Abstract: Previous research indicated that service learning (SL) is an effective pedagogy to improve students’ problem-solving ability and increase their classroom engagement. However, studies on SL are rare in China. This study examined the effects of SL on the problem solving of Chinese undergraduate students as well as the mechanism through which it worked. Eighty-two students were divided into two groups: the SL group participated in a SL activity during whole semester and the contrast group (no-SL group) underwent other comparable learning tasks. The study revealed the differentiated effects of SL on students solving different types of problems and investigated the mediating role of classroom behavior engagement in problem solving. The research findings suggested that teachers should provide students with authentic and ill-structured problems to increase their classroom engagement as well as far transfer.

Abstract: Marine shale reservoirs have experienced intense tectonic movements in southeastern Chongqing, resulting in widely developed folds, faults and bedding slip deformation. The gas content is of a wide range while the organic matter content and thickness are sufficient for shale gas accumulation. Here, we review previous work and present outcrop and core data from 11 shale wells around southeastern Chongqing to analyze and summarize tectonic types and their combinations, as well as their influence on shale gas preservation and enrichment. Fault and bedding slips are prevalent in shale reservoirs, and they apparently influence shale gas content. Bedding slip crush is usually formed at the bottom interval where the total organic content is high from intense horizontal compression. Bedding slip crushing and well-developed high-angle natural fractures form a net fracture system where shale gas is enriched in an anticline structure or lost to air in a syncline structure laterally. Strata dip is the key geological factor that controls bedding slip deformation in shale reservoirs in certain areas. According to the established bedding slip geological model, when bedding slip occurred, the critical strata dips of the lower Silurian Longmaxi Formation were 13.34°, respectively. Bedding slip crushed anticlines without faults and synclines without faults and bedding slip crushing are the two tectonic patterns that are favorable for shale gas preservation and enrichment, which should be the focus of further explorations of lower Paleozoic shale gas in southeastern Chongqing.

Abstract: The passive electromagnetic damper was commonly simplified into the linear viscous model in numerical analysis, while this simplification may produce large error when the damper inductance is obvious. In this article, an optimal passive electromagnetic damper with good performance and economy characteristic is proposed by parameter optimization, where the damping density is set as the optimization objective. The hysteresis behavior of the passive electromagnetic damper is verified, and by neglecting the inductance effect, the passive electromagnetic damper can be simplified into the linear viscous model in some cases, but actually the inductance effect is obvious under the high-frequency excitation. Subsequently, the effect of inductance on seismic performance of building damper system under the near-fault earthquake is investigated by comparing the simplified linear viscous model and the accurate passive electromagnetic model. The passive electromagnetic damper was supplemented in a 9-story building, and the analysis of the accurate passive electromagnetic model was carried out by the co-simulation of MATLAB and OpenSees based on the client–server technology. It concludes that the inductance effect is obvious and causes large error when the building damper system is subjected to the near-fault earthquake, and the energy dissipation performance described by the linear viscous model is overestimated.

Abstract: In this paper, a new kind of wet-laid nonwoven material composed of highly fibrillated PPTA (para-phenylene terephthalamide) pulp is used in the preparation of a lithium-ion battery separator. Because the PPTA pulp is composed of fibrils and micro-fibrils, which are mostly less than 1 µm in diameter, the pore size of the separator could be well controlled to less than 1 µm. The effects of PPTA pulp on the pore structure of the separator, thermo-stability, electrochemical property and mechanical properties are researched. The results show that with the increase of PPTA pulp dosage, the pore size of separator is decreased. In addition, this type of separator shows excellent thermal stability. The strength retention of the nonwoven separator is 45% after it is stored at 180°C for 10 minutes, but the polyolefin membrane is completely molten under the same conditions.

