Description / Table of Contents: Summary This is a report on the diploid set of chromosomes in the capercaillie. The capercaillie has 18 macrochromosomes: 2 of these are sex chromosomes, and an as yet uncertain number of micro-chromosomes. It is unfortunately unpossible at the moment to gather information for necessary population cytogenetic investigations, since the species has practically died out in Germany.

Notes: Summary The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate parameters used for the measurement of regional myocardial contractile function in the setting of left ventricular (LV) asynchrony. Secondarily, we tested whether the peak negative value of left ventricular dP/dt (-dP/dt) can be used to estimate global LV end-systole during asynchrony. In seven anesthetized (Isoflurane) swine the left anterior descending coronary artery was cannulated and perfused at constant blood flow rates. To produce LV asynchrony, dobutamine (D) was infused into the perfusion system. This was repcated later during coronary hypoperfusion (HYPO) sufficient to produce regional contractile dysfunction. The amount of LV wall thickening during systole (% WT, sonomicrometry) was calculated using either - dP/dt or the closure of the aortic valve (AO, electromagnctic flow probc) for estimating the timing of global LV end-systole. % WT was compared to other paramcters which are not dependent upon the timing of global LV end-systole, including the amplitude of the first harmonic of the Fourier transform (AMP) and regional myocardial work (WI) estimated from the left ventricular pressure-wall thickness relationship. A close correlation between global LV end-systole defined by the AO or - dP/dt existed during control. D or HYPO. During HYPO+D no such relationship was found (r=.22, NS), and % WT calculated using - dP/dt as an estimate of end-systole was underestimated when comparcd to % WT calculated by use of the AO to estimate end-systole (2.9±6.8% vs 6.3±6.6%, p〈.05). % WT, AMP, and WI showed similar results during control, D and HYPO. However, D during HYPO increased the AMP from .59±.23 mm to .76±.32 mm and WI from 67±20 mm Hg*mm to 95±24 mm Hg*mm (p〈.05), respectively. This increase in regional myocardial function, however, was not detected by % WT (10.5±6.4% vs 6.3±6.6%). Thus, during left ventricular asynchrony, the measurement of LV-dP/dt to estimate the timing of global LV end-systole is inappropriate and can lcad to inaccuracies in the measurement of regional contractile function. Parameters such as AMP or WI are advantageous since global LV end-systole docs not need to be accurately defined.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Aqueous solutions of iodine complexes with starch, different samples of amylose or amylopectin show an induced positive Cotton effect in the region of the absorption maximum. The rotatory power and the extinction at 660 and 445 mμ depends upon iodine amylose ratio. The optical of some complexes increases with time, whereas the absorption remains constant. Experimental conditions which change the structure of the channel complexe (heating, addition of salts, solvents, urea or detergents) influence the induced Cotton effect.

Notes: Abstract A theoretical model of pulse propagation through single-mode fibres is presented taking into account the combined action of self-phase modulation, stimulated Raman-scattering and the group velocity mismatch between pump and Stokes pulses. Due to the walk-off of Stokes and laser light an asymmetric pump pulse depletion resulting in considerable reshaping of laser pulses and an asymmetric self-phase modulation spectrum can be calculated and experimentally verified. A maximum laser power is found to be transferable through the fibre.

Notes: Abstract Ti2RuFe and Ti2RuFeO2 nanocrystalline alloys were prepared by high energy ball-milling and used as cathodes for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in the process of sodium chlorate synthesis. Ti2RuFe is almost single phase with the B2 structure. In contrast, Ti2RuFeO2 is made of a mixture of Ti2RuFe and TiOx phases. Tests in chlorate electrolysis conditions did not show any sign of degradation of Ti2RuFeO2 over a 300 h period, while Ti2RuFe breaks down after less than 100 h. The degradation of Ti2RuFe occurs because of hydrogen absorption and desorption during alternating hydrogen discharge and open-circuit conditions. Various hypotheses to explain the increase stability of the O containing alloy are considered.

Notes: Abstract Ball-milled nanocrystalline Ti3RuFe powders were mixed with 1, 2, 4, 10 and 20 equivalents of Al and the mixtures were milled again for 20 h. The amount of Al atoms dissolved into the B2 structure of Ti3RuFe does not exceed 8–9 at %, the remaining being present as elemental Al into the powder mixture. During a subsequent treatment of the composite powder in alkaline solutions, the elemental Al is leached out, while Al solutes in the B2 structure are not affected. An examination of the surface by scanning electron microscopy reveals that the leached powder has a highly porous surface structure. Surface area measurements performed by BET measurements show that there is a tenfold increase in the effective surface area. Activated electrodes made from these porous materials show a significant decrease of the cathodic overpotential for hydrogen evolution in typical chlorate electrolysis conditions of about 80 mV.
