Notes: Abstract. Copper single-crystals are grown by a galvanic method, using etched ion tracks in a polymer foil as templates. The copper deposition is carried out by reversible pulse electrolysis in an ultrasonic field. The method applied for this purpose permits fabrication of stable standing cylindrical single crystals with diameters in the nanometer and micrometer range with high aspect ratio and density of 105–107 per cm2 on a large area. The experimental results obtained in this way are compared with the results obtained by direct current plating under ultrasonic treatment and sole reversible electrolysis. The effects of all these deposition processes on the structure of copper claddings are shown.

Notes: Summary Although a transitory maternal zinc deficiency has been shown to result in an increased cadmium-induced fetotoxicity, the results of the present investigation indicated that a maternal zinc deficiency apparently did not affect the placental transfer of cadmium. However, a zinc deficiency did alter the maternal distribution of cadmium. The increased cadmium fetotoxicity associated with a maternal zinc deficiency may be caused by a maternal alteration rather than a direct effect on the fetus. Further study is necessary prior to any definitive statement concerning the effects of a maternal zinc deficiency on cadmium. fetotoxicity.

Notes: Summary This investigation has shown that not only the extent of fetal resorption and malformation but also the types of malformation seen in rats depend upon the strain used and day of gestation. Furthermore, the effects of zinc deficiency and cadmium administration on the fetus can be at least additive, as was seen for malformations. For fetal resorption, zinc deficiency potentiated the action of cadmium.

Notes: Abstract The research was undertaken to analyze the uptake and distribution of cadmium-109 in mice following repeated injections and to observe how the simultaneous administrations of zinc affected the cadmium retention. Mice were given one, two, or three intravenous administrations at 48-hr intervals. Animals were sacrificed 2 min to 48 hr after each injection. Zinc had little effect on the retention of cadmium in the samples analyzed, and injections behaved independently of each other.

Notes: Abstract A saturation-spectroscopy experiment is performed in a three-level system in Xe I, and shows that a narrow dip occurs in the power-broadened Lorentzian response. It is due to the Zeeman splitting of common level by the earth magnetic field. Other splittings, typically larger than 0.2 the natural width, can be observed using this saturation effect. Interpretation is made on the basis of simple realistic assumptions.

Notes: Abstract Laser induced nonlinear absorption profiles in a three-level system have been recorded to study the effect of elastic collisions upon optical coherences. In our particular system, the signal is due to a pure double-quantum term, where we have separated the effect of phase-interrupting collisions from the effect of velocity-changing collisions. Experimental results show that the effect of velocity-changing collisions is very small, and that broadening of the signal is due to phase-interrupting collisions mainly. We are able to determine the increase of the decay rate of the coherent superposition (the “coherence”) of two levels of same parity [Dγ 13/dp=(6.5±1) MHz/Torr] and an upper limit for the mean velocity change (ũ≲5m/s).

Notes: Abstract A seismic hazard evaluation for three dams in the Rocky Mountains of northern Colorado is based on a study of the historical seismicity. To model earthquake occurrence as a random process utilizing a maximum likelihood method, the catalog must exhibit random space-time characteristics. This was achieved using a declustering procedure and correction for completeness of recording. On the basis of the resulting a- and b-values, probabilistic epicentral distances for a 2 × 10−5 annual probability were calculated. For a random earthquake of magnitude M L 6.0–6.5, this distance is 15 km. Suggested ground motion parameters were estimated using a probabilistic seismic hazard analysis. Critical peak horizontal accelerations at the dams are 0.22g if median values are assumed and 0.39g if variable attenuation and seismicity rates are taken into account. For structural analysis of the dams, synthetic acceleration time series were calculated to match the empirical response spectra. In addition, existing horizontal strong motion records from two Mammoth Lakes, California earthquakes were selected and scaled to fit the target horizontal acceleration response spectra.