Abstract: Relatively small radial artery may be challenging for cannulation. We investigated whether a distal tourniquet would inflate the proximal radial artery and therefore facilitate cannulation in adults. Methods There were two stages of the study. The first was to measure the characteristics of radial artery by ultrasound imaging before and after tourniquet in volunteers. The second was a prospective, randomized, double blind study. Forty patients (American Society of Anesthesiologists I-III) who needed artery cannulation during operation were enrolled. Patients were assigned into two groups: loosen or tightened tourniquet for proximal radial artery cannulation by traditional palpation technique. The primary endpoints were the success rates and time of first attempt success by traditional palpation technique. The time of success after two to three attempts, failure rates and complications were collected. Results For volunteers, the distal tourniquet significantly expanded the cross-sectional up-forward diameter (p 〈 0.001) and the area (p 〈 0.05), but had no effect on cross-sectional lateral-lateral diameter or circumference of proximal radial artery (p 〉 0.05). The success rate of first attempt was higher in the tighten group (75%) than in the loosen group (15%, p 〈 0.05), but the time for success of first attempt/two to three attempts was similar (19.33 ± 1.12/62.11 ± 37.03 sec loosen group vs. 19.07 ± 12.75/45.55 ± 8.98 sec tightened group, p 〉 0.05). Both groups had same failure rates of 10%. No complication was observed. Conclusions Distal tourniquet could inflate the proximal radial artery and facilitate palpation of radial artery cannulation.

Abstract: Sepsis and septic shock are common in noninvasive ventilation (NIV) patients. However, studies on the association between sepsis and NIV failure are lacking. Methods: A prospective multi-center observational study was performed in 16 Chinese intensive care units (ICUs). Patients who used NIV due to hypoxemic respiratory failure were enrolled. Sepsis and septic shock were diagnosed according to the guideline of sepsis-3. Results: A total of 519 patients were enrolled. Sepsis developed in 365 patients (70%) and septic shock developed in 79 patients (15%). However, 75 patients (14%) had no sepsis. NIV failure was 23%, 38%, and 61% in patients, with no sepsis, sepsis, and septic shock, respectively. Multivariate analysis found that sepsis [odds ratio (OR) = 1.95, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.06–3.61] and septic shock (OR = 2.47, 95% CI: 1.12–5.45) were independently associated with NIV failure. In sepsis and septic shock population, the NIV failure was 13%, 31%, 37%, 53%, and 67% in patients with sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) scores of ⩽2, 3–4, 5–6, 7–8, and ⩾9, respectively. Patients with nonpulmonary induced sepsis had similar NIV failure rate compared with those with pulmonary induced sepsis, but had higher proportion of septic shock (37% versus 10%, p ⩽ 0.01) and lower ICU mortality (10% versus 22%, p ⩽ 0.01). Conclusions: Sepsis was associated with NIV failure in patients with hypoxemic respiratory failure, and the association was stronger in septic shock patients. NIV failure increased with the increase of organ dysfunction caused by sepsis. The reviews of this paper are available via the supplemental material section.

Abstract: Surface modification of polypropylene is performed in this work by enzyme-catalyzed post-processing strategy. The polyDOPA was synthesized by in-situ polymerization in the present of laccase and deposited on the polypropylene surface. The effect of various process variables namely processing step, pH, time, and temperature is studied at various levels. The results show that one-bath and one-step method is the optimal mode. Various functional groups incorporated to the polymer surface are confirmed by attenuated total reflectance-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The effect of process variables on surface morphology of polymers is evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, revealing that the surface of the polypropylene is covered with thin burrs, and these are regarded as polyDOPA adhered after treatment. Furthermore, the electrostatic charge decay time and contact angle as well as capillary wetting measurements of the modified polypropylene are 0.61 s and 75.33°, respectively, indicating its fine anti-static electricity and better wettability. Besides, this material shows dark gray colors and exhibits excellent ultraviolet-resistance performance. Interestingly, the modification process nearly has no influences on the mechanical property.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to pilot test the effects of a culturally adapted early intervention influenced by the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) on reduction of autism symptoms and severity categorization for young children with autism spectrum disorders in China. Participants were randomly assigned to either the control or intervention groups. The children’s age ranged from 24 to 60 months in this study. Children in the control group ( n = 20) received eclectic intervention services for a minimum of 2 hr per day, 10 hr per week, while children in the intervention group ( n = 16) received the culturally adapted intervention 1 hr per day, 5 hr per week, plus 5 hr per week of the same services as the control group for a total of 8 weeks. After 8 weeks, children in the intervention group demonstrated a significant decrease in autism symptoms and improved severity categorization, compared with children in the control group. Future studies and implications of the culturally adapted early intervention in China are discussed.
