Abstract: The residual stress of crystalline materials induced by deformation at grain level strongly correlates with crystal orientation. In the present work, the dependence of residual stress on crystallographic orientation in diamond cutting of polycrystalline aluminum is investigated by crystal plasticity finite element modeling and simulations. Furthermore, corresponding ultra-precision diamond cutting experiments, which have the same parameter setup with the finite element model, are also carried out. The crystallographic orientations of the specimens are depicted by electron back-scattered diffraction characterization, and the surface residual stress is measured by X-ray diffraction. Both experiment and finite element simulation results demonstrate the anisotropic characteristics of the residual stress within machined polycrystalline aluminum, which exhibits the significant correlation with crystallographic orientation. Furthermore, finite element simulations of bi-crystal cutting are also performed, which indicate that the grain boundary also has a strong influence on the generation of residual stress.

Abstract: A malignant neoplasm in the central nervous system with diffuse white matter changes on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is rare in children. It could be misdiagnosed as acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. This report presents our experience based on 4 patients (3 male, 1 female; aged 7-13 years) whose MRI showed diffuse lesions in white matter and who were initially diagnosed with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis. All of the patients received corticosteroid therapy. After brain biopsy, the patients were diagnosed with gliomatosis cerebri, primitive neuroectodermal tumor and central nervous system lymphoma. We also provide literature reviews and discuss the differentiation of central nervous system neoplasm from acute disseminated encephalomyelitis.

Abstract: This study explored how the perception of work as a calling, a construct with a long history in Western culture, is experienced within Chinese culture. A qualitative study was conducted with 210 Chinese college students. Using emergent qualitative document analysis, results revealed four dimensions of general calling and career-related calling: Guiding Force, Meaning and Purpose, Altruism, and Active Tendency. These results largely converge with those found using samples within Western cultures, although the label “sense of duty” was found to be a unique and salient aspect of calling among Chinese college students. Results also revealed that effect of calling was not always positive. This study provides the first evidence that many aspects of the multidimensional construct of calling may be shared within Chinese culture, at least with college student participants. Implications for research and practice are explored.

Abstract: Biomaterials have been widely used for stomatological reconstructive surgery in recent years. Many studies have demonstrated that the porous structure of an implant promotes bone ingrowth and its stiffness can be controlled via the design of the porosity. Although some researchers have paid attention to investigating the porous structure for dental implants, the biomechanical properties and osseointegration have not been well studied. In this study, finite element analysis and experiments have been used to evaluate the biomechanical performance and osseointegration of dental implants with porous/solid structures fabricated by selective laser melting using commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti, Grade 2). The implants were tested and the fracture surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscope to investigate the failure mechanisms. To reduce bone resorption, the porosity of dental implant was designed to optimize its stiffness. Finally, animal experiments revealed that bone tissue ingrowth was seen into the porous structure. It is believed that the porous dental implants have great potential in future applications.

Abstract: This research is concerned with the problem of parameter identification for ship response model. A novel nonlinear innovation–based algorithm is proposed by use of the hyperbolic tangent function and the stochastic gradient algorithm. In order to demonstrate the validity of the algorithm, two identification experiments are adopted by the “Galaxy” ship and the “Yupeng” ship. Furthermore, the comparison experiment is illustrated to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, including the least square algorithm, the traditional stochastic gradient algorithm and the improved nonlinear innovation–based stochastic gradient algorithm. The identification results indicate that the improved stochastic gradient algorithm is with higher accuracy by 95.2% than the original algorithm and 11.75% than the least square algorithm. In addition, the proposed algorithm is with advantages of fast speed and high accuracy of identification. That can be extended to other parameter identification systems with the limited test data.

