Notes: Abstract Male Mediterranean fruit flies,Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), produce volatile chemicals thought to be attractive sex pheromones. We demonstrated for the first time that male odor elicits upwind flight and zigzagging upwind flight patterns in mature unmated females. Such flight patterns indicate the mechanisms involved in female location of the pheromone source and arrival at that source. Similar female oriented upwind flight responses occurred with a three component blend comprised of ethyl-(E)-octenoate, geranyl acetate, andE,E-alpha farnesene. These findings clarify the role of male sex pheromone in mate-location strategies in this species and provide new bioassay criteria for evaluating attraction responses to male pheromone and synthetic blends.

Notes: Summary A material that elicits alarm and attack behavior byVespula squamosa (Drury) workers was isolated from venom extracts and identified by spectroscopic methods as N-3-methylbutylacetamide. This compound elicited attack responses from worker wasps identical to those responses observed when venom was applied at the same dosage. This is the first behavioral role reported for this compound.

Notes: Summary Nearly three and a half thousand sera obtained from various populations were tested serologically to obtain evidence of past infection with influenza A viruses that were prevalent from 1947 to 1972. No significant difference was found between the distributions of the levels of these antibodies of individuals of blood groups A and 0, A1 and 0, Rh (D+) and Rh (D-) and MM, MN and NN. The significance of these findings is discussed.

Notes: Summary Sera obtained from children of different ages were titrated for antibodies against Sendai virus. It was found that these antibodies first appeared at the same time as those against HA1 virus but before the antibodies against HA 2, CA and mumps viruses. Significant correlations were found between the titres of antibodies against Sendai and those against HA 1, HA 2 and mumps viruses but not CA virus. The correlation between the titres of antibodies against Sendai and HA 1 viruses, developed before the other correlations. The mean level of antibodies against Sendai virus in antibodycontaining sera increased with age; this increase in the mean level of antibodies was not observed with the antibodies against HA 1, HA 2, and CA viruses. The significance of these findings is discussed.

Notes: Summary Serial serum samples were obtained from 45 pregnant women who had been shown to possess complement fixing (CF) antibodies to cytomegalovirus (CMV) during a previous pregnancy. The serial samples were tested for antibodies against the early antigens (EA) and complement fixing antigens of CMV. All of the 45 women still possessed CF antibodies at the commencement of their next pregnancy. Six of the 45 women (13 per cent) lacked detectable IFA-EA antibodies whilst 19/45 (42 per cent) women possessed only low titres (≤64) of these antibodies. However, 20/45 (44 per cent) women possessed high titre (≽128) antibodies despite having experienced their primary CMV infection many months previously. It is concluded that antibodies to the EA of CMV are not as transitory as has been suggested and that their presence, even at high titre, in a serum sample from a pregnant woman cannot be taken as presumptive evidence of recent primary infection with this virus.

Notes: Summary 1. The WS strain of Influenza A, the Shope strain of swine influenza A, and the Sendai strain of Newborn Pneumonitis Virus multiplied in cultures of kidney cells obtained from man, rhesus monkey, beef embryo, rabbit, guinea pig, hamster, mouse and chick embryo. 2. The WS, NWS and PR8 strains of influenza A were passed readily in monkey kidney cultures. A England 1951 and other egg adapted strains were not passed successfully. 3. Study of strains passed in monkey kidney cultures indicated that the PR8 strain had gained virulence for these cultures with an associated increase in virulence for mice but no change inβ inhibitor sensitivity. The WS strain had not gained virulence for cultures or mice but had lost sensitivity toβ inhibitor.

Notes: Summary To study the genetic variation of human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) in Asian populations, the amino-terminal antigenic domains of glycoprotein B of HCMVs isolated from ethnic Chinese transplant patients were cloned and sequenced. The nucleotide and encoded amino acid sequences were compared with published sequences of AD169 and Towne laboratory strains. Within the region sequenced, 9 out of 15 clinical isolates (60%) possessed a peptide configuration similar to that of strain AD169 while 6 isolates (40%) displayed a peptide configuration similar to that of strain Towne. The nucleotide and amino acid identities of AD169-like clinical isolates exhibited variations of 95.4%–99.6% and 95.4%–100% respectively, whereas the identities of Towne-like clinical isolates were within the range of 97.3%–100% and 96.6%–100% at the nucleotide and amino acid levels. The previously defined neutralizing epitope was conserved among the clinical isolates sequenced while unique non-conservative amino acid substitutions were detected in the non-neutralizing epitope within the amino-terminal antigenic domain of glycoprotein B of all AD169-like isolates (Y-〉S) and one of the Towne-like isolates (R-〉Q).

Notes: Summary Immune mouse sera containing antibodies against Sendai virus were found to be heat labile. Sera which were obtained soon after infection were particularly susceptible to heating. Normal mouse serum was found to restore the activity of these heated sera. This suggests that the former contained a heat labile accessory factor which assists the activity of antibody against Sendai virus in mouse sera. It was not possible to demonstrate that this factor was complement.
