    Abstract: To assess the correlations between atherosclerotic plaque characteristics and inflammatory activity by combined use of 18 F-fluorodeoxyglucose ( 18 F-FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Methods Patients underwent 18 F-FDG PET/CT and MRI. Target/background ratios (TBR) of axial sections were determined from mean standard uptake values (SUV). Correlations between TBR and mean vessel wall thickness, total vessel area, lumen area, vessel wall area and normalized wall index were calculated. Plaque types were defined as calcified, collagen, lipid or haemorrhage. Plaques were also classified as thick, thin, or ruptured fibrous cap. Results The study included 31 patients (1178 plaque slices). There was a significant decrease in TBR values across the fibrous cap groups, such that ruptured  〉  thin  〉  thick. Lipid and haemorrhage plaques had significantly higher TBR than calcification and collagen plaques. There were weak positive correlations between TBR and mean vessel wall thickness, vessel wall area and normalized wall index. Conclusions Thin or ruptured plaques, lipid-rich plaques and haemorrhagic plaques possess high inflammatory activity. The combination of 18 F-FDG PET/CT and MRI could be useful for qualitative and quantitative diagnosis of carotid atherosclerotic plaques.

    Abstract: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder characterized by hyperandrogenism and follicular arrest. Electroacupuncture (EA) has been shown to be effective at improving hyperandrogenism and follicular arrest in PCOS; however, its mechanism of action remains to be deciphered. Objective: In this study, we investigated whether EA improved follicular development in an obese rat model of PCOS and regulated the expression of adiponectin, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC). Methods: EA was administered at CV3, CV4 and ST40. Changes in body weight, paraovarian fat, estrus cycle, ovarian morphology, levels of related hormones, and glucose and lipid metabolism were evaluated. In addition, protein and mRNA expression of adiponectin, AMPK and ACC was measured. Results: The body weight and paraovarian fat of rats in the EA group were reduced, while estrus cyclicity and ovarian morphology improved. Levels of free fatty acids, triglycerides, total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol were significantly reduced in the EA group, as well as blood glucose levels. Furthermore, levels of testosterone and luteinizing hormone were reduced in the EA group, while estradiol levels were increased. Protein and mRNA expression of adiponectin, AMPKα1 and liver kinase B1 (LKB1) was found to be increased in the EA group, while protein and mRNA expression of ACC were significantly reduced. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that EA improved follicular development and metabolism and regulated expression levels of adiponectin, AMPKα1, LKB1 and ACC in our obese rat model of PCOS.

    Abstract: This paper proposes a trajectory-based optimal area forwarding (TOAF) algorithm tailored for multihop data delivery from infrastructure nodes (e.g., Internet access points) to moving vehicles (infrastructure-to-vehicle) in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) with partial deployment of stationary nodes. It focuses on reducing the delivery-delay jitter and improving the low reliability of infrastructure-to-vehicle communication. To adapt with the real world, TOAF supposes that stationary nodes are partially installed at intersections in VANETs, and nodes' trajectories can be calculated and predicted, such as using cloud services and GPS, to find the optimal area where the destination vehicle may receive a packet timely. AP selects the optimal area from the trajectory of the destination vehicle and determines the delivery sequence, which includes stationary and mobile nodes from the AP to the optimal area. During delivery, if a new node finds that the delay to the next stationary node is less than that of the current carrier, it can be added to the sequence, reducing the delivery delay. The addition of a new node continues until the packet reaches the optimal area and infrastructure-to-vehicle communication is achieved. The simulation results confirm that TOAF can improve the performance of delivery-delay jitters and reliability of infrastructure-to-vehicle communication with partial deployment of stationary nodes.

