    Abstract: The factors that influence in-plane mechanical responses and mode I interlaminar fracture toughness of stitched unidirectional sisal/epoxy laminates were studied in this paper. It was found that in-plane strength and stiffness of the laminates were not significantly affected by the stitching threads, while the interlaminar toughness was greatly improved, especially at higher sisal content. Unlike glass fiber reinforced polymer composites, sisal laminates have a rather high tolerance against the damages induced by stitching process. In addition, stitching expanded the fiber bridging zone and determined the R-curve profiles of sisal laminates. Factors including stitching density, diameter and species of stitching thread, continuity of stitching, and modification methods of sisal, were proved to greatly influence the delamination resistance of the laminates.

    Abstract: The authors discuss the water absorption behaviour of sisal and its epoxy based composites and the mechanical properties of composites that have been aged in water. In addition, a series of fibre pretreatment techniques, including mercerization, acetylation, cyanoethylation, coupling agent treatment and thermal treatment, which are believed to be able to improve the water resistance of sisal and its composites, have been evaluated. It was found that the water absorption behaviour of sisal composites is controlled mainly by the fibre and the fibre/matrix interfacial characteristics. As a result, appropriate fibre modification to retard water diffusion and enhance interfacial adhesion is necessary if the natural fibre composites are to be used in practical applications.

    Abstract: In patients with a large, unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the primary recommendation is for transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) but used alone TACE is not typically curative. Combinations of TACE followed in a delayed fashion by single-applicator thermal ablation have also been suboptimal. As an alternative, we investigated the combination of TACE followed within 1–3 days by multi-antenna microwave ablation (MWA) in patients with a large HCC, to determine the feasibility, safety, local control, and short-term survival rates of this approach. Methods: We retrospectively studied 43 patients with a large HCC (mean diameter, 8.8 cm; SD, 2.8 cm) treated between July 2015 and July 2018, who underwent TACE followed within 3 days by multi-antenna simultaneous MWA. We measured the liver and renal function before and after treatment, recorded complications, used three-dimensional software and imaging to calculate tumor necrosis rates at 1 month after therapy, and calculated overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) using the Kaplan–Meier method. Results: Mean follow up was 12.2 (range, 3.5–35.6) months. All patients completed the treatment protocol. At 1 month after combined therapy, tumor necrosis was complete in 16 (37.2%), nearly complete in 19 (44.2%), and partial in 8 (18.6%) patients. The 1- and 2-year OS rates were 64.0% and 46.8%, respectively, with a median OS of 23.0 months; and the 1- and 2-year PFS rates were 19.9% and 4.4%, respectively, with a median PFS of 4.2 months. A transient change in liver function occurred 3 days after MWA but resolved within 1 month. Only two patients had major complications, which were treatable and resolved. Conclusion: Multi-antenna MWA-oriented combined therapy is feasible and well tolerated, and it results in satisfactory initial local control and short-term survival in some but not all patients with a large HCC.

    Abstract: Accumulating evidence indicates that the glymphatic system has a critical role in maintaining brain homeostasis. However, the detailed anatomy of the glymphatic pathway is not well understood, mostly due to a lack of high spatial resolution 3D visualization. In this study, a fluorescence micro-optical sectioning tomography (fMOST) was used to characterize the glymphatic architecture in the mouse brain. At 30 and 120 min after intracisternal infusion with fluorescent dextran (Dex-3), lectin was injected to stain the cerebral vasculature. Using fMOST, a high-resolution 3D dataset of the brain-wide distribution of Dex-3 was acquired. Combined with fluorescence microscopy and microplate array, the heterogeneous glymphatic flow and the preferential irrigated regions were identified. These cerebral regions containing large-caliber penetrating arteries and/or adjacent to the subarachnoid space had more robust CSF flow compared to other regions. Moreover, the major glymphatic vessels for CSF influx and fluid efflux in the entire brain were shown in 3D. This study demonstrates the regional heterogeneity in the glymphatic system and provides an anatomical resource for further investigation of the glymphatic function.

    Abstract: Prepump arterial pressure (Pa) indicates the ease or difficulty with which the blood pump can draw blood from vascular access (inflow) during hemodialysis. The absolute prepump arterial pressure to blood pump speed (Qb) ratio (|Pa/Qb|) may reflect the dysfunction of other vascular accesses. There is no consensus on the impact of |Pa/Qb| on arteriovenous fistula dysfunction. This study aimed to demonstrate the impact of |Pa/Qb| on arteriovenous fistula dysfunction. Methods: In this retrospective analysis, 490 hemodialysis patients with arteriovenous fistula from three hospitals were enrolled. Data were extracted from the I-Diapro database and hospital case systems. The absolute values for |Pa/Qb| and other data collected in the first month of enrollment were used to predict arteriovenous fistula dysfunction and determine the |Pa/Qb| cutoff value. Based on this value, patients were grouped, and 1-year arteriovenous fistula function was analyzed. Patients were followed until arteriovenous fistula dysfunction, until access type replacement, or for 12 months. Results: The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for fistula dysfunction over 1 year was 0.65, with an optimal |Pa/Qb| value, sensitivity, and specificity of 0.499, 60.7%, and 72.6%, respectively. |Pa/Qb|  〉  0.499 was associated with earlier intervention (317.37 ± 7.68 vs 345.96 ± 3.64 days), lower survival ( p  〈  0.001), and a 3.26-fold greater risk of arteriovenous fistula dysfunction ( p  〈  0.001) than |Pa/Qb| ⩽ 0.499. Conclusions: |Pa/Qb| was an independent risk factor for arteriovenous fistula dysfunction. Nurses should emphasize |Pa/Qb| monitoring and properly set blood pump speed according to this ratio to protect arteriovenous fistula function. |Pa/Qb|  〉  0.499 might be a predictive measure of arteriovenous fistula dysfunction.

