing some realistic parameters we can see (at least in these cases) that the reproductive numbers corresponding to these two extreme cases do not differ significantly whenever the two distributions have the same mean. At any rate a formula is provided that allows us to estimate the role played by the survivorship function (and hence the incubation period) in the global dynamics of HIV. These results support the conclusion that single population models of this type are robust and hence are good building blocks for the construction of multiple group models. Our understanding of the dynamics of HIV in the context of mathematical models for multiple groups is critical to our understanding of the dynamics of HIV in a highly heterogeneous population.

    Notes: Abstract  We report the sequences of 17 primer pairs of microsatellite loci, which we have cloned and sequenced from two genomic libraries of peach [Prunus persica (L) Batsch] ‘Redhaven’, enriched for AC/GT and AG/CT repeats respectively. For ten of these microsatellite loci we were able to demonstrate Mendelian inheritance in a segregating back-cross population; the remainder did not segregate. The polymorphism of the microsatellites was evaluated in a panel of ten peach genotypes, including true-to-type peaches, nectarines and one canning-peach. Fifteen microsatellites (88%) were polymorphic showing 2–4 alleles each. The mean heterozygosity, averaged over all loci, was 0.32 and significantly higher than that reported in the literature for isozymes and molecular markers, such as RFLPs and RAPDs. We have also assayed the cross-species transportability and found that ten microsatellite (59%) gave apparently correct amplification in all Prunus species surveyed, namely P. domestica (European plum), P. salicina (Japanese plum), P. armeniaca (apricot), P. dulcis (almond), P. persica var. vulgaris (peach), P. persica var. laevis (nectarine), P. avium (sweet cherry) and P. cerasus (sour cherry), with three of them also being amplified in Malus (apple). The remaining microsatellites gave less-extensive amplification. Because of their appreciable polymorphism and wide cross-species transportability, most of these new markers can be integrated into the linkage maps which are currently being constructed in peach, as well as in other stone fruit crops, such as almond, apricot, cherry and plum.

    Notes: Abstract. This paper explores a method of manipulating a planar rigid part on a conveyor belt using a robot with just one joint. This approach has the potential of offering a simple and flexible method for feeding parts in industrial automation applications. In this paper we develop a model of this system and of a variation which requires no sensing. We have been able to characterize these systems and to prove that they can serve as parts feeding devices for planar polygonal parts. We present the planners for these systems and describe our implementations.

    Notes: Abstract. Oxygen-derived free radical injury has been associated with several cytopathic conditions. Oxygen radicals produced by chondrocytes is an important mechanism by which chondrocytes induce matrix degradation. In the present study, we extend these observations by studying oxidative processes against osteoblasts. Osteoblasts were mixed in in vitro culture with 200 μM menadione. The cytotoxic effect of menadione-induced oxidative stress was monitored by lucigenin- or luminol-amplified chemiluminescence, tetrazolium assay and immunocytochemical study. Results showed that adding menadione induces an oxidative stress on osteoblasts, via superoxide and hydrogen peroxide production, that can be eradicated by superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase in a dose-dependent manner. Catalase and the appropriate concentration of dimethyl sulfoxide have a protective effect on cytotoxicity induced by menadione, whereas SOD does not. Menadione-treated osteoblasts have a strong affinity for annexin V, and the nuclei are strongly stained by TUNEL (TdT-mediated dUTP nick-end labelling). The results suggest that menadione-triggered production of reactive oxygen species leads to apoptosis of osteoblasts.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of dopaminergic receptor inhibitors such as thiothixine (D1/D2), fluphenazine (D1/D2), trifluoperazine (D1/D2), pimozide (D2), flupenthixol (D1/D2), (+/−)-SKF 83566 (D1), and spiperone (D2) on splenic natural killer (NK) cell cytotoxic activities were assessed in vitro using mouse spleen lymphocytes or enriched NK cells. Both the activities of the splenic NK cell cytotoxicity and the effector-target cell conjugation were suppressed by thiothixine, fluphenazine, and trifluoperazine at concentrations from 2.64 to 14.78 μM. In addition, the augmentation of the cytolytic activity of NK cells induced by interferon-α or interleukin-2 was antagonized by pretreatment with these neuroleptic compounds. However, neither the splenic NK cell cytotoxicity nor the effector-target cell conjugation were affected by treatment with other neuroleptic compounds such as pimozide, flupenthixol, (+/−)-SKF 83566, and spiperone. Thus, it appears that neuroleptic compounds such as thiothixine, fluphenazine, and trifluoperazine may act through the mechanisms other than a dopaminergic pathway to affect the NK cell-target cell interaction.