    Abstract: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common osteoarthropathy with chronic inflammatory pain as the core symptom in middle-aged and elderly people. LncRNA MEG3 (Maternally expressed gene 3) is involved in the development of OA via regulation of angiogenesis, which causes the activation and overexpression of transient receptor potential vanilloid type-1 (TRPV1). In this study, we investigated the mechanism of MEG3-TRPV1 signaling in chronic inflammatory pain (CIP) of rat model. Chronic inflammatory pain was modeled using subcutaneous microinjection of complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA) into the left hind paw of rats. We showed that TRPV1 mRNA and protein were significantly increased, while MEG3 mRNA was significantly decreased, in the DRG and SDH of CFA-induced rats. In addition, intrathecal injection of MEG3-overexpressing lentivirus significantly downregulated TRPV1 expression and alleviated chronic inflammatory pain in CFA-induced rats. Treatment with a TRPV1 antagonist also significantly relieved chronic inflammatory pain in CFA-induced rats. In general, our results reveal that MEG3 alleviates chronic inflammatory pain by downregulating TRPV1 expression. These findings may provide new therapeutic targets in the treatment of patients with OA.

    Abstract: Recovery of the interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) during post-operative ileus (POI) is important for the restoration of gastrointestinal (GI) motility. Acupuncture can protect ICCs, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we investigated whether miR-222, c-kit and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) are involved in the putative effects of acupuncture on ICC recovery. Methods: A POI model was established in Sprague-Dawley rats by colo-colic anastomosis, and then acupuncture was performed at bilateral ST36, SP6 and LR3 once daily for 3 consecutive days. C-kit protein expression in the colonic tissue adjacent to the incision site was determined by immunohistochemistry and Western blotting. mRNA levels of c-kit, eNOS and miR-222 were measured by real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Results: The levels of c-kit mRNA/protein and eNOS mRNA decreased, while miR-222 increased in the colonic tissues of POI model rats. Acupuncture treatment improved GI motility, inhibited the up-regulation of miR-222 and blocked the down-regulation of c-kit mRNA/protein and eNOS mRNA. The levels of miR-222 and c-kit were negatively correlated. Conclusion: Acupuncture at ST36, SP6 and LR3 facilitates ICC recovery and improves post-operative GI motility in part through regulation of miR-222, c-kit and eNOS.

    Abstract: The semi-spade rudder and KP458 propeller of the KVLCC2 (KRISO very large crude carrier) model tanker are adopted by ITTC maneuvering technical committee in the comparative study of ship maneuverability. The incompressible viscous flow around semi-spade rudder and KP458 propeller is investigated using Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations, the computational grids are generated using ICEM software, and finite volume method is employed to discretize the governing equations. Combined with turbulence model, the hydrodynamic performance of semi-spade rudder is analyzed at different rudder angles, and the result provides a reference for the estimation of the hydrodynamic characteristics of semi-spade rudder. The multi-reference framework method is employed to carry out the numerical simulation of the flow field around the propeller. The thrust and torque of propeller under different turbulence models are calculated in the simulation. The thrust coefficient curve, torque coefficient curve, and efficiency curve are present. The pressure distributions of the pressure side and suction side of propeller blades are studied at different advance coefficient. Based on the study of the hydrodynamic performance of the semi-spade rudder and propeller, the propeller–rudder interaction is simulated and analyzed at different advance coefficient.

    Abstract: Producing qualified forensic pathological practitioners is a common difficulty around the world. In China, forensic pathology is one of the required major subspecialties for undergraduates majoring in forensic medicine, in contrast to forensic education in Western countries where forensic pathology is often optional. The enduring predicament is that the professional qualities and abilities of forensic students from different institutions vary due to the lack of an efficient forensic pedagogical model. The purpose of this article is to describe the new pedagogical model of forensic pathology at Zhongshan School of Medicine, Sun Yat-sen University, which is characterised by: (a) imparting a broad view of forensic pathology and basic knowledge of duties and tasks in future careers to students; (b) educating students in primary skills on legal and medical issues, as well as advanced forensic pathological techniques; (c) providing students with resources to broaden their professional minds, and opportunities to improve their professional qualities and abilities; and (d) mentoring students on occupational preparation and further forensic education. In the past few years, this model has resulted in numerous notable forensic students accomplishing achievements in forensic practice and forensic scientific research. We therefore expect this pedagogical model to establish the foundation for forensic pathological education and other subspecialties of forensic medicine in China and abroad.