    Abstract: A novel fibre composite consisting of natural vegetable fibre as the reinforcer and plasticised natural vegetable fibre as the matrix was studied. By means of cyanoethylation and chlorination, pine sawdust and chopped sisal were converted into thermoplastics and then compounded with sisal and ramie fibres. The natural fibre composite not only exhibits properties similar to those of conventional fibre composites, but also is characterised by easy processing, enviromental frendliness, low cost and capability of tailoring property due to the physically heterogeneous nature.

    Abstract: To prepare self-reinforced sisal composites, sisal fibers were cleaned, treated with NaOH solution, and then benzylated with benzyl chloride. In this way, the skin layers of the fibers were converted into thermoplastic material while the core of the fiber cells remained unchanged. Under the circumstances of hot pressing, self-reinforced all-plant fiber composites of sisal can be prepared, in which plasticised sisal serves as matrix and the unplasticised cores of the fibers as reinforcement. In this work the effect of the reaction conditions, such as alkalinity, temperature and the extent of benzylation, was studied in detail. The roles of quaternary ammonium salts and γ-ray irradiation treatment on the efficiency of benzylation were also taken into account. In addition, structural characteristics, melt flow and mechanical properties of the modified sisal and their composite sheets were analysed. It was found that a balance between melt processability and the reinforcing effect of the benzylated sisal fibers was required.

    Abstract: Existing reports have demonstrated that miR-199a-3p plays a role as a tumor suppressor in a variety of human cancers. This study aims to further validate the expression of miR-199a-3p in HCC and to explore its underlying mechanisms by using multiple data sets. Chip data or sequencing data and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) were integrated to assess the expression of miR-199a-3p in HCC. The potential targets and transcription factor regulatory network of miR-199a-3p in HCC were determined and possible biological mechanism of miR-199a-3p was analyzed with bioinformatics methods. In the results, miR-199a-3p expression was significantly lower in HCC tissues compared to normal tissues according to chip data or sequencing data and qRT-PCR. Moreover, 455 targets of miR-199a-3p were confirmed, and these genes were involved in the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, pathways in cancer, and focal adhesions. LAMA4 was considered a key target of miR-199a-3p. In CMTCN, 11 co-regulatory pairs, 3 TF-FFLs, and 2 composite-FFLs were constructed. In conclusion, miR-199a-3p was down regulated in HCC and LAMA4 may be a potential target of miR-199a-3p in HCC.

    Abstract: De qi is a sensory response elicited by acupuncture stimulation. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), de qi is essential for clinical efficacy. However, the understanding of the neurobiological basis of de qi is still limited. Objective To investigate the relationship between brain activation and de qi by taking a single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scan while applying acupuncture at TE5. Methods A total of 24 volunteers were randomly divided into 4 groups, and received verum or sham acupuncture at true acupuncture point TE5 or a nearby sham point according to grouping. All subjects then received a 99m Tc-ethylcysteinate dimer (ECD) SPECT scan. Results All six subjects in the verum acupuncture at true acupuncture point group experienced de qi sensation; in contrast, all six subjects in the sham acupuncture at the sham point group responded with nothing other than non-sensation. Compared to the scan results from subjects who experienced non-sensation, SPECT scans from subjects with de qi sensation demonstrated significant activated points mainly located in brodmann areas 6, 8, 19, 21, 28, 33, 35, 37, 47, the parahippocampal gyrus, lentiform nucleus, claustrum and red nucleus; deactivated points were seen in brodmann areas 9 and 25. Conclusions Verum acupuncture at true acupuncture points is more likely to elicit de qi sensation. De qi sensations mainly resulted in brain area activations, but not deactivations. These brain areas are related to the curative effect of Te5. The acupuncture needle sensations of de qi and sharp pain are associated with different patterns of activations and deactivations in the brain.

    Abstract: In the present work slight benzylation of sisal fibre was carried out to prepare natural resource based self reinforced composites. By controlling the degree of benzylation, the outer layer of the ultimate cells was converted into thermoplastic and the inner part maintained the load bearing ability. When these modified fibres were moulded under certain temperature and pressure, the thermoplasticised portion flowed freely and served as matrix, while the unaffected parts in the core can still provide reinforcing effect. Such an all-plant fibre composite is characterised by self-reinforcement, easy processing and low cost.
