    Lifetimes of excited levels of Kr I and Kr II (1972)

    Notes: Abstract The lifetimes of eight levels belonging to the 6p configuration of KrI and thirteen levels belonging to different configurations of KrII have been measured. The levels were excited by short electron pulses of appropriate energy and the lifetimes determined by a delayed coincidence method using single photon counting techniques. All measurements were carried out at different gas pressures. The measured lifetimes of the KrII levels are compared with other experimental results obtained by a different method (beam-foil spectroscopy) and with calculations made in the intermediate coupling scheme.

    Notes: Abstract.  We study an experimental setup to perform pattern recognition by correlation methods. This setup implements the Pure Phase Correlation (PPC) method, let us say, it only takes into account the phase distributions of the Fourier transform of the scene and the target. An experimental study of a PPC method is presented. A phase measurement interferometric technique is used to extract the phase of the Fourier transform of the correlation function. Some aspects related to the intermodulation are examined. Experimental PPC with improved discrimination capability obtained with binary masks is also considered. The experiments are carried out with segmented scenes and with multiobject scenes.

    Notes: Summary A 63-year-old woman underwent a left craniotomy for the removal of a middle cranial fossa meningioma. Microscopically, the tumor showed a transitional and fibroblastic histological pattern. Within the tumoral tissue there were collagenous foci where little eosinophilic masses were found. This component corresponded to elastic material with typical staining properties. Such features disappeared when the histological slides were incubated with elastase. Elastosis is a very uncommon feature observed in meningiomas, with an uncertain significance.

    Notes: Abstract  A case of CLL with two different cellular populations is reported. A 50-year-old man was evaluated for persistent absolute lymphocytosis. A peripheral blood smear revealed numerous small lymphocytes (83% of white blood cells counted). Frequent Grumpecht shadows were present, too. On bone marrow aspirate smears lymphocytes comprised 85% of the total cells counted, and the bone marrow biopsy showed a mixed nodular-interstitial infiltration pattern. The immunophenotypic study showed two different leukemic populations. The first one (comprising 79% leukemic cells) was CD5+, CD19+, CD10–, CD20+, CD18–, CD22–, CD23++, lambda dim, and FMC7–. The second population (comprising 21% leukemic cells) was CD5+, CD19+, CD10–, CD20+, CD18+, CD22+, CD23+, lambda++, and FMC7+. Gene rearrangement studies detected the germline and one rearranged band in Jk blot with each restriction endonuclease. In the Jh blot the germline and two rearranged bands were detected with EcoRI and BamHI and three rearranged bands with HindIII. The JBI/JBII blot detected only the germline band. The detection of three rearranged bands was interpreted as evidence of the presence of at least two monoclonal populations of cells with the same light chain restriction.

    How often is a perimesencephalic subarachnoid haemorrhage CT pattern caused by ruptured aneurysms? (1993)

    Notes: Summary Background Angiography is usually recomended in perimesencephalic subarachnoid haemorrhage (PM SAH) to rule out a basilar artery aneurysm. However it is not known how often aneurysms are found among patients with a CT pattern of PM haemorrhage or the frequency of this CT pattern after rupture of posterior circulation aneurysms. Method CTs of all SAH caused by posterior circulation aneurysms admited from 1/85 to 12/92 where reviewed by two examiners. Late (〉72 h) examinations were excluded. The remaining CTs were classified in perimesencephalic (PM) or non PM. Results 81 posterior circulation aneurysms were collected. Only one PM-like CT pattern was found, due to ruptured posterior communicating artery aneurysm (1.3%; 95% Cl (confidence intervals)=.03–6.7%). During the same period 37 PM SAH with negative angiographic results were admited. The likehood of finding an aneurysm in a patient with an early CT showing a PM distribution of haematic densities was 2.7% (95% Cl=.07–14%). Conclusion Although the probability of finding an aneurysm in a SAH patient with a PM CT pattern is low, a complete 4-vessel angiogram must be obtained.

