Abstract: The recent adaptation of a Chinese parent version of the Autism Spectrum Rating Scale showed the Modified Chinese Autism Spectrum Rating Scale to be reliable and valid for use in China. The aim of this study was to test the Modified Chinese Autism Spectrum Rating Scale for fit to the Rasch model. We analysed data from a previous study of the Modified Chinese Autism Spectrum Rating Scale which comprised 1593 non-cases and 420 children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. We used super items based on groups of locally dependent items and item deletion when necessary to achieve good fit to the model for each of the three subscales identified by Zhou et al. and for the full 59-item Modified Chinese Autism Spectrum Rating Scale. The resulting conversion tables enable the use of genuine unidimensional, interval level scores for the total score and three subscales. Reliability was high with Person Separation Index values ranging from 0.83 to 0.89 for the three subscales and 0.79 for the total scale. In addition, we were able to identify a full-scale version of the Autism Spectrum Rating Scale and its three subscales that are all free of differential item functioning in relation to the five person factors recorded namely age, sex, caseness, relative and city. In future studies, the Teacher version of the Modified Chinese Autism Spectrum Rating Scale needs examination with Rasch analysis. Lay abstract The Autism Spectrum Rating Scale is a behavioural rating scale completed by parents and teachers that is useful for identifying children with an autism spectrum disorder. The development of a modified Autism Spectrum Rating Scale suitable for use in China is important for the identification of children in China with an autism spectrum disorder. In this study, we examined the Modified Chinese Autism Spectrum Rating Scale using a statistical technique known as Rasch analysis. Rasch analysis tests whether the questionnaire meets the standards for modern scientific measurement. We used Rasch analysis to examine data from 2013 children in China including 420 diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder who had been rated by a parent or grandparent. After removing a small number of items (questions), the Modified Chinese Autism Spectrum Rating Scale met the stringent criteria for Rasch measurement. The availability of a reliable and precise tool for assessing behaviours characteristic of an autism spectrum disorder in Chinese children will improve the identification and diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder in China, thus enabling better provision of support services.

Abstract: Acetylene has been found to significantly inhibit biological activity of methanogens and thus might be applicable for reducing the generation and emission of methane from municipal solid waste landfills. However, acetylene is gaseous and so it is considered physically infeasible to directly apply this gas to waste in landfill conditions. In the present study, a novel acetylene release mechanism was tested, using a matrix of acetylene entrapped in high hydrophobic paraffin wax and/or rosin and calcium carbide capsules with a ratio of 1.0 g g −1 matrix and a diameter of 10 mm to facilitate the gradual release of acetylene. A diffusion mechanism model ( Q = ɣ × t 0.5 ) for the matrix was derived based on the T. Higuchi equation, and the effective diffusion coefficients ( D e ) were acquired by linear fitting. Additionally, it was found that D e remained constant when the rosin content was up to more than 20% g g −1 matrix.

Abstract: Cistanche tubulosa is a type of Chinese herbal medicine and exerts various biological functions. Previous studies have been demonstrated that Cistanche tubulosa phenylethanoid glycosides (CTPG) exhibit antitumor effects on a variety of tumor cells. However, the antitumor effects of CTPG on HepG2 and BEL-7404 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells are still elusive. Our study showed that CTPG significantly inhibited the growth of HepG2 and BEL-7404 cells through the induction of cell cycle arrest and apoptosis, which was associated with the activation of MAPK pathways characterized by the up-regulated phosphorylation of p38, JNK, and ERK1/2 and mitochondria-dependent pathway characterized by the reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential. The release of cytochrome c and the cleavage of caspase-3, -7, -9, and PARP were subsequently increased by CTPG treatment. Moreover, CTPG significantly suppressed the migration of HepG2 through reducing the levels of matrix metalloproteinase-2 and vascular endothelial growth factor. Interestingly, CTPG not only enhanced the proliferation of splenocytes but also reduced the apoptosis of splenocytes induced by cisplatin. In H22 tumor mouse model, CTPG combined with cisplatin further inhibited the growth of H22 cells and reduced the side effects of cisplatin. Taken together, CTPG inhibited the growth of HCC through direct antitumor effect and indirect immunoenhancement effect, and improved the antitumor efficacy of cisplatin.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore and compare the relationship among serum testosterone, systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and carotid atherosclerosis in middle-aged and elderly men of Han nationality in the real world. With reference to the inclusion criteria, 89 middle-aged and elderly Han male patients were finally selected. Local weighted regression (LOESS) and multivariate logistic regression models were used to explore the independent correlation between serum testosterone, new inflammatory markers, and atherosclerosis. The diagnostic value of related indexes was evaluated by the receiver working curve characteristic curve (ROC), and the best critical value of testosterone and related inflammatory indexes was discussed. In the LOESS model, bioavailable testosterone (BT), free testosterone (FT), total testosterone (TT) and SIRI, NLR, LMR, and atherosclerosis were significantly correlated. After adjusting for confounding factors, BT, FT, TT, and LMR were negatively correlated with atherosclerosis (odds ratio [OR] 〈 1, p 〈 .05), and SIRI and NLR were positively associated with atherosclerosis (OR 〉 1, p 〈 .05). According to the ROC curve results, the area under the curve (AUG) of BT is 0.870, and the optimal threshold point is 4.875. The AUG of SIRI is 0.864, and the best threshold point is 0.769. Low testosterone and high inflammatory levels are closely related to atherosclerosis. Testosterone (TT, FT, and BT) and new inflammatory markers, SIRI, NLR, and LMR, are associated with carotid atherosclerosis in middle-aged and elderly men.

Abstract: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) has been a preferred treatment option for superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SESCC). Objectives: To compare the outcomes of ESD and esophagectomy in the treatment of SESCC, especially for lesions invading muscularis mucosa or submucosa (pT1a-MM/T1b). Design: We retrospectively analyzed data from patients with SESCC who underwent ESD or esophagectomy between 2015 and 2021. Methods: After propensity score matching, overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), recurrence-free survival (RFS), and treatment-related events were compared between the ESD and esophagectomy groups. Furthermore, we performed a Cox regression analysis to identify factors associated with survival. Results: OS and DSS were significantly higher in the ESD group ( n = 508) than that in the esophagectomy group ( n = 466). After matching, 404 patients (202 per group) were included in the study. No significant differences were found between the ESD and esophagectomy groups in OS ( p = 0.566), RFS ( p = 0.586), and DSS ( p = 0.912). The ESD group showed less blood loss, shorter procedure duration and hospital stay, lower hospital cost, and fewer adverse events. However, a lower R0 resection rate was observed in the ESD group compared to the esophagectomy group. Subgroup analysis showed comparable survival outcomes between the two groups. In Cox regression analysis, age was the independent factor associated with OS. Conclusion: In the treatment of SESCC, ESD showed sufficient safety and advantages. Even for pT1a-MM/pT1b SESCC, ESD may be an alternative treatment to esophagectomy.

Abstract: Western media organizations have frequently complained about the lack of reporting freedom in China, especially when covering controversial events. During the ‘July 5th’ Urumqi event in 2009, the Chinese government loosened the regulations on reporting freedom for foreign media and tested a new policy in dealing with foreign media reporting social conflicts in China, a sensitive topic that the government had laid firm hands on for decades. This study examined how Xinhua, Reuters, and AP covered the 2009 ‘July 5th’ Urumqi event under the loosened regulations. The findings revealed that during the initial stage, the three news agencies displayed considerable similarities in news frames. When it was time to investigate background and contextual information, media organizations began to reveal the different interest they represent and hence the variance in news frames.
