    Notizen: Summary Macroinvertebrate grazers and temporal variability were found to strongly influence species composition of communities that developed subtidally on plexiglas panels. On panels exposed to the naturally high densities of sea urchins and sea stars, only grazer-resistant algal crusts, a diatom/blue-green algal film and short-lived filamentous algae became abundant. On those panels protected from grazers, however, other algae and sessile invertebrates were also common. Both the effects of grazing and the abundance of individual taxa differed on panels immersed at different times of the year. Resident species also affected subsequent recruitment. Some colonists were found more frequently on panels with established communities than on recently immersed plates. Others became more abundant on younger than on older panels. Considerable small-scale spatial variation in the abundance of species was also found among panels within treatments and appeared to persist throughout the 13 months of the study. I suggest that since the interactions that determine which mechanisms are important in succession occur between individuals (generalized here to species), not between successional stages, factors such as those examined that can determine which species will interact, indirectly determine the mechnaisms that are important in the development of a community. Models that deal with interactions between successional stages may lack the detail neccessary to predict or explain changes in species composition in diverse communities.

    Notizen: Synopsis Field observations and collections indicate that the naked goby, Gobiosoma bosci, undergoes a near-bottom schooling phase prior to settlement. The size of these demersal larvae was intermediate between the sizes of larvae collected in plankton tows and of metamorphosed juveniles collected from the benthos. Two larvae that were captured unharmed quickly settled and metamorphosed. Otoliths of demersal larvae contained 20–41 daily increments. Most larvae were in schools made up of at least 25 individuals although single larvae were also seen. The dispersion pattern of demersal larvae was far more aggregated than that of recently settled juveniles indicating that larvae in schools probably do not settle to the benthos en masse.

    Notizen: Abstract We conducted a joint experimental research and modeling study to develop a methodology for assessing selenium (Se) toxicity in aquatic ecosystems. The first phase of the research focused on Se cycling and accumulation. In the laboratory, we measured the rates and mechanisms of accumulation, transformation, and food web transfer of the various chemical forms of Se that occur in freshwater ecosystems. Analytical developments helped define important Se forms. We investigated lower trophic levels (phytoplankton and bacteria) first before proceeding to experiments for each successive trophic component (invertebrates and fish). The lower trophic levels play critical roles in both the biogeochemical cycling and transfer of Se to upper trophic levels. The experimental research provided the scientific basis and rate parameters for a computer simulation model developed in conjunction with the experiments. The model includes components to predict the biogeochemical cycling of Se in the water column and sediments, as well as the accumulation and transformations that occur as Se moves through the food web. The modeled processes include biological uptake, transformation, excretion, and volatilization; oxidation and reduction reactions; adsorption; detrital cycling and decomposition processes; and various physical transport processes within the water body and between the water column and sediments. When applied to a Se-contaminated system (Hyco Reservoir), the model predicted Se dynamics and speciation consistent with existing measurements, and examined both the long-term fate of Se loadings and the major processes and fluxes driving its biogeochemical cycle.
