Notes: Summary Mice injected with tetanus toxin (TTx) showed an increase of 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin, 5-HT) levels in the central nervous system. The increment was not uniform thoughout the central nervous system. Particularly significant were the 25% and 80% increases observed, respectively, in whole brain and spinal cord. The levels of dopamine and norepinephrine remained unchanged. The subsequent studies of 5-HT turnover revealed a synthesis rate in the tetanic animals that was almost double that of controls. The degradation rate of the amine as well as the levels of 5-hydroxyindolacetic acid were unaffected.

Notes: Abstract Meiotic and karyotypic analyses of six populations of two closely related species belonging to the section Eusideritis of the genus Sideritis (five of S. saetabensis and one of S. tragoriganum) (Lamiaceae), revealed polymorphisms for asymmetric reciprocal translocations. Two populations of S. saetabensis (S-046 and S-089) and the population of S. tragoriganum (S-056) contained heterozygotes and standard homozygotes. No homozygotes for the rearrangement (dicentric) were found. The meiotic behavior of the heterozygotes showed great stability of the dicentric chromosomes in both species due to strict control of meiosis at three levels: (1) chiasma formation, (2) multivalent coorientation at metaphase I, (3) dicentric chromatid separation at anaphase II. During mitosis there may also be strict control of dicentric chromatid separation through 100% parallel separation without interlocking. This stable polymorphism for asymmetric reciprocal translocations is a unique phenomenon that seems to be maintained by over-dominance, thus being a special case of linkage disequilibrium. We give two alternative hypotheses to explain the origin of these polymorphisms and discuss their evolutionary significance.

Notes: Abstract Although 6 bp-restriction endonucleases infrequently cut DNA, we describe in this paper the banding pattern induced by one of them, StuI (AGGCCT), on fixed human chromosomes. This enzyme is the first 6 bp-restriction endonuclease demonstrated to be able to digest human heterochromatin. It causes the extraction of two families of repeated DNA, the alpha satellite DNA and the 3.4 kb HaeIII family (DYZ1). On the other hand, digestions with StuI and with another two enzymes, HinfI and RsaI, have established the distribution of sequences within the heterochromatic block of chromosome 3.

Notes: Abstract The effects of solar radiation on photosynthetic oxygen production, pulse amplitude-modulated (PAM) fluorescence and pigmentation were measured in the Mediterranean brown macroalgaPadina pavonica (Linnaeus) Lamouroux under field conditions and natural sunlight. Exposure of thalli to solar radiation for 1 h caused a dramatic decrease of their photosynthetic quantum yield, which recovered to initial levels after they had been placed in the shade for 3 h. Photoinhibition also occurred at the natural growth site ofP. pavonica during the hours of maximal solar irradiance. Photosynthetic oxygen production was also affected by high levels of solar radiation both in algae harvested from the surface and from 6 m depth; oxygen production started to decrease after a few minutes of exposure, and negative values were found after 1 h of solar exposure. Chlorophylla content inP. pavonica also decreased during the hours of maximal solar irradiation. These results suggest that photoinhibition ofP. pavonica occurs during part of a typical summer day on Mediterranean coasts.

Notes: Abstract Six closely related taxa of the sect.Eusideritis of the genusSideritis (S. leucantha, S. pusilla, S. flavovirens, S. granatensis, S. biflora andS. osteoxylla) are analysed to elucidate their phylogenetic relationships and position within the sect.Eusideritis. Meiotic behaviour, karyotype features, size and fertility of pollen grains, DNA amounts and seed protein profiles are reviewed. A polyploid origin of the group (from x = 7) and the further diversification through dysploidy and chromosome repatterning is postulated.S. osteoxylla is apparently of hybrid origin.

Notes: Summary Arrested BALB/c 3T3 cells were induced to the G0-G1 transition by fetal calf serum (FCS) and S phase entry was measured by [3H]thymidine incorporation as an index of DNA synthesis. [3H]Thymidine uptake was proportional to FCS concentration. Ascorbate (ASC) itself was unable to increase DNA synthesis in these cells but potentiated it in the presence of both 1% and 10% FCS. [3H]Thymidine uptake profile was similar with and without ASC, and showing at 24 h an ASC stimulation of 69% in the presence of 1% FCS and 58% with 10% FCS. These data are discussed in reference to the participation of ASC on plasma membrane energization for membrane translocations and transport.

Notes: Summary Ascorbate is stabilized in the presence of HL-60 cells. Our results showed that cAMP derivatives and agents that increase cAMP stimulate the ability of HL-60 cells to stabilize ascorbate. On the other hand, tunicamycin, a glycosilation-interfering agent, inhibited this ability. The ascorbate stabilization in the presence of HL-60 cells has been questioned as a simple chemical effect. Further properties and controls about the enzymatic nature of this stabilization are described and discussed. This data, together with hormonal regulation, support the hypothesis that an enzymatic redox system located at the plasma membrane is responsible of the extracellular ascorbate stabilization by HL-60 cells.

Notes: Summary HL-60 cells were induced to differentiate by exposure to TPA or 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (calcitriol). Induction with TPA was in parallel with a modulation of transmembrane redox system. After addition of 2 ng/m1 TPA, transient increases in ferricyanide reductase activity, NAD(H) intracellular levels and short-term response of NAD(H) to 0.4 mM ferricyanide were observed. The role of ascorbate on the differentiation induced by calcitriol also was studied. When HL-60 cells were exposed to 10−8 M calcitriol in the presence of 0.2 mM ascorbate, specific differentiation markers as NBT reduction or surface antigen CD11b increased significantly with respect to values obtained from treatments with calcitriol alone.

Notes: Abstract The meiotic behaviour abnormalities, fertility and size of pollen of 6 taxa ofSesamoides have been analysed. Besides diploids (2x), polyploids (4x, 6x, 8x) have been found. The chromosome base number is x = 10, but an origin from x = 5 is suggested.

Notes: Abstract We have found two chromosome levels (n = 10 and n = 20) in Spanish species ofReseda sect.Leucoreseda, four species on the first (R. undata, R. paui, R. suffruticosa, R. barrelieri), only one on the second level (R. alba). As already the species with n = 10 apparently behave as polyploids, we propose x = 5 as the original basic chromosome number for this section. The seed protein profile ofR. alba (2n = 40) reveals close relationships withR. undata (2n = 20), while the esterase isozymes suggest affinities withR. paui (2n = 20). Thus,R. alba can be regarded either as an autopolyploid fromR. paui or more likely as an allopolyploid fromR. paui andR. undata. Finally, the DNA values suggest a diploidization process inR. alba since its origin.