    Notes: Summary Background van Gijn and co-workers identified „Perimesencephalic haemorrhage“ (PM) as distinct, benign, non-aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage. However, there is only one retrospective series of this entity outside the Netherlands. Purpose to confirm (or not) the benign nature of perimesencephalic subarachnoid haemorrhage by evaluating its clinical course and long-term follow-up in a consecutive series of patients admitted to a University Hospital. Methods Patients with subarachnoid haemorrhage and negative cerebral angiography admitted between January 1985 and April 1992 were classified according to the distribution of blood on a CT scan performed within 72 hours after onset, in perimesencephalic and non-perimesencephalic haemorrhages. Demographic and clinical data (collected consecutively), complications and long-term follow-up (obtained by chart review and follow-up by mail) were compared in the two groups. Results Seventy one cases, 36 perimesencephalic and 35 nonperimesencephalic were included. Sex and age distribution were similar in the two groups. A normal examination on admission was the rule in the perimesencephalic group. Only one patient with perimesencephalic haemorrhage had a complication — transient neurological signs during angiography — and there were no deaths or morbidity during follow-up. In the non-perimesencephalic group three patients rebleed, four developed hydrocephalus and two had delayed cerebral ischaemia. Mean duration of follow-up was 27,6 months for the perimesencephalic and 30,8 months for the non-perimesencephalic group. After discharge there was a fatal rebleed in the latter group. Fifteen percent of the subjects (11% of the perimesencephalic group and 20% of the non-perimesencephalic group) retired from work during the follow-up period. Headaches and depression were found in similar percentages (22–25%) in both groups. Conclusions This study confirms that perimesencepahlic haemorrhage is a distinct entity within the larger group of subarachnoid haemorrhage with negative angiograms, with a good short term and long-term prognosis, and no need for repeated angiographic investigation.

    Notes: Abstract Analysis of airgun seismic profiles from the Alboran Sea reveals a complex morphostructure with margins, basins, and structural highs. North of the Alboran Ridge, south-facing margins have a passive style of evolution, with thick progradational sequences of post-Messinian deposits, whereas north-facing margins are tectonized along structural highs with reduced sediment cover. Basins are extensional features developed since the Early Miocene by mechanisms of tectonic escape and pull-apart, under generalized northwest-southeast to north-south compression. Depositional sequences in this semi-land-locked sea were controlled by the local tectonism and influenced by global sea-level oscillations.

    Notes: Abstract The northern Alboran Ridge margin depicts fault-bounded, structural blocks tilted downward to the basins. Post-Messinian sequences fill depressions on these blocks with thick depositional wedges thinning basinward. A change in the stress field after the Early Pliocene produced structural inversions and generalized uplifting of the Alboran Ridge from the Late Pliocene to Recent time.

    Notes: Abstract Monocotyledonous leaves subjected to osmotica used for protoplast isolation accumulate a massive amount of putrescine (Put), lose chlorophyll and senesce rapidly. Treatment with spermidine (Spd) or spermine (Spm) prevents the loss of chlorophyll, indicating preservation of the thylakoid membranes at the site of the chlorophyll-protein complexes. Using several recently produced antibody probes, the effects on the stabilization of thylakoid membranes of applying either difluoromethylarginine (DFMA), a specific inhibitor of putrescine synthesis via arginine decarboxylase, or the polyamines Spd, Spm, or diaminopropane (Dap) to osmotically shocked oat leaves (Avena sativa L.) have been investigated. High protein levels were maintained in thylakoid membranes of leaf tissue incubated in the dark in the presence of 0.6 M sorbitol when pretreated with DFMA. After 48 h incubation, the level of the thylakoid protein D1, at the core of photosystem II, was higher in the DFMA-pretreated leaves as was the stromal protein ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase (Rubisco; as indicated by the level of large subunits). Applications of Spd, Spm or Dap were effective in retarding the loss of D1, D2 and cytochrome f from the thylakoid membranes as well as Rubisco large subunits and chlorophyll from the leaf tissue. The effects of polyamine applications may be mediated through Dap since most of the added Spd or Spm was converted to Dap within 6 h. The possible mechanisms of action of polyamine applications and DFMA-pretreatment on stabilizing the composition of the thylakoid membrane are also discussed.