Abstract: Research suggests that perceiving a calling toward a particular career is relatively frequent among college students in Western cultures. However, little is known about how this applies to other cultural contexts. This study assessed the perception of career as a calling in the Chinese culture. Study 1 reports the development of the Chinese Calling Scale (CCS), based on a sample of 788 Chinese college students, and identifies three dimensions of a calling: altruism, guiding force, and meaning and purpose. Measurement invariance of the CCS across gender is supported. In Study 2, the convergent and criterion validity of the CCS is examined based on a sample of 387 college students. The CCS is strongly related to an existing calling measure and moderately related to life meaning and life satisfaction. Study 3 examines the relation between calling, hope, life meaning, life satisfaction, and career decidedness among 518 college students. The findings reveal that hope significantly mediated the relation of calling with career decidedness, life meaning, and life satisfaction. In summary, this study provides a new scale to assess calling in Chinese culture and is the first to explore how calling relates to dispositional hope.

Abstract: The terrain of China is relatively complex, which leads to the complex and changeable working conditions of high-speed trains during braking. Studying the influence under different braking conditions on the performance of train brake pads is a problem worthy of in-depth discussion. In order to explore the performance changes of powder metallurgy brake pads during train braking, this paper summarizes the friction and wear properties and wear mechanism of powder metallurgy brake pads under different braking conditions; combined with the research status of powder metallurgy brake pad materials, it provides directions for the research of new powder metallurgy materials. Provide reference for the improvement of brake pads of high-speed train in the future.

Abstract: In this study, we adopted a person-centered approach using latent profile analysis to explore whether profiles of calling based on the internal and external sources of a calling are identified and how these profiles relate to successful university-to-work transition outcomes (i.e., higher career satisfaction, higher person-job fit, and lower turnover intentions). We assessed a sample of 684 Chinese university graduates 1 week before and 6 months after graduation and found five profiles of calling: strongly undeveloped calling, moderately undeveloped calling, transcendent calling, highly transcendent calling, and modern calling. We found that a calling that was driven by internal and external sources (i.e., transcendent calling) or predominantly by internal sources (i.e., modern calling) was related to more successful university-to-work transition outcomes. Our findings contribute to the literature on calling by showing that the sources of calling are important to conceptualize different types of calling and differentiate the role of different callings.

Abstract: It is important to develop a feasible animal model of regional anesthesia other than sciatic nerve blockade for pharmacokinetic investigations of new local anesthetics or analgesia in upper extremity surgery. Herein, we explored a nerve stimulator (NS)-guided brachial plexus block (BPB) in a rat model. The anatomy of the brachial plexus in rats was delineated in cadavers, and various BPBs were examined. The puncture point was located 0.5–1.0 cm below the lateral one-third of the clavicle. The efficacy and safety of the NS-guided BPB were evaluated using an injection of 2% lidocaine or 0.5% bupivacaine in 16 live animals; saline injection was used as a control. Both sides of the brachial plexus were located successfully using the NS-guided technique. Sensory blockade (nociception assessment) and motor blockade (grasping and straightening tests) appeared after application of the two classical local anesthetics, but not normal saline. The motor and sensory blockade induced by bupivacaine exhibited a longer duration than that induced by lidocaine ( p  〈  0.05). All rats recovered uneventfully from general anesthesia and BPB. No abnormal results were found in pathological studies or behavioral observations. Thus, a rat model of NS-guided BPB was established, and BPB induced an overall reversible sensory and motor blockade in the thoracic limbs. Evaluation of the efficacy and safety demonstrated that this rat BPB model was feasible, reproducible, and safe.

Abstract: To provide an overview of the current situation, challenges, and trends in online medical services from the perspective of andrology and promote the development of online medical services. Users of the Learning Alliance of Urology, who mainly worked in central regions of China, were invited to complete the questionnaire that included information on the participants and their institutions and their involvement in and concerns for online medical services. We received 875 complete responses. The percentage of online andrology patients at most institutions was less than 30%. The most common services were online appointment registration (92.7%) and online payment (81.8%). Online chat consultation (77.7%) was the most common form of consultation. Only 1 in 5 of the institutions had constructed their Internet hospital. Factors related to the percentage of online andrology patients included specialized andrology clinics and wards, sufficient time for doctors to provide online services, more diversified services, and online clinic training. The biggest challenge for online medical services was diagnosis and treatment safety. It is essential to raise awareness of online medical services for hospitals and patients and strengthen standardized management and training of online medical services, especially applicable to central regions of China. However, online medical services cannot wholly replace offline services due to insufficient diagnosis and treatment.