    Abstract: The responses of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) or corticosteroids as the initial treatment on pregnancy with ITP were unsatisfactory. This study aimed to assess the safety and effectiveness of prednisone plus IVIg versus prednisone or IVIg in pregnant patients with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). Methods: Between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2020, 970 pregnancies diagnosed with ITP at 19 collaborative centers in China were reviewed in this observational study. A total of 513 pregnancies (52.89%) received no intervention. Concerning the remaining pregnancies, 151 (33.04%) pregnancies received an initial treatment of prednisone plus IVIg, 105 (22.98%) pregnancies received IVIg alone, and 172 (37.64%) pregnancies only received prednisone. Results: Regarding the maternal response to the initial treatment, no differences were found among the three treatment groups (41.1% for prednisone plus IVIg, 33.1% for prednisone, and 38.1% for IVIg). However, a significant difference was observed in the time to response between the prednisone plus IVIg group (4.39 ± 2.54 days) and prednisone group (7.29 ± 5.01 days; p   〈  0.001), and between the IVIg group (6.71 ± 4.85 days) and prednisone group ( p  〈  0.001). The median prednisone duration in the monotherapy group was 27 days (range, 8–195 days), whereas that in the combination group was 14 days (range, 6–85 days). No significant differences were found among these three treatment groups in neonatal outcomes, particularly concerning the neonatal platelet counts. The time to response in the combination treatment group was shorter than prednisone monotherapy. The duration of prednisone application in combination group was shorter than prednisone monotherapy. The combined therapy showed a lower predelivery platelet transfusion rate than IVIg alone. Conclusion: These findings suggest that prednisone plus IVIg may represent a potential combination therapy for pregnant patients with ITP.

    Abstract: To investigate adipocytokine expression levels, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and transforming growth factor (TGF)-β1/Smad signaling activity in diabetic patients with pulmonary infection. Methods Eighty-two type 2 diabetic patients with pulmonary infection were included in the observation group and 75 patients with simple type 2 diabetes were recruited into the control group. The fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and PLR in the two groups were compared. Complement-C1q/tumor necrosis factor related protein 3 (CTRP-3), complement-C1q/tumor necrosis factor related protein 9 (CTRP-9), leptin, adiponectin, and TGF-β1/Smad signaling pathway activity in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was detected. Results Compared with patients in the control group, patients in the observation group presented with increased levels of FGB, HbA1c, and leptin, an increase in the PLR, and decreased serum CTRP-3, CTRP-9, and adiponectin levels. TGF-β1, p-Smad2, and p-Smad3 protein expression levels were up-regulated in PBMCs from patients in the observation group compared with the control group. Conclusions These results show that in type 2 diabetic patients with pulmonary infection, adipocytokine expression is altered, PLR is disturbed, and the TGF-β1/Smad signaling pathways in PBMCs are significantly activated.

    Abstract: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) plays a functional role in vascular endothelium homeostasis and the alleviation of atherosclerosis. Matrix gla protein (MGP) and Nε-(1-carboxymethyl)-l-lysine (CML) are both confirmed to be VC predictors. This study investigated the association between BDNF, MGP, CML and coronary artery calcification (CAC). Plasma BDNF, MGP, and CML levels were measured in 274 patients who underwent computed tomography to determine the CAC score (Agatston score). It was found that patients with CAC exhibited lower BDNF and MGP and higher CML levels than those without CAC. Plasma BDNF levels in patients with diabetes or hypertension were lower compared with the control groups. In logistic regression analysis, age, hypertension, BDNF, and MGP were independent predictors of CAC. Plasma BDNF and MGP levels were both correlated with the Agatston score even after adjustment for age, total cholesterol level, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein level, creatinine clearance rate, and the presence of hypertension and diabetes mellitus. In 167 patients with CAC, circulating BDNF level was inversely associated with CML level and positively related to MGP level. In the receiver operating characteristic analysis for CAC, the areas under the curves for BDNF, MGP, and CML were 0.757, 0.777 and 0.653, respectively. In summary, plasma BDNF levels are associated with the Agatston score, and BDNF further predicts the occurrence of CAC.
