Abstract: A total of 840 coal samples were taken from the Pingshuo (Pinglu-Shuoxian) Mining District, Ningwu Coalfield, northern China. The samples were analysed by optical microscopy, sequential chemical extraction procedure, SEM–EDX analysis, X-ray powder diffraction and ICP-MS techniques. The results indicate that the Li, Ga and Al contents of the coals have reached an economically valuable level. Total Li reserves reached 100000, 558400 and 382600 tons in the Nos. 4, 9 and 11 seams, respectively. Total Ga reserves reached 28600, 80700 and 40900 tons in the Nos. 4, 9 and 11 seams, respectively. Total Al reserves reached 206000000 tons in the No. 9 seam. The sequential chemical extraction procedure results indicate that the element concentrations are mainly related to inorganic matter. The minerals are kaolinite, boehmite, chlorite-group mineral, quartz, calcite, pyrite, siderite and amorphous clay material. The kaolinite, boehmite and chlorite phase could be the most likely host of the Li, Ga and Al. These elements could be migrated from the Yinshan Oldland or bauxite of the Benxi formation by absorption. The bauxite of the Benxi formation should be the most possible source of Li, Ga and Al of the coal in the Pingshuo district.

Abstract: Both foil structure and surface texturing have been widely used to improve bearing performance. However, there is little research on their combination, namely, textured gas foil bearing. This paper adopts the Reynolds equation as the pressure governing equation of bump-type foil journal bearing to study the influence of textures located on the top foil. The Newton-Raphson iterative method and the perturbation method are employed to obtain static and dynamic characteristics, respectively. Thereafter, based on three texture distribution types, further analysis about the effect of the relative texture depth and the textured portion is carried out. The results indicate that an appropriate arrangement of textures could improve the performance of gas foil bearing. For #1 texture distribution, the maximum increment of load capacity could exceed 10% when ω  =  1.4 × 10 5 r/min, ε  =  0.2.

Abstract: Energy efficiency for room air conditioners has received increasing attention in recent years with the intense emphasis on environmental concern and energy consumption. As the main energy consumption component of air conditioner, compressor awaits further work to accomplish the transition of performance evaluation from one operation condition to its actual usage. In the present study, an evaluation index called annual efficiency is proposed to rate the annual performance of air conditioner compressor. Experimental study is conducted on four variable-speed compressors, and the results show that the best fit determined from annual efficiency is different from that of ASHRAE standard. The compressor efficiency and dynamic pressure are quite different at rated and half-capacity test conditions. Compressor running under half-capacity conditions is more energy efficient and peak phenomenon of dynamic pressure is less obvious when compared with rated conditions. Moreover, more attention should be paid to half-capacity conditions to improve the annual efficiency of compressor and energy-saving capabilities of air conditioners.

Abstract: Shot peening is widely used in automobile, aviation, and other industries because it can change the fatigue strength of metal structures by introducing residual compressive stress field on the surface and significantly improve the fatigue life of mechanical structures. In order to improve the surface properties of parts after shot peening, an analysis method for rapidly predicting residual stress of parts surface during shot peening is proposed. During the analysis, an elastoplastic impact model of shot was established, and stress–strain laws in three processes of elastic loading, plastic deformation and stress release were studied. The residual stress under different shot peening parameters was predicted by considering the plastic strengthening effect of TC4 (Ti-6Al-4V). A TC4 shot peening test was performed and residual stress was measured, and the results are consistent with the model predictions, which verified correctness of the model.

Abstract: This paper reports tensile properties of single layer and multilayer knitted glass fabric reinforced epoxy composites. The single layer composite was subjected to tensile load in off-axis angles of 0°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90°. The multilayer laminates stacked as configurations of [0°] 4 , [07±4570°], [0°/90°/90°/0°] and [90°] 4 were tested under a uniaxial tensile load. Emphasis was on the fracture characteristics of these composites. A ‘matrix digestion and layer peeling’ method was used to visualize the fracture modes of all the layers in a fractured laminate on a lamina level. It was found that the fracture mode of an angle-plied lamina in the laminate is different from that of a single layer composite under an off-axial tensile load.

