    Notes: Abstract The reactivity of substituted acetophenones towards polyacrylonitrile radical has been correlated with Swain and Luptons field and resonance parameters inclusive of the unique positional weighting factors suggested by Williams and Norrington. From the sign and magnitude of the reaction dependent regression constants, the transition state has been found to be essentially ‘non-polar’ in character.

    Notes: Abstract Solvent effects on the lowest-energy electronic transitions of two merocyanines derived from quinoline have been studied using nine different solvent parameters reported in the literature. Relative merits and deficiencies of different parameters have been assessed. From the correlation results, attempts have been made to propose a solute-solvent interaction mechanism. For an assorted set of 19 solvents, as well as for a set of nine hydroxylic solvents, excellent results are obtained with correlation equation involving ET(30) and Hilderbrand's solubility parameter δH.

    Notes: Abstract The celestial bodies are considered as mass-points attracting each other according to Newton's law. Khilmi (1961) obtained some sufficient conditions for the occurrence of disintegration and escape in then-body system as time tends to infinity using his theory of continuous induction, inductiveness of inequalities and α-approach. Making an analytic approach, an improved version of Khilmi's result on escape and conditions to avoid disintegration is obtained.

    Notes: Summary The activity of citrate synthase of the liver and brain of rats shows a gradual increase as a function of age. Adrenalectomy causes no significant change in the activity of citrate synthase in either of these tissues in young, adult or old rats. Administration of hydrocortisone to adrenalectomized rats depresses the activity of this enzyme maximally in the liver and brain of young rats. Administration of actinomycin D tends to normalize, the depressed level of this enzyme.

    Notes: Summary The changes in circulation patterns over Eurasia during break monsoon condition over India are studied in comparison to the active monsoon condition. Break monsoon condition seems to set in over the India Sub-Continent in association with eastward movement of middle latitude westerly trough at 500 mb, having large amplitude extending into west Pakistan and northern India. Simultaneously the subtropical anticyclonic ridge over Arabia protrudes into central and Peninsular India. The high latitude blocking high over East Siberia retrogrades and the East Asiatic trough deepens and moves eastwards. The west Pacific subtropical ridge recedes eastward from the China continent. During this period the monsoon trough shifts, from its normal position over Gangetic plains, northwards to the foot of the Himalayas and the monsoon westerlies in the lower troposphere extends right upto the rim of the Tibetan Plateau. The sub-tropical ridge line in the upper troposphere shifts northwards during break and lies approximately above the lower monsoon trough. This seems to provide an effective process of removing ascending air in the lower monsoon trough causing exceptionally heavy rainfall over Assam and along the foot of the Himalayas.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Es werden klimatologische Beurteilungen der Werte des Stabilitätsparameters für verschiedene Druckschichten über Afrika in den Monaten Januar, April, Juli und Oktober vorgelegt. Diese Werte zeigen sehr kleine Änderungen in isobaren Schichten. In der Vertikalen ändern sich die Stabilitätswerte sehr rasch, so daß die Werte für die 850–700 mb-Schicht in allen vier Monaten ungefähr um drei Größenordnungen kleiner sind als die für die 50 mb-Schicht.
    Notes: Summary Climatological estimates for the values of static stability parameter are presented for the different pressure layers in the African atmosphere during the months of January, April, July and October. These values show very small variations on isobaric layers. In the vertical, the static stability values change rather rapidly so that the values for the 850–700 mb layer are, in all the four months, about three orders of magnitude less than those for the 50-30 mb layer.

    Notes: Abstract Nitrification associated with the various components [subsurface soil from unplanted and planted (rhizosphere) fields, standing water and surface soil from planted and unplanted fields and leaf sheath suspensions] of submerged rice paddies was examined in incubation experiments with solutions inoculated with soil or water samples. Substantial nitrification occurred in all samples, standing water and surface soil samples in particular, during their 40-day incubation with NH 4 + −N. Almost all the NH 4 + −N, disappeared during incubation with standing water, was recovered as NO inf3 sup- −N. This, compared to 70–80% from all soil samples and only 29% from leaf sheath suspensions. Significant loss of nitrogen, especially from leaf sheath suspensions, is probably due to nitrification-denitrification as evidenced by its complete recovery in the presence of N-Serve. Nitrification potential of the soil and water samples varied with the crop growth stage and was more pronounced at tillering and panicle inititation stages than at other stages. Nitrification potential of samples from green-manure-amended plots was distinctly less than that of samples from control and urea-amended plots. Most probable number (MPN) estimates of ammonium-oxidizing bacteria were always higher in surface soil in both planted and unplanted plots at all stages of crop growth.

    Notes: Summary Field experiments were conducted on transplanted rice (Oryza sativa L., var. Ratna) in a submerged soil, in order to study the distribution of N applied at 100 kg/ha. N was introduced as prilled urea or neem cake coated urea broadcast on the soil, and as urea supergranules, 1 or 2.5 g in size, point-placed at 5 cm depth. The surface-broadcast N was found mostly in the top 0–5 cm layer of soil and there was only a small vertical movement of applied N to 5–10 cm depth. With point placement of 1-g urea granules, the fertilizer N was found mostly at 5–10 cm depth and within 2.5 cm horizontal distance from the point of placement, compared with 5–10 cm depth and within 5 cm horizontal distance from the point of placement for the 2.5-g granules. With the two broadcast applications, the NH4 +-N content reached peaks of 40–68 mg/kg soil in the top 0–5 cm of soil within the first 3–6 days, decreased at a faster rate from the 6th to 12th day and then at a slower rate up to the 32nd day. In contrast, the NH4 +-N content around the points of placement of the urea supergranules reached peaks of 570–900 mg/kg soil during the first 3–12 days after placement, then decreased rapidly during the next 6–9 days, after which the values remained more or less unchanged but were still higher than the untreated control value.

    Notes: Abstract The production of streptokinase in a batch fermentation has been analysed for the role of incomplete macromixing of the broth. The analysis is based on a kinetic model exhibiting inhibition by the substrate and a primary metabolite (lactic acid), and a mixing model comprising two continuous flow reactors (CFRs) with closed-loop recycle. The inoculum is introduced into one region (one CFR) and the mixing process determines its distribution, growth and reactivity. By varying the dilution rates of the CFRs, any degree of macromixing can be simulated. For dilution rates larger than 1.0 h−1 almost complete macromixing is achieved, for which an analogy has been drawn with micromixing. Increasing the volume of the inoculated region relative to the noninoculated region improves the maximum attainable activity of streptokinase and shortens the time for this. In such a situation an imperfectly mixed bioreactor is superior to a perfectly mixed one, implying that good productivity requires a large inoculated region and incomplete macromixing. These inferences are supported by earlier studies of fluid mixing and relaxation times in bioreactors.