    Notes: Abstract A simple, sensitive, non-stimulated assay was developed to measure the superoxide anion concentration in whole blood, using an ultra-sensitive chemiluminescence (CL) analyzer, and lucignin amplification. The assay system can be performed without leukocyte isolation or stimulant administration. The blood CL levels of healthy males (362.8±337.7 counts/10 sec) were not different from those of females (335±308.7 counts/10 sec) (p=0.64), whereas the CL levels in whole blood in patients with acute pancreatitis (2522±2014 counts/10 sec) were significantly higher than those of healthy controls (p〈0.001). This assay system may be valuable in the future for quantitative measurement of reactive oxygen species in various disorders.

    Notes: Abstract Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are synthesized by many bacteria as inclusion bodies, and their biodegradability and structural diversity have been studied with a view to their potential application as biodegradable materials. In this paper, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) was used to carry out rapid qualitative analysis of PHA in intact bacterial cells. The FT-IR spectra of pure PHA containing short-chain-length monomers, such as hydroxybutyrate (HB), medium-chain-length hydroxyalkanoate (mclHA) monomers including hydroxyoctanoate (HO) and hydroxydecanoate (HD), or both HB and mclHA monomers, showed their strong characteristic band at 1728 cm−1, 1740 cm−1 or 1732 cm−1 respectively. Other accompanying bands near 1280 cm−1 and 1165 cm−1 helped identify the types of PHA. The intensity of the methylene band near 2925 cm−1 provided additional information for PHA characterization. In comparison, bacterial cells accumulating the above PHA also showed strong marker bands at 1732 cm−1, 1744 cm−1 or 1739 cm−1, corresponding to intracellular PHB, mclPHA and P(HB + mclHA) respectively. The accompanying bands visible in pure PHA were also observable in the intact cells. The FT-IR results were further confirmed by gas chromatography analysis.

    Notes: Abstract Ratios of coincidence counting rates of annihilation gammas at 0 and 10m rad were measured for 16 atomic percentages of indium in liquid mercury. Theory of trapping of positrons at solute atoms and solute-vacancy complexes is applied. Complete angular correlation measurements for 14.3, 25, 35, and 50 atomic percentages of indium were also made and showed possible effects of solute-vacancy complexes on the smearing of the angular correlation distributions.

    Notes: Abstract Muscovite-granite was reacted in cold-seal pressure vessels at 2 kbar and in pistoncylinder apparatus between 10 and 35 kbar, with just 0.6 weight per cent water structurally bound in 14 modal per cent muscovite, and with additional water contents varying to 50 weight per cent. Phase relationships are presented through the melting interval with excess water, and with no free water added. Selected reactions above 10 kbars have been successfully reversed. An isobar at 15 kbar shows the effect of varying water contents on the mineral phase boundaries for vapor-present and vapor-absent conditions. For the dry rock, temperatures for the solidus and liquidas (quartz-out) curves, respectively, are 10 kbar-760° C, 1160° C; 15 kbar-810° C, 1220° C; 25 kbar-880° C; 1340° C; 35 kbar-1040° C, 1460° C. The solidus curve corresponds to the melting of muscovite + quartz. With water vapor present, the solidus is considerably lower, 15 kbar-610° C, 25 kbar-665° C. Water solubility in the liquid at 15 kbar is 24±3 weight per cent. Maximum temperatures for quartz and feldspars in the vapor-absent region decrease considerably with increasing water content. Temperatures for the quartz-out curve at 15 kbars are 0.6 % H2O-1230° C; 24 % H2O-760° C. At 15 kbars for low water contents, water-undersaturated liquid coexists with quartz and feldspars through hundreds of degrees. Subducted pelagic sediments which metamorphosed to muscovitebearing quartzo-feldspathic rocks would undergo two episodes of melting, beginning at different depths: (1) the first liquid dissolves all pore fluid, and transports it away when it escapes from the crystalline host, (2) reaction of muscovite yields a second liquid, with less dissolved water. According to two published thermal models for a lithosphere slab dipping at 45°, the depths would be (a) 60 km and 92 km, or (b) 17 km and 21 km. Magmas generated by partial fusion in subducted oceanic crust are cooler than the overlying crustal layers and the mantle above the slab by as much as 200° C to 300° C. This must lead to intrusion of relatively cool magma into hot rock. Consequent heating of the magma increases its prospects of reaching high levels in the upper mantle or crust before it solidifies by crossing the solidus curve.