Abstract: Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a major medical complication of drinking alcohol, and commonly accompanied with hepatic iron overload and liver injuries. Oxidative stress plays an important role in pathogenesis of ALD and also leads to iron-metabolic disorders. In this study, the effects of vitamin C (Vc) on iron metabolism-related genes expression and liver protection from drinking in mice were investigated. Twenty-four male kunming mice were divided into four groups (six mice per group): control (water drinking); alcohol group (20% alcohol drinking), alcohol + low Vc group (adding 50 mg/kg Vc daily) and alcohol + high Vc group (adding 100 mg/kg Vc daily). All these mice were sacrificed after 7 days. Vc can ameliorate the increase of sera alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity and hepatic iron overload of drinking alcohol in mice. Vc increases the expression of the iron-regulated hormone hepcidin and decreases transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1) expression in liver. Vc also down-regulates the expression of ferroportin 1 (Fpn1) in the intestine and decreases the iron release to blood. In conclusion, Vc ameliorated the alcoholic liver injuries through regulating the iron metabolism-related genes expression.

Abstract: In this study, the role of the RhoA/Rho-kinase (RhoA/ROCK)-signaling pathway in cardiovascular dysfunction associated with hyperthyroidism was examined with the use of fasudil, a Rho-kinase inhibitor. Male Spraque-Dawley rats were treated with l-thyroxine (T 4 ) alone, T 4 + low-dose fasudil (2 mg/kg/day) or T 4 + high-dose fasudil (10 mg/kg/day) and compared with control animals. Rats in the T 4 group showed an increase in the ratio of heart weight to body weight, which was ameliorated by fasudil at both low and high doses. Morphometric and hemodynamic parameters were also evaluated and confirmed that fasudil attenuated the cardiac hypertrophy induced by T 4 . The extent of phosphorylation of the myosin phosphatase targeting subunit was quantified by Western blotting to evaluate the activity of Rho-kinase in the heart tissue. Both Western blotting and reverse transcriptase–polymerase chain reaction analyses revealed enhancement of Rho-kinase and activator protein 1 activity and reduction of c-FLIP L expression in the T 4 group, and this response was inhibited by f asudil in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, f asudil inhibited apoptosis induced by T 4 as evidenced by the detection of terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling–positive cells and the expressions of bax and bcl-2. These results suggested that the RhoA/ROCK pathway is involved in the cardiac hypertrophy induced by experimental hyperthyroidism. The antagonism of this pathway may thus be useful as an alternative target in the treatment of hyperthyroid heart disease.

Abstract: Inverted T-shaped precast ribbed panels are used as single-span simply supported bottom plates in concrete composite slabs. The panels have regularly distributed holes in the ribs; therefore they are not only convenient for pipeline layout, but also work well with cast-in-situ concrete layer. An experiment of precast ribbed panels was carried out under out-plane vertical static loading; it was found that the panels were damaged due to concrete shear failure between rib holes near supports. This is different from mid-span bending failure observed in similar experiment by other scholars. The main reason is related to size effect of concrete shear plane. Then, finite element simulation was performed by using commercial software ABAQUS to model the failure mode and bearing capacity of the panel under out-plane vertical static loading, the numerical results are in good agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, an equilibrium method was proposed to estimate the ultimate bearing capacity for mid-span bending failure and concrete shear failure, respectively. Finally, parametric analysis with the equilibrium method was done to investigate influences of concrete strength and cross sectional dimension on the mechanical behavior of the precast ribbed panels. Compared with the test data and the finite element results, it is concluded that the proposed equilibrium method can predict the failure mode and ultimate bearing capacity of precast ribbed panels.
